The Boys in Patagonia

I am beyond excited about this adventure. In my 55 years, I have done very few all boys trips. But it is time to create some great memories with my boys! Les mer
  • Back to Buenos Aires

    16. januar 2023, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Initially we were meant to stay in Iguaza but fly bondi sucks and changed our flights multiple times, which would eventually ruin our other travel plans. So we bought new flights and got a new hotel back in Buenos Aires. Expensive but we’re close to the airport and get a little more rest. We also flew back first class for $24 to upgrade! LolLes mer

  • Airports, Taxis & Sleepless

    16. januar 2023, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 95 °F

    (story time)
Wow, in the past 18 hours there has been challenges galore. Everyone who knows me knows I love a great adventure, and even the challenges that come with it. This morning I was almost pushed to the limit.
After a great day at Iguazu falls yesterday, things started to get rough. Keep in mind we are in very remote areas of the world and hardly speak enough Spanish passed, “Gracias.”
Yesterday’s flight from Iguazu >BA delayed again and we wouldn’t have made the connecting flight from BA>ElCalafate. Instead of a nice meal and hotel night in Iguazu we went straight to the airport to explore the options. We found a late night flight to BA that would get us in around midnight, just 5 hours before needing to head to the International airport on the other side of BA. So we planned ahead to get as much sleep as we could by getting a Holiday Inn as close to that airport as possible.
Every minute of sleep counts at this point.
As the taxi is taking us across town on the freeway at nearly midnight, Austin looks up and notices our hotel as we pass it by. The taxi driver had no idea where he was going.. The reroute to get back to the hotel would have us driving up the freeway and coming back through some type of traffic jam and adding 30 minutes to our drive. After settling in, we got three hours of sleep before the alarms went off to make our next flight. Feeling the burn in our eyes and that horrible sluggish feeling of running on too little sleep , we hustle downstairs to get the next taxi.
    Whew…… all good, right?
After a long line at security we get up to show them our boarding passes only to be told that we are at the wrong airport. 😳
Everything on our itinerary from my booking showed the flight leaving from the international airport, except for the official airline boarding pass.
    OH CRAP!!!
We immediately went into Amazing Race mode… showing taxi drivers out front the panic in our faces as we pleaded to get us across town in less than 30 minutes through Monday morning traffic. We had a superstar taxi driver, who did all he could and amazingly had us to the airport with 15 minutes before departure. There is still an ounce of hope but it would require a physical fitness test and some pleading to get through security.
The three of us nearly sprinting through a long terminal, carrying backpacks and 50 pound luggage and sweating like we’re running a marathon .
We ran right to the front of security and they waived us right through…. We’re going to make it…. ……NOT!!! We got to the gate with five minutes to spare and there was not a soul to be found. No plane, no people, just dead silence. Ugh…
Me feeling deflated is an understatement as everything on our schedule is dependent on us getting to ElCalafate today.
Austin took the the reins, and started doing his fast fingered iPhone search for flight options. He found a flight that would get us there just 12 hours behind schedule (to be followed by a 4 hour drive into Southern Patagonia with very few signs of life outside of cows).
So, we pay for the crazy expensive tickets and quickly decide we just need some sleep. Where can you find sleep at 6:30 in the morning near an airport in a different country?
After trying to find some type of hotel, that would be flexible with us (No Go) we found a hostel and grabbed another taxi ride to take advantage of the four hours before our next flight. Of course it wasn’t that easy….
Just like my experience 35 years earlier in downtown, Milan, we found ourselves wandering the streets, trying to find the hostel with luggage in hand 😅.Finally success… dorm style room with complete strangers BUT who cares, we just needed sleep.
Here we are on board the new flight and ready to depart to fly up north to Cordoba to get our connecting flight and turn around and come back down south to explore southern Patagonia.
    Another day creating memories ✅
Grateful to share this craziness with my boys❤️
I have a feeling there is more to come in the days ahead.

  • A hotel in 28 November

    17. januar 2023, Chile ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Last minute hotel in the middle of the night when you can’t cross the border to 🇨🇱
Name of the town “28 November “
    Nothing but Luxury 😬
A view from our room like NO other!
But great service. Walked out of our room in the morning and they had juice, toast and ready to order breakfast waiting for us.Les mer

  • Another 2am bedtime

    17. januar 2023, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

We can’t seem to get to a hotel at a reasonable hour. Today crisis management mode was activated and we solved one problem after another.
Photo of connor and I eating breakfast at the hostel. His first hostel experience.
Sunset after arriving in El Calafate.
And a photo and video of us trying to get into Chile at 1am but being denied. So we had to find a new hotel in Argentina until the border opens at 8am and then we can get into our actual hotel in Chile.

  • Meaning of this Trip

    18. januar 2023, Chile ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Aside from great conversations, making fun of Jared’s terrible tech skills, and Austin loving goretex. I’ve tried to really focus on being grateful to have the means and physical health to see a place majority never will. Some of the moments are once in a lifetime moments. The first photo was taken from rushing out of our hotel at 5am to make it to another place on time. Rushing from one place to another has been a lot of what we do. I had my back to this view and had I not taken 30 seconds to turn around I would of missed one of the greatest moments of the trip. I quickly snapped the picture and walked along realizing I only saw it through a camera. I stopped and turned around to take a glance on my own that I can keep for myself.Les mer

  • The shortest distance between two points

    19. januar 2023, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Due to all of the flight issues earlier in the week we ended up hiking Base of the Towers on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. That means right after the hike we had to get in the car drive five hours to pick up Dylan. from El Calafate, have dinner and get back in the car for another 2 hour drive to El Chalten in order to hike Mt Fitz Roy.
Very tired but excited for next hike.
Arrived at our hotel at midnight ready to get 5 hours of sleep and hit the trailhead.
I was feeling the fatigue early on this hike but it wasn’t nearly as aggressive as the previous hike so that helped. as we got to mile 7 out of 8 to the summit it was making no sense. We could see the summit of the mountain, but there was a large section of a mountain, right in front of it, it had to be much farther way than 1 mile left. Almost all hikes that I’ve done typically have switchbacks to work your way up and around mountains to get to the top.. On this hike , however, we approach the sign that said 1 km to the summit, and as we started into it, we very quickly realized it was straight up and over. It was brutal.! As I was pushing through each step forward and wishing for switchbacks I thought about the saying “ the shortest distance between two points is a straight line“. Well that’s exactly what this one was. Straight up and over to the top.

Another epic hike in an amazing part of the world !!

  • Beautiful Ice

    20. januar 2023, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

As good as technology is allowing us great photos, our pictures really don’t fully show how beautiful and amazing Perito Moreno Glacier is.
We had a great day just standing at a lookout point for over an hour as we watched chunks of ice fall and hit the water.
The top of the glacier standing at over 200 ft high from the water (only 20% of the entire glacier) is spectacular. It is also the only glacier in the world that is still growing each year.
The thundering sounds and the waves of water from what looked like small chunks of ice falling puts in perspective how grand this glacier is.
After our lookout stay we went to get instructions and suited up in a full cold water dry suits to start the kayaking adventure.
Absolutely beautiful and even peaceful as we paddled in between small ice chunks and mini glaciers. There were times when you would hear cracking and rumbling and all of the sudden massive ice is coming up from beneath the water and rolling into a floating cluster.
What a day followed by wandering the streets of Calafate (great town) enjoying food and shopping finished with gelato 😋

  • Island Martillo = Penguins

    21. januar 2023, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

    What an experience!!
This was even more cool than expected.
A tour bus took us to Estancia Harberton which is a beautiful 20k acre private ranch about 1.5 hours out of Ushuaia. We then got in a small Zodiac boat to head over to Island Martillo. As soon as we stepped on the rock beach there are thousands of penguins doing there thing. To top it off there was a King penguin standing tall right in the center of the colony probably 30 yards from us. Seeing a King P. Is rare and not guaranteed.
We walked the island on pathways and there were penguins only 6 inches from our feet.
We saw a penguin standing tall on his nest over the egg. Seeing the penguins play and even fight or just chill and enjoy their territory was a thrill!
Back at the Ranch we took a quick tour of this 200 year old ranch that is still owned and operated by the 6th generation of the family that started it.
It was so beautiful and peaceful. A place you would want to relax and enjoy its surroundings.
Super grateful to experience this with my boys.
    I just love these guys!
