    Bungle bungles

    Tackling Purnululu (Bungle Bungles) a two hour dirt road drive into the park and well worth it. The southern section of the range in made up of bee hive like domes banded black and red shell. The red is iron oxide and the black Cyanobacteria. If this shell is damaged the sandstone underneath erodes.

    Mum and dad did the domes walk (met a yellow pythons in a cave) while we trekked to the window along the creek bed. Hottest walk ever with the sun blazing, the heat reflecting off the white sand and radiating off the black rock. Felt like you were in an oven. Then to Cathedral gorge around the domes and back to the car. Quick put the air conditioning on. After cooling off on the drive to the northern section of the park the walk to the Echidna Chasm was shaded and comes alive when the sun is overhead.

    Then back to the van park for a cool drink.

    Broome

    Nan and pop have contracted Covid-19 so we have hi-tailed it to Broome to be closer to a hospital just in case. We stopped in at the hospital at Halls Creek get some anti-viral medication.

    With Nan and pop in isolation we stop at free camp over night and the WA Govt provide advice on how to isolate in a caravan. Nan and pop are isolating at the caravan park In Broome.

    So far we are still testing negative, so providing support and sneaking out. We expect to be in Broom till about the 27th.

    A week later and Nan and pop are now both testing negative. They have decided to stay on in Broome for another week, nice spot and now they can do their sightseeing. We have decided to head down to Wolfe Creek Crater to have a look.    Baca lagi

    Sadly, mostly everything was closed. If not because of covid because the traditional owners let the places run down so much they weren’t allowed to open. Or we are white, not dressed well enough or for some other reason, I don’t think we smell but maybe🤔. Can’t even buy a pearl at the pearl farm. Not enough staff to be open at 3pm Friday. But in the bright side.

    The highlight of the day was the stop off at middle lagoon. A beautiful beach at the end of a 30klm bull dust covered corrugated track was open for the fee of $10. We had a swim, put the kayak in, had a paddle.

    Might be time to head back to the van for a gin and tonic.    Baca lagi

    Wolf Creek Crater

    The crater was created 300,000 years ago when a 50,000 t meteor became a meteorite. Officially second largest behind the crater in Arizona. It has been steadily filling in but well worth the look.

    Towing the van was tough work over the corrugated road. Even with tyres deflated. The graders had started work on the Tanami and who knows when on the crater road. I am not sure if we are getting better at bad roads but certainly getting more experience.

    Now we have stayed at Wolfe Creek, so now we can watch the movie. No it doesn’t appear we were murdered. The sounds of the night were limited to crickets and the occasional bird and the stars absolutely stare worthy.

    We pulled up at the campsite, it was to hot for a walk so set up then made fruit buns. Walked to the crater lookout in the evening and did the rim walk at sunrise.

    Then we faced to road back again. Didn’t seem as bad on the way back. Law of relative distance I think.    Baca lagi

    Derby

    Derby is a small town with a 50% indigenous population, crime rates are high. Derby was our staging point to Horizontal Falls and the Gibb River Road.

    Derby has the huge Kimberly tides and mudflats as far as the eye can see. The jetty was closed for maintenance, no fishing so we discovered alcoholic ginger beer at the pub instead. Yep I am a convert.

    Australia certainly has a chequered past with regard to the nations first people. I have included a picture of a prison tree. Aborigines were held in large boab trees on the way to Derby jail. The crime was normally being in the possession of beef. The penalty two years.

    During the early pearling days young aboriginal men were kidnapped to work in the pearling industry, this was called Blackbirding. The kidnapped also spent time chained at the prison tree on route.

    The water trough is over 100 meters long part of the overland stock route. Cattle were droved overland to be transported from Derby.    Baca lagi

    Mount barnett road - Gibb River Road

    No visit to Derby would be complete without a quick run along the Gibb River Road. As the road had recently been graded it was more like a highway than a 4WD trip.

    We scooted along past Queen Victoria’s Head, Warren argued it was more like John Howard. The wet lands with the flocks of brolga’s and The King Leopold Ranges.

    We stopped at the Adcock and Galvan gorges then continued on the Mt Barnett roadhouse. On the way back to Derby early in the evening it was amazing how many small owls were just sitting on the road. Luckily we missed them all.    Baca lagi

    Horizontal Falls

    From Derby we started our Horizontal Falls adventure where the bus collected us and whisked us to the local airport and sea plane flight to the falls.

    The Derby mudflats glistened in the afternoon sun and we looked for crocodiles as we flew over the bay.

    After a perfect water landing we arrived at our accommodation in the middle of Talbot Bay. The pontoon included a swimming tank and a tank open to the ocean. Three level house boat and plenty of spots to tie up sea planes and their super fast speed boats.

    Our first activity was meeting and feeding the tawny nurse sharks and whatever fish decides to visit that day. The fish are fed 10kg of barramundi a day so certainly are encouraged to visit.

    Next a fast boat ride to the falls. The falls are two adjacent inlets where the tide fills one bay then the next. And the water that goes in must come out with the receding tide. The Kimberly has tides up to 11mtrs. The water through the falls is 1000,000 litres per second resulting in turbulent eddies and whirlpools around the base of the falls. The inlets (wide and narrow gap) is 20 and 7mtrs across. When possible the boat will drive through the gaps. On our trip narrow gap was impassable.

    Now time for canapés and glass of wine while watching the sunset. Barramundi for dinner and a night lulled to sleep by the lapping water on the sides of the boat.

    Wake up call to see the sunrise have a lovely cooked breakfast, another fast boat ride through the falls and back for a scenic flight over the archipelago and back to Derby.    Baca lagi

    Derby back to Broome now heading south with Nan and Pop well and healthy.

    An hour from Broome we stop for three nights at Barn Hill Station. A spot where the red cliffs meet a beautiful white sandy beach.

    The camp was to say the least rustic. Limited electricity and water, the open air facilities did have flushing toilets but the sites were shady and the sunsets amazing.

    Mother’s Day started with eggs Benedict and finished with a lovely roast chicken dinner. Well prepared by Warren on the trusty Webber baby Q.

    From one end of the beach to the other is just over 5klm and perfect for a morning walk.

    I once again tried my hand at fishing and failed completely. Me standing thigh deep in water a lady rushes over to me and shows me a video she has just taken of two sharks feeding along the edge of the beach. Time to give up fishing, time for a ginger beer and to watch another sunset.    Baca lagi

    Marble Bar

    Marble Bar, the hottest town in Australia. Named for the distinctive rock bar that crosses the Coonhan River. The rocked was later discover not to be marble but jasper.

    Township proclaimed in 1980 prior to this was mining camp. Average age 34. It felt a nice safe town.

    Mt Nameless (aboriginal name jurndunmunha ) sits between the town and the mine. I am still not sure the 4WD trip up the mountain was worth the view and the views were spectacular.

    Rio Tinto Hamersley Iron. About 30mt iron ore exported per year. The ore trains (5 a day) 240 wagons carrying 120 tonne. Big trucks and big diggers. As expected mountains are replaced with holes..

    After mine tour and watching the induction video we headed up the Rio Tinto road to Karratha. Road was in good condition and we saw some ore trains up close.    Baca lagi

    Beware, there are said to be ghosts that roam the old stone jail and courthouse at Cossack.

    Built on the De Grey River was a vibrant shipping port until the advent of road and rail and devastation from cyclones saw its decline. Now a few stone buildings remain.

    Cossack is also known for the stair case to the moon sightings that occur when the Moonrise coincides with the low tide. After many stops and searching with some help we found the staircase and got our photo.    Baca lagi

    Turn off the road just near Karratha, drive down a dirt road to Cleaverville. You find a Camp without power and water perched on the waterfront with rock pools for exploring , spots for fishing and good phone signal.

    The water problem was solved with a couple of rain days, buckets and a funnel. The car and van got a wash as well.

    Surprisingly fishing was good for small fish so we threw back everything we caught. I caught a shark in inches of water, at the same time dad was wading out to unhook his snagged line. We all survived and the shark swam away to grow into a big shark.

    Port beach front town. Most cyclones crosses the coast here averaging two a year.

    Lovely water front beautiful sandy beaches and so many sandflys. Even coated with bushman’s and aero guard made no difference.Baca lagi

    The next bucket list item is to swim with a whale shark. ✅. We swam with two sharks one about 7mtrs and one slightly larger. The day started with a reef snorkel. The array of fish was stunning. When you entered the water you were greeted by a large school of brilliant little blue fish, then the reef unfolded with large clams, green parrots complete with cleaner fish, angel, clown and even a little leopard shark. After the swim we headed out side the reef to find the whale sharks. The swells were big at 3mtrs but we continued.

    When a whale shark was spotted you exited off the back of the boat and waited for the whale shark to swim past. The rules were to stay at least 3mths from the shark be behind its petrel fin as you swam with it. They forgot to tell the shark. As you scramble to get out of its way. I can confirm they are tawny coloured with spots have big mouths and have lots of little fish swimming in their faces. They are AWESOME. But swim to fast for me to keep up. You are then picked up by the boat again and redeposited back in the sharks path. We went with the Three Island tour and would highly recommend.

    Exmouth North West Cape where the Indian Ocean meets the pacific. And waves crash over the reef, stunning coastline. The grounding of the SS Mildura and the loss of 500 head of cattle brought about the construction of the lighthouse in 1907. The lighthouse is now replaced with a light on tower 2 of the VLF (very low frequency) station.

    The VLF communication station containing 13 towers is named after Harold E Holt , for the communication with submarines. Originally build for the US the town still has a baseball diamond, a drive in movie theatre and American street names.

    Running along side is the Cape Range with George knife gorge and Shothole canyon.    Baca lagi

    Blowhole

    Blow holes about 70klm North of Carnarvon. Very rugged coast line with the Indian Ocean swell smashing into the cliffs.

    The king waves have claimed 15 fishermen over the years. Luckily we survived as we visited frequently when we lived in Carnarvon.

    Protected from the swell by a islet was a lovely sandy beach complete with its own reef. We enjoyed a snorkel, hot donuts from the coffee van and headed the next 70klms of dirt road up to Red Bluff.    Baca lagi

    51 years ago we lived at Carnarvon so this was a nostalgic visit.

    We went to try to find our old house, went to the tracking station, out to the blow holes and to Red Bluff.

    Amazingly the wind wasn’t blowing when we were there, that surprised dad.Baca lagi

    Red Bluff

    We continue on from the Blow Holes up to Red Bluff and more incredibly rugged coast line. The relentless pounding from the waves have carved caves along the shore line of the bluff. I have included a photo of a couple of cave people.

    The swell creates fabulous surfing conditions as surfers brave the craggy rocked to catch the perfect wave. Certainly braver than I am.

    Proving the the whole area was once under the sea the rocks are imbedded with corals, shells and clams.

    We were even lucky enough to share our lunch with some locals.    Baca lagi

    Shell Beach

    Nestled in Shark Bay is Shell Beach. Due to the shape of the bay the water is extra salty. A perfect environment for Hamlin Cockle shells and an unfavourable environment for their predators. Hence the the beach made from only cockle shells and stretches 60klm up to 10mtrs deep in places.

    The co2 in rain water forms mild acid and dissolves the shells into a cement like structure. Up until the 1980’s the shell concrete was harvested as blocks for building.    Baca lagi
