Visiting the Community of Ummannaq
August 23, 2025 in Greenland ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C
Today we are visiting the community of Ummannaq. We had the usual tannoy wake up call ,breakfast and transfer on the Zodiacs which is always fun .
In visiting the community we were able to experience a lady singing traditional songs and playing a drum. We were able to see in the museum and church ,giving an insight into the life in this area.
I met a young family in the supermarket and asked them if life was hard here ...they didn't think so .
A gentleman in the museum had lived abroad for several years, has returned saying he preferred the freedom of the way of life in his community.
The lady who sang the songs was pregnant and said she'd have to go to Nuuk ,the capital of Greenland, about a month before the baby is born...
There is a hospital in the community but not possible to have surgery there it seems, sounded more like a health centre to me.
Schooling is from age 6 to 15yrs. As we passed the school a lot of the children were waving out of the window at us
In the afternoon it had been the intention to flight see in the on board helicopters ...but the weather was too foggy and the winds not favourable, so that was cancelled.
I spent the time in the Panorama lounge, catching up on my penguins app and inevitably being so comfortable, I fell asleep. I think its the fresh air that is to blame for having so many power naps 😴 😅...because certainly not exherting myself in any way!...other than wrestling with the requirements of going out in the Zodiacs ..warm parka , waterproof overtrousers muck boots ,and a life jacket!🤪...every time we go out ...
In the early evening we had a Recap of the day and information about tomorrow's plans
Dinner followed and I am now part of a nice group that has evolved over the past few days ...the 2 ladies from my room ,2 opposite and 2 sisters from a room further along our corridor. We all sit together on a round table in the dining room and have a fun time..We have introduced a small competition for the photo of the day ,which we get someone from another table to judge.....all good fun..
After dinner some of my group went to the Panorama lounge and were joined by a few more people...a couple from Surrey and a man and his Grandson .who are travelling together
The chatting went on really late and I eventually returned to my room about 1am.Read more
