    Auckland, New Zealand

    June 27, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

This was definitely one of the hardest days of my life - saying good-bye to my AMAZING family, beautiful country, wonderful friends, and awesome life as I knew it. I know I'm extremely lucky if this is one of my life's hardest things though.....and all because it meant I was about to get to travel the world! I also knew it was something that I had to go through, and that so many of us do. Especially us Kiwis. It's definitely not something that I'd want to repeat though! I cried so much at the airport, but definitely felt that urge to need to prove myself and see if I could make it on my own, on the other side of the world. Many of us feel a great sense of needing to 'spread our wings', and experience being a part of something much bigger than ourselves and our own small worlds. I had an okay flight to LA. Stopping off in Tahiti was a bit tedious though! I was also incredibly exhausted from such a busy and emotional week, and became annoyed at not being able to fall asleep because normally I can. Didn't help being sat next to a gross guy though. Loved that I was wearing lots of jewellery etc from special people at home, and it's one of the things that comforted me! St Patrick's gold necklace from Mum and Dad, St Patrick's silver necklace from The Palmers, Diamond ring from Emma and Scarlett, daisy ring from Sarah, and TDS engraved bracelet from The Dance Studio. I felt such an incredible force of love for my family at the airport, and was especially touched from seeing Mike's emotions as he of course normally keeps these quite hidden. It was Matt's second day at a brand new job which he'd been working so hard to get so I completely understood him not being there. Had a really special good-bye with him that morning too though. There was definitely light at the end of the plane right though, as arriving in LA meant that I got to see my dear friend Emma-Kate who I hadn't seen in ages!Read more

    Lost Angles, USA

    June 28, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

LA was so much fun! It was definitely the holiday part of my trip. Was amazing to spend lots of quality time with Emma-Kate again (we can talk and talk for hours on end!) Was also really awesome to see her American life in action (although she did put a lot of it on hold to be able to spend more time with me). She is literally the most driven person I know! The absolute only downfall was her apartment.....I was really lucky to be able to stay in it for free....BUT it had cats! Ahhh! I really don't like cats, and am so so allergic to them, so that wasn't great. I quickly started feeling much better about being away from home while in LA. From memory I got upset on the odd occasion, but most of the time it was all just so much fun and so exciting! I love day to day things, so even just exploring the American supermarkets made me feel relaxed and adventurous! I'm so pleased to have visited Venice Beach and Santa Monica.....they definitely don't come anywhere near comparing to NZ beaches though! The Beverly/Hollywood Hills tour that I did was super touristy but so great. Really enjoyed it. My driver was an Aussie and I think he made it especially worth it. Also had a great time visiting The Grove with Emma (until she had to pop off for an audition), especially going to The Cheesecake Factory! I love that I was texting Ginny and Emma M back home and they instructed me to go to the Cheesecake Factory, but I was already there! :P Emma-Kate having a car made everything especially easy, and I couldn't get over the LA sunshine and blue skies! They were so gorgeous and definitely something I would love to live in! Don't think I'd like living in LA for lots of other reasons though. One being that it just didn't feel very homely. Was absolutely fantastic to visit though, and I'd especially recommend it as a great way of stopping over and making the massive trip to Europe much better!Read more

    Disneyland, Anaheim, LA

    June 29, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This definitely needs a post all of it's own! I know everyone says Disneyland is the "happiest place on earth", but my day at Disneyland really was hands down one of the best days of my life that I can recall so far <3 Emma and I were both SUPER excited to go, and I'm pleased that I've had to wait until my adult years to go as I think things like this you really do appreciate even more when you've had to wait and work hard for them. Discovering Disneyland for the first time with Emma-Kate was awesome as we were both keen to take things in as much as possible, and shared each other's excitement in the finer details of everything and the pure magic of the place. We were both very impressed at what a well oiled machine all of Disneyland is. Normally I can pick fault/think of better ways of running lots of things better, but Disneyland really had thought of everything to make everyone's days run as smoothly and magically as possible; right from the car parking system, to the way the cues worked, to the crowd control at the main street parade. Speaking of the Main Street Parade, I absolutely loved it! Was a definite highlight. And we almost missed it! Oh how I'd love to be able to perform in it. I enjoyed the "It's a Small World" ride much more than what I thought I would considering how old fashioned it is now. I had to do it though because I knew it was one of my Grandma's favourites. It really was still magic and very clever though! One of Mum's favourites I knew was the Peter Pan ride, so that was cool doing that for her too and it was actually really fun! Lots of the rides were quite basic, but they were made in such magical way that just made you feel so HAPPY! The Pirates of the Caribbean ride was INCREDIBLE. That ended up being Emma's favourite I think. We had to line up for it for ages but it was definitely worth it. Really did make you feel like you were in the movie/living in that creepy time. I really really loved Tarzan's treehouse too. Always have a soft spot for that movie/story, and again it just made me believe that I was Jane! Wish my brother Mike had been there to experience it with me though as he and I use to watch Tarzan together. There's so much that I could keep writing about! I really hope I remember this day forever. What Walt Disney believed in and achieved truly was amazing, and I'm so pleased that he did it! When I got to London I watched a documentary on Walt Disney to add to my knowledge on him, and having now experienced Disneyland myself it was awesome to hear and see all about how he managed to bring that magical world to life! I've tried to recall everything we did in roughly the order we did it.......
    - Sleeping Beauty Castle
    - Peter Pan ride
    - Dumbo ride
    - Mikey Mouse toon town
    - It's A Small World ride
    - Watched a little bit of the Beauty and the Beast play
    - Meet the Princesses (Snow White, Ariel and Sleeping Beauty)
    - Had lunch at Mary Poppins' Jolly Holiday cafe
    - Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter's Tea Party spinning teacups ride
    - Finding Nemo ride
    - Main Street Parade
    - Magic Mountain ride (might have that name wrong???)
    - Indiana Jones Jungle Cruise
    - Tarzan's Treehouse
    - Pirates of the Caribbean ride
    - Winnie the Pooh ride
    - Documentary about Abraham Lincoln
    - Dinner at the New Orleans restaurant with live band
    - Main Streep Lights show

    London, United Kingdom

    July 3, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

I arrived in London on the 3rd of July. Had a much better flight from LA to the UK on Virgin Atlantic. I was so tired at first and felt very 'odd', think I was trying to fight off getting upset about leaving home to be honest so it took a few days to get excited about being in the incredible London.

My first night in England I ended up walked in to Camden Town in search of food. Ended up at The Blues Kitchen, which if I was to go back to now I think I'd feel way more comfortable at. Just felt so out of place so to speak my first night. And was SHOCKED at how much my dinner cost! Oh how many more shocks about London prices I was in for. Luckily luckily luckily Gabby came and found me on my first full day, and she literally made everything seem okay :-) From here on we started exploring lots of things together and individually, and I quickly found my feet and started to settle in to London life.

I really loved staying at Goodenough College; was the PERECT place for my first two weeks in this crazy city. Can't believe I found a flat on only my second night here! So crazy! But I was so lucky to do so :-) Knew straight away that both the flat and the people in it were a catch!

Some of the things/areas I explored in my first couple of weeks included Oxford and Regent Streets, Soho, Borough Market, areas around the Thames, Kenweood Ladies Pond, Westfield Stratford, Columbia Road Flower Market, The Hard Rock Cafe, Victoria and Albert Museum, Harrods, Camden Market, saw Dorrance Dance at Saddlers Wells, The Charles Dickens Museum, Hyde Park and also started Networking and going to classes at Pineapple (some of which I had better experiences of than others!)

  • Day 22

    Cornwall, England

    July 18, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

My first trip from London! Caught a National Express coach from Victoria Coach Station to Wadebridge. Had an absolute nightmare getting to the bus on time, and arrive with literally seconds to spare (major issues with all the last minute stuff, and then I couldn't get uber to work at all as hadn't done it on my new phone before, and then there were dramas with getting a black cab). Had a great trip once on board the bus though! Took about 7 hours from memory.

Bill and Stephanie were ready and waiting for me in Wadebridge, Cornwall and it was lovely to meet them. They are very special people who I have a very special connection to, as my Mum actually also stayed with them for a bit while on her travels with her friend Michele in the 1980s! Bill and Steph are literally two of the most generous and kind-hearted, hard-working, genuine people you will ever meet. They went out of their way to make me feel welcome, and were so generous in so many different ways to me. One example is how on my first night just after arriving I realised that I'd stupidly left my laptop onboard the coach!!!!! After numerous phone calls and me trying to figure out what on earth I was meant to do to get my precious (it is!!!) laptop back, Bill decided to drive me all the way down to Penzance to retrieve it! This too roughly 3 hours of driving all up, and he wouldn't even take petrol money from me! Stephanie had prepared a lovely dinner which my antics of course ruined and meant everyone had to wait ages to eat. I will never leave my laptop ever again, and will never forget them offering to do that for me! Oh and the bus driver also jokingly told me off and gave me a slap on the hand when I retrieved it. Reminded me very much of my Grandpa. All of Cornwall was very much like this, old fashioned, and with that Grandpa-like sense of humour.

Bill and Steph had planned a full itinerary for my 6 days in Cornwall. We visited the old fishing village Padstow (now very touristy, which I liked, but the locals definitely did not), which was very picturesque and lovely to wander around. Here and at many other parts of Cornwall I loved how you could feel the history of the place all around you, and that everywhere truly was a proper little English countryside community. We explored around Land's End, which often reminded me a lot of Invercargill/Bluff in New Zealand. We went to the amazing old house/mansion Lanhydrock as part of the National Trust and I really enjoyed exploring the big old house with separate servants quarters etc, just like in so many of the TV shows etc. We looked around Truro where we also had afternoon tea in a fantastic, classic teahouse called Charolotte's Tearooms which were very popular so we had to wait in line for a table. We had a great night out at the local pub (literally about 5 doors down from Bill and Stephanie's place in the wee village of St Issey) called the Ring O Bells which was around in the 1600s and was packed! I loved being in a pub so old. Could really imagine people having used it for the past few hundred years. The ceilings were so low! There was an Irish Band playing which was really great! I drunk a lot of Pimms during my time in Cornwall, and met many interesting characters! Some of which were at Steph's crafts group (like a coffee group) which I got invited a long to one afternoon. So interesting to get a glimpse in to. One my last day we had a beautiful Sunday lunch at an incredible restaurant with the most amazing view. All was very special! Oh and driving around Cornwall I couldn't believe how narrow many of the lanes we were using were! And line with greenery! Was like you were driving through a hedge! You couldn't see a thing and I loved it! So cool to experience being in the English countryside like that. Just like in Emmerdale or many of the war time movies etc that I've seen which are often set in these kinds of places.

When I left Bill and Steph gave me a special fight, a hair clip made of Cornish tin. Even though I'd at times felt a bit overwhelmed at not really having any time to myself while in Cornwall, I instantly missed them and my time there once I left! Like Mum I will remember my time with them forever, and like many other English people I too am now a fan of Cornwall!

  • Day 32

    London, United Kingdom.

    July 28, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

On my return from Cornwall, I moved straight in to my new flat in Acton. I was really lucky to find a great flat, not super flash, but definitely still really nice and clean and tidy, and with a bunch of really awesome flatmates - the most important thing! My first couple of nights here though were some of the only times I've felt a little homesick, but it quickly passed. I think possibly because it felt odd leaving the comfort and security of being with Bill and Steph, to moving to an almost empty flat that I felt unfamiliar in (all but one of my new flatmates were away on Summer holidays when I first arrived, so naturally everything felt much better once they all got home). Unfortunately though, on my first Friday night in the flat, I bloody went and fell down the stairs (absolutely no alcohol involved!!!) and fractured my ankle. Even though I'm well aware that there's much worse things going on in the world, I did get pretty upset about it that night and also at the hospital the next day. It really just did ruin all the dancing plans etc that I had made and worked hard for, meant that my overall fitness was hindered yet again as still hadn't recovered properly from last year's heart surgery, made feeling comfortable and settled in a new city even harder, meant that I couldn't start working as soon as I'd planned, and just of course made me wish I was at home because dealing with medical issues etc are just always so so much harder in a country away from home. Gabby came all the way across London to the hospital I was at though, and made me feel as good about the situation as possible. She was so awesome and really did an amazing job of looking after me <3 So from here on my London plans also changed quite drastically! Good buy dance classes, and audition seeking etc.....Helloooo lots of enforced rest and netflix watching etc. I feel like I managed to find a good balance of still getting out and seeing London though. While also doing anything I possibly could to help my foot heal. Managed to finally set up a UK Bank account which as many people know or have experienced for themselves, was an absolute nightmare of a process to do.

I also started to get to know some of my family from over here! Dean and Kerry (Dean is my Dad's younger cousin) have been especially awesome. They are such cool people, and such a great couple, and have really gone out of their way to make me feel welcome and include me in things. I really really like them and am so pleased to have them in my life now. Have met heaps of other family members too, from both the James and Stacey side of my Dad's family. One of the most special being Uncle Colin, my Nana's 'baby' brother who I've always heard her talk about and she definitely has a huge soft spot for :-) Dean is Colin's son. Another person that's been awesome to spend time with has been my old very best friend from primary and intermediate school, Vicky Peck! Has been so awesome and special to reconnect with her over here, and I'm so pleased that our 5 year old selves knew to make friends with each other :-) She's who I did the London open roof Bus Tour with during this time - and yes the moonboot came along too.

Once I was under way with some Physio and my leg was starting to heal a wee bit etc I also started working the odd day for a recruitment agency, so that was really interesting to get a taste of being part of the fancy corporate world in some of the big London City office towers! A very new experience for me. I also experienced the Notting Hill Carnival with Gabby and Vicky and some other friends, and continued to get to know my flatmates; one of the highlights being a night out we had together (again, moonboot in tow). Even with a fractured leg, it has still been really awesome setting up and discovering my new London Life :-)
