...rushed from the main station to the airport by taxi, luckily the Bundesliga game was still on, so it took only ~15min, at the airport I was told to be the last passenger, hurry up and my suitcase was labeled. But luckily I could board...and had a decent flight via Lisbon and arrived in SaoPaulo the next morning (6am).
...bin dann mit dem Taxi vom HBF zum Flughafen gefahren, das Bundesligaspiel lief noch, so hat die Fahrt nur ~15min gedauert. Angekommen am Schalter wurde mir mitgeteilt, dass ich der letzte Passagier sei, mich zu beeilen habe und mein Koffer bekam noch einen zusätzlichen Hinweis.
Glücklicherweise konnte ich aber noch boarden und hatte einen guten Flug via Lissabon nach SaoPaulo (6 Uhr morgens angekommen).もっと詳しく

Landed safely in SaoPaulo, Guarulhos Aeroporto. To my relief: luggage also arrived and I was picked up by my friend Marcio. Arrived in SaoCarlos ~noon.

What a nice surprise, I was invited by Marcio, met Bruna (after a long time) and his two kids (for the first time). Brazilian lifestyle is intimidating....caipirinhas (served in a perfect glas) and bbq.
In SaoCarlos angekommen, hat Marcio mich zu sich nach Haus eingeladen, dort hab ich Bruna (nach langer Zeit) und seine beiden Töchter (bislang noch nicht gesehen) getroffen. Der brasilianische Lebensstil hat was....Caipirinhas in einem perfekten Glas und erstklassiges Grillen.もっと詳しく

On Wednesday morning Marcio brought me to the airport in Campinas, via Porto Alegre I reached Santa Maria later the day. Again some troubles during this trip: the plane in Campinas did not take off for 2h, problems with the airbus. But luckily, the time at Porto Alegre was sufficient to reach the connecting flight. From Porto Alegre on everything was getting smaller, the plane, the airport.
Oscar, my host here in SM, picked me up at the airport, a military airport, which is now used for some public flights. Very small, very tidy and the luggage is brought in by handwork. Reached my AirBNB appartemt, where I will stay for the next 2 1/2 weeks, so do not expect too many pictures during these times.
Am Mittwoch stand die Weiterreise nach Santa Maria an, Marcio hat mich morgens zum Flughafen in Campinas gefahren und dort sollte die Maschine um ~11 abheben, sie stand aber aufgrund von Problemen 2h am Flughafen. Aber der Flug konnte dennoch durchgeführt werden, und via Porto Alegre (die Zeit hier reichte, um das nächste Flugzeug zu erreichen) ging es dann nach Santa Maria RS. Das Flugzeug wurde kleiner, der Flughafen auch und das Gepäck wurde von zwei Mitarbeitern zur kleinen Abflughalle geschoben. irgendwie niedlich. Oscar, mein Gastgeber in SM hat mich dann zum Apartment gebracht, wo ich nun die nächsten 2 1/2 Wochen verbringen werde, bitte erwartet nicht eine Flut von Bildern in dieser Zeit.もっと詳しく

As announced, not so many things are worthwhile reporting in a travel blog, I took these days to get adjusted to the city, ....and the heat (>>30°C). The airBNB apartment is very nice, close to supermarkets, roughly 25min to go the inner city.
Wie angekündigt passieren in diesen Tagen natürlich nicht soviele Dinge, die in einem Reiseblog dokumentiert werden können. Ich hab jetzt die ersten Tage dafür genutzt, mich an die Stadt und die hohen Temperaturen zu gewöhnen, was aber nicht sehr schwer fiel. Vom airBNB apartment geht man ~25min zum Stadtkern, wäre angenehmer bei etwas geringeren Temperaturen.もっと詳しく

As mentioned, I did the lecturing in this week, up to 12 students attended. I hope it was ok for them, because of my problem not to speak any portuñol. But I enjoyed it very much, and I also got some positive feedback. Lets see if I can give this course next year again. Friday night I enjoyed the final with Ronny O'Rodrigues in a bar playing some biiliard, very nice.
Wie schon angekündigt bestand meine Tagesablauf darin, die Vorlesungen zu halten. Es gab natürlich Sprachschwierigkeiten, da ich kein Portunol spreche. Aber ich hab die Vorlesungen gern gehalten, positive Rückmeldungen gab es auch schon. Mal schauen, ob ich im nächsten Jahr die komplette Vorlesung halte. Am Freitag habe ich dann den Abschluss mit Ronny O'Rodrigues am Billardtisch verbracht.もっと詳しく

Today I took some pictures in Santa Maria, Vila Belga (beautifully painted houses) and the old railway station. Very interesting, I would consider the last one a member in my list of lost places, more or less within the city itself. Saturday evening was very nice, was invited to Mara (Oscars wife) and Oscar. Helmoz, a colleague, was also there and besides the wonderful food (Arroz Carreteiro, a typical dishfrom Rio Grande do Sul) and homemade bread, Oscar and Helmoz served their self-brewed beer. Very tasty. After this we played some poker, very relaxing Saturday evening.
Heute hab ich einige Bilder in Santa Maria gemacht, die meisten in Vila Belga mit seinen schön angemalten Häusern und dem direkt daneben liegenden Bahnhof. Dieser kann auf jeder Liste lost places auftauchen, dabei ist er mitten in der Stadt. Der Abend war dann sehr entspannt, Mara (Oscars Frau) und er haben mich zu sich eingeladen, es gab ein leckeres typisches Gericht dieser Provinz (Reis mit gepökeltem Fleisch), daneben gab es selbstgebackenes Brot. Herrlich! Danach haben Oscar und sein Kollege Helmoz, der auch da war, ihr selbstgebrautes Bier angeboten, besonders das Ale hat sehr gut geschmeckt. Today Oscar did a tour with me to Cacapava, in particular he wanted to go to an old copper mine, Minas do Camaqua. During this tour, I experienced Brazilian regional roads and secondary roads. When arriving the entrance area, we were told that only very recently the area was closed by the RS environmental department. Very dissapointing, because the pictures in the internet looked most intriguing. On the way the mine area, we passed the geopark Cacapava with some outstanding rock-formations. Even these sights were worthwhile the trip, as you can see on the pictures.
Heute hat Oscar einen Ausflug zu einer alten, stillgelegten Kupfermine Minas do Camaqua in der Nähe von Cacapava geplant. Leider ist vor wenigen Wochen das gesamte Gelände geschlossen worden, Informationen dazu waren im Internet aber nicht vermerkt. Sehr schade, denn die Bilder im Internet waren schon spektakulär. Allerdings haben wir auf dem Weg dorthin den Geopark Cacapava durchquert, sehr interessante Felsformationen. Die Strassenschilder dort sind auch für Gäste von auswärts ausgelegt.もっと詳しく

Today I will resume my stay here in Santa Maria RS and will head out to Buenos Aires. I had a great time, met friends and enjoyed myself a lot. On Tuesday I went for lunch with Graciela (Hendges), I did not take a picture with here, unfortunately. In the afternoon I finished my time at the UFSM, after this Cristiano from the UFN (a private university here in SM) took over. We also had good times, which culminated in a trip to farm, again close to Casapava (separate footprint). The pictures in this footprint may give you some impressions on the city.
Heute ist der Tag, an dem ich Santa Maria RS verlassen werden und nach Buenos Aires weiterfliegen werde. In dieser Woche hab ich, nachdem ich am Dienstag mehr oder weniger meine Aufgaben an der UFSM erledigt hatte, mich dann Cristiano und seiner Uni, der UFN, zugewandt und habe mit ihm auch sehr interessante Diskussionen (fachlich und privat) gehabt. Today Cristiano took me to a typical Gaucho farm south east of Santa Maria. There, mainly horses, cattle and sheep are being raised. This place fostered my impression of Brasil, especially the south, O Pampa (the Pampas). Huge farms, endless views and almost no people. I was deeply impressed. The Cabanha quatro C also has entries on google, successful auctions of horses are done at this place.
Riesige Farmen, fast unendliche Weiten und weitgehenst unbewohnt, das ist die Pampa. Cristiano hatte die Absicht, mir das Gaucho-Leben in dieser Gegend zu zeigen, genauer auf einer Farm südöstlich von Santa Maria. Es war ein extrem beeindruckender Ausflug, der mein Bild von Brasilien nochmals verstärkt hat. Die Farm dort (Cabanha quatroC) hat auch Einträge im Internet, da sie dort sehr erfolgreiche Pferdeauktionen durchführen.もっと詳しく

Left Santa Maria RS on April 1st and arrived via Porto Alegre very late in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was picked up by Cecilia and her spouse. I was several hours in the hotel before Renate arrived ~7am. After some hours of sleep we decided to explore the city and went for a Hop-on/Hop-off tour. The ride was quite lengthy and showed the extensions of this huge city. In evening times we were invited by Cecilia and her 'director' Javiel Ramirez to have a typical Parrilla, which means more or less having a lot of excellent meat. It was a wonderful evening, which left us also stuffed.
Am 1. April hab ich Santa Maria RS verlassen und bin via Porto Alegre sehr spät (23.30) in Buenos Aires angekommen, wo mich Cecilia und ihr Freund abgeholt haben. Renate kam dann am 2. April morgens früh (gegen 7) im Hotel an und hat erst mal ein klein wenig Schlaf nachgeholt. Wir haben uns dann vormittags entschieden, mit einem Hop-on/Hop-of Bus die Stadt zu erkunden. Die gesamte Runde hat ~4h gedauert, dabei bekam man sehr gut die Ausmasse dieser riesigen Stadt mit. Abends hatte uns Cecilia und ihr Chef, Javiel Ramirez zu einem typischen Essen (Parrilla) eingeladen, das bedeuet immer sehr viel exzellentes Fleisch. Es war ein sehr schöner Abend, wir haben viel diskutiert und erfahren, danach sind wir mit vollem Magen zurückgebracht worden.もっと詳しく

Today I visited the Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences, huge building. I was shown around by Cecilia and Javiel. At 1pm I gave a seminar, which was nicely attended. Intensive discussions with Jorge Palermo, who worked with Paul Scheuer in Hawaii. After this, me and Renate enjoyed some helados, over here they claim, that is the best icecream in the world. I would say: coming close, but we need more to decide.
Heute hab ich die Chemische Fakultät besucht, ein riesiges Gebäude. Ich wurde von Cecilia und Javiel herumgeführt. Um 1 hab ich dann einen Vortrag gehalten, es gab sehr intensive Diskussionen mit Jorge Palermo, ein früherer Mitarbeiter von Paul Scheuer in Hawaii. Den Tag ausklingen lassen haben Renate und ich mit einem Eis, von dem die Leute hier sagen, dass es das beste Eis der Stadt ist. Wir benötigen noch weitere Kostproben...もっと詳しく

this morning we took the Colonia Express to Colonia del Sacramento. Planned just as a stop over, still we were able to explore this most picturesque little city (we will continue on Thursday, so more picture by then). Taking a coach bus to Montevideo brought us comfortably to the capital of this nice country. Seems to have a relaxed atmosphere, we experienced the nice ocean views and will discover the city tomorrow.
Heute morgen sind wir früh mit dem Colonia Express nach Colonia del Sacramento aufgebrochen. Das Mündungsdelta des Rio del la Plata ist riesig, die Fähre dauerte ~1.5h. Der Zielort ist ein Touristenmagnet, wir hatten kurz Zeit, diesen äußerst schönen und historischen Ort zu besichtigen. Auf der Rückfahrt übermorgen haben wir mehr Zeit, dann berichte ich ausführlicher drüber. Ein Coach-Bus hat uns danach nach Montevideo gebracht, unser Hotel hat eine Toplage, direkt am Strand. Today we explored wonderful and relaxed Montevideo. The old town has beautiful art deco and art nouveau buildings, never seen so many in one city. The walking, though, made us quite hungry and we went to a place called Puerto Market. Here we tried Uruguayan meet, which is supposed among the best in the world. True, it was outstanding, more impressive, however, were the huge barbecues packed with meat.
Heute haben wir Montevideo 'erobert', es ist eine sehr relaxte, wunderschöne Stadt. Die Altstadt besteht aus einer Vielzahl von ArtDeko und Jugendstilhäusern. Um die Mittagszeit sind wir dann in eine Markthalle gegangen, die in jedem Reiseführer erwähnt wird, Puerto Market. World heritage site Colonia deserves to be on this list, wonderful, post-card like old city. We explored during a 6h stop over from Montevideo this historic place, had lunch with a wonderful view on the Atlantic Ocean and enjoyed our stay very much.

Today we had another relay day in Buenos Aires before taking of to Ushuaia. We used the time to visit one of the most well-known cemeteries in the world, The Recoleta. Never seen something like this before, the pictures we took can only give a hint on the sights at this place.

Yesterday late evening we arrived at Ushuaia, Patagonia. You might always have some dream destinations, this is definitely one of mine. What impressed me always was the fact that even the smallest Map of the World had besides the mega-mega cities Ushuaia on it. Most southern city of the world. Today we will also explore this city, already some pictures of our flight to Fireland.
Gestern spät abends sind wir in Ushuaia, Patagonien angekommen. Diese Stadt hat mich immer fasziniert, einer der Gründe war, dass selbst auf der kleinsten Weltkarte immer der Ort Ushuaia vermerkt war, neben all den extremen Metropolen. Nun sind wir in der südlichsten Stadt der Welt angekommen, die wir heute erkunden werden. Vorab aber schon mal einige Bilder vom Anflug auf Feuerland.
Saturday 8th we spent in the city, we realized the weather can change within minuties, in our case it did so contstantly during the day. We explored the city and did a bus ride for ~2h, where we could experience all weathers.
den Samstag haben wir genutzt, um die Stadt zu erkunden. Dabei haben wir alle Jahreszeiten (Schnee, starken Wind, Wolken, sonnige Abschnitte) durchlaufen, und dieses mehrmals am Tag. Ist schon extrem das Wetter hier. Hier haben wir auch die einzigen Pinguine auf unserer Tour gesehen.もっと詳しく

For our second day in Ushuaia we booked a tour to the Parque Tierra del Fuego, which is supposed to be very nice, ....again, the weather god was not on our side. Snow, gusty winds, but we made the best out of it. Later we saw pictures of crusaders, who visited the parque on Saturday (because of the weather in Ushuaia we stayed in the city), it looked awesome. We did the offered train tour, was fun.
Am unserem zweiten Tag in Ushuaia hatten wir eine tour in den Parque Tierra del Fuego gebucht, diese Tour wird überall wärmstens empfohlen, naja, es war kalt und hat fast durchgehend geschneit. Wir haben das beste draus gemacht, haben auch die historische Zugfahrt gemacht. Später haben wir dann Bilder von gemeinsamen Kreuzfahrern gesehen, die am Samstag (wir hatten und wg. des Wetters in Ushuaia dagegen entschieden) gefahren sind. Absolut grossartige Bilder.

On Sunday afternoon we checked in to Ventus Australis, our cabin was upgraded and our tension was raising when entering the ship.
Am Sonntag nachmittag konnten wir dann endlich für die Ventus Australis einchecken, unsere Kabine wurde sogar höhergestuft, was uns natürlich gefreut hat. Insgesamt stieg die Stimmung.もっと詳しく
