    Portugal

    January 16, 2020 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Have been on hop on hop off tour today. What an amazing place.! The people are very friendly and helpful. Chose to walk back to my hotel following the church visit. What a big mistake. The heaven's opened and I got v wet. Have booked to go to a Fado show and port tasting tonight. My plan is to do a river cruise (with port tastings) tomorrow with lots more exploring. Suppose I better get used to the rain if I am going to be walking the 123kms. Did I tell you that Jeni has had yo pull out so she can care for her Mum. So I am solo.poRead more

    January 16, 2020 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

At dinner following Fado concert. Portugese guitar and singing. While I could not understand the words. I enjoyed the drama v much. Think the stories were all a bit sad. The concert came with a glass of port. First tasting and it was v niceRead more

  • Last day Porto

    January 17, 2020 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Have had a wonderful day exploring the city. Have been to see a church. A book store (inspired J K Rowling to write Harry Potter). Been on a river cruise and tasted lotsa Port. A funny moment when I walked into a bag shop and explained how my zip was broken and needed to buy a new bag. Only to be told that the gentleman I was talking to was a customer and did not work in the shop!😃 Booked my bus ticket for tomorrow. Am heading to Soain and start my walk day after tomorrow. Wish me luck.Read more

  • Day one. Tui to Porrino

    January 19, 2020 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Have managed to find my way out of Tui and now sitting in cafe sipping cinnamon tea. Never mind that I ordered black tea 😉. Have had to pinch myself that I am really doing this. But also shed a wee tear as my travel buddy couldn't make it. The cow charged at me mooing v loudly. Thought it was all over rover. Luckily it was tied up.Read more

  • Porrino

    January 19, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Arrived safe and sound. Apparently I walked 7kms extra by walking this road.
Not such a hard walk today. A bit of up tomorrow.
Earned my lunch all the same! Porrino quiet today as it is Sunday. Sat in the cafe and was joined by lots of people following the church service. Was interesting listening to the banter even though I couldn't understand a word. Lots of beer and wine drinking...not by me though😇Read more

  • Day two to Porrino

    January 20, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

A frosty start to the day today. Headed off on the wrong path. Luckily a couple of other walkers let me know. Who knows where I would have ended up 😀. Walked a good 17kms with a lovely young American girl. It was great to have her company and helped during the hills (the down was particularly challenging on my knees). She had spent a semester of University at Otago. The second part of my walk without her wasn't much fun. I thought I had missed a turn off (lost confidence after the effort in the morning haha ) as there was a 3km stretch on the road. A little bit scary with trucks and buses hurtling past at 80km. Had to follow directions to my hotel and somehow managed to find it. Got to my room and fell asleep for over an hour!Read more

  • Pontevedra

    January 21, 2020 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Day three and feeling ok. Stupid knee gives me gyp on the downhill. Beautiful countryside today. Walked solo for most part. Caught up with American girl for the last half hour. Have had a chance to explore Pontevedra. A bigger city with an old part to it. Lots of alley ways to explore. Have just eaten tapas for tea and have been given a shot of local liquor that the owner says I need to tryRead more

  • Shot tasting

    January 21, 2020 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

A coffee based liquor. Probably more to your taste Nick. I feel I have to drink it as don't wanna be rude😇

  • Day 5

    January 23, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Leaving Casa de Reis and heading to Padron. Apparently this is renowned for its oysters. Shame I don't like them. Yesterday was a bit of hard work for me. But have lots of anti inflammatories on board and had a couple of baths so hopefully all good today. I didn't take many photos. This town is a spa town and the region is famous for vineyards and wineries. But as it is winter everything is shut...shame. Came down to breakfast and man oh man! What a choice. Ate in the dining room on my own for tea last night (but had Glenn's company on Skype) and breakfast not another soul in sight. Followed a young German couple for most of the way yesterday. Two little dogs hanging out the window barking like mad. Couldn't see them for ages. Reminded me of wee Parker. I couldn't understand a word they were barking as I do not understand Spanish!Read more

  • Last Day to Santiago de Compostella

    January 24, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

Had an enjoyable day yesterday. Lots of forest to walk through. Met a young Brazilian but no one else. When I finally got to my hotel the receptionist told me that I walk too fast...she had passed me in her car on the way to start her shift and was surprised I turned up so quickly..the other funny incident; I finally arrived in Padron, my destination and I was clapped (like in marathons) buen camino he says and he pointed me to the church. I said no not going there and showed him my voucher for the hotel. He pointed down the road and said 2 kms. I gave a little groan and he grabbed my head and kissed my forehead and pushed me on my way. All in good jest. I got given the local liquor to try last night....bit like lenocello. Could not be rude and decline! It was a day of forests and cemeteries.Read more

  • Santiago

    January 25, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

Arrived yesterday having walked the last 6 or so kms with young men from Germany and Poland who both spoke English. It helped to get through the last slog. An awkward moment when the German asked the Polish guy why he was doing the walk...he said he woke up one morning and God asked him to go to Santiago. The German then spoke for 15 mins on the atrocities of Catholic Church. I think I did the ditzy old lady thing and talked about the weather or scenery! Followed my instructions and found the hotel after getting my last stamp...to confirm I had made it! Cancelled my Tapas tour and had a very long bath. Have just had an amazing breakfast and about to explore this beautiful town. Might even go to midday Mass that they hold for the pilgrims....just for you Carol! I want to see them swinging the incense thingies.Read more

  • Lisbon

    January 30, 2020 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

My last day in Lisbon. Another beautiful city. Such a lot to see and impossible in my short 4 day stay. Went on a day trip yesterday to Sintra. Couple of lovely Palaces and a castle to see. Then drove back down the coast. Lots of history and beautiful scenery. A tram trip today and maybe a spot of shopping. Though not alot of room in my suitcase! The steps are where I have to walk up and down to get into town area. Probably a good idea as I have been enjoying the local wines and pastries! There is also a funicular. Photo attached.Read more

  • Final leg

    January 31, 2020 in England ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Made it to London Heathrow. Transferred terminals with ease. Am a little worried about my bag. It was checked in at Lisbon and lots of people here keep asking to look at my bag sticker thingy...as if they dont think the system is right. V sad to be leaving Lisbon. But also looking forward to coming homeRead more

  • Guangzhou

    February 1, 2020 in China ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

5 hours to wait before getting on the plane. Showered and eaten Burger King. Meals on the plane were horrible. Not able to watch a movie as they are not giving out headsets and I didn't have my own. Sleeping tablet (half) helped me get thru the flight. Will do the same for the next leg. Not flying China Southern Airlines again....if I can help it. Give me Singapore Or Emirates any day! Rant over.Read more
