    Teyuna (Ciudad Perdida)

    In the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a massive thousand-year-old city was "discovered" by graverobbers in the 1970s. After it became an official archaeological site, it also turned into a popular trek for tourists keen to learn more about the region's history and contemporary indigenous culture. While not much is known about the civilization that originally constructed the site (later descendants were wiped-out through colonization and disease), Teyuna is a sacred space for the four indigenous tribes now living in the region (Wiwa, Kogui, Arhuaco and Kankuamo). What's more, the influx of tourists (regulated by local communities) has really turned around the lives of people living in the remote region, who until very recently depended on coca cultivation and narcotrafficking to survive.
    We joined a trek run by members of the Wiwa tribe, and enjoyed 4 sweltering days in the mountains. Between walking, sweating, jumping in the river and sweating some more, we enjoyed the opportunity to learn lots from our guide, Rafael. On the third day, we finally reached the city, and spent half a day exploring the ruins. Then, more hiking (and sweating) our way down out of the mountains!

    In der Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta wurde in den 1970er Jahren eine riesige, tausend Jahre alte Stadt von Grabräubern "entdeckt". Nachdem sie offiziell als archäologische Stätte anerkannt wurde, entwickelte sie sich zu einem beliebten Ausflugsziel für Touristen, die mehr über die Geschichte der Region und die zeitgenössische indigene Kultur erfahren wollten. Obwohl nicht viel über die Zivilisation bekannt ist, die die Stätte ursprünglich errichtete (spätere Nachkommen wurden durch Kolonisierung und Krankheiten ausgelöscht), ist Teyuna ein heiliger Ort für die vier indigenen Stämme (Wiwa, Kogui, Arhuaco und Kankuamo), die heute in der Region leben. Darüber hinaus hat der Zustrom von Touristen (der von den lokalen Gemeinschaften reguliert wird) das Leben der Menschen in dieser abgelegenen Region, die bis vor kurzem vom Kokaanbau und Drogenhandel abhängig waren, wirklich verändert.
    Wir schlossen uns einem Trekking an, das von Mitgliedern des Wiwa-Stammes durchgeführt wurde, und genossen vier schwüle Tage in den Bergen. Während wir wanderten, schwitzten, in den Fluss sprangen und noch mehr schwitzten, hatten wir die Gelegenheit, viel von unserem Guide Rafael zu lernen. Am dritten Tag erreichten wir endlich die Stadt und verbrachten einen halben Tag mit der Erkundung der Ruinen. Dann wanderten (und schwitzten) wir weiter und stiegen aus den Bergen hinab!

    Santa Marta

    Before and after the Ciudad Perdida hike, we were based in Santa Marta. It's the oldest surviving colonial city on South America, though these days is somewhat like a smaller, slightly quieter cousin on Cartagena. It was a great place to relax, enjoy strolling along the waterfront and join the local frisbee team, Ysanga, for two training sessions.

    Vor und nach der Wanderung durch die Ciudad Perdida hielten wir uns in Santa Marta auf. Es ist die älteste noch erhaltene Kolonialstadt Südamerikas, obwohl sie heutzutage eher wie eine kleinere, etwas ruhigere Cousine von Cartagena wirkt. Es war ein großartiger Ort, um sich zu entspannen, an der Uferpromenade entlang zu schlendern und sich dem örtlichen Frisbee-Team Ysanga für zwei Trainingseinheiten anzuschließen.    Leggi altro

    Minca

    Once again, we headed away from the coast and up into the mountains. This time, we spent a few days in Minca, enjoying a cooler and rainier side of the Caribbean coast. Here, we spent a lot of time hanging out with the various animals at our hostel, and also enjoying walks through the jungle surrounding it. Very relaxing!

    Wieder einmal ging es weg von der Küste und hinauf in die Berge. Diesmal verbrachten wir ein paar Tage in Minca und genossen die kühlere und regenreichere Seite der Karibikküste. Hier verbrachten wir viel Zeit mit den verschiedenen Tieren in unserer Herberge und genossen Spaziergänge durch den umliegenden Dschungel. Sehr entspannend!    Leggi altro

    Gente de Medellín

    Medellín und seine Bewohner sind nicht einfach in Worte zu fassen. Die meisten sind freundlich und v.a. stolz auf ihre Stadt. Doch eine gewisse Hektik, sichtbare Armut auf der einen und sichtbarer Reichtum auf der anderen Seite, buntes Nachtleben, Straßenhändler, Prostitution, kulturelle Vielfalt... prägen das Stadtbild. Die Bilder sind bei zwei Fototouren durch das Zentrum entstanden und zeigen eher die schöneren Seiten des ökonomischen Zentrums Kolumbiens, das trotz seiner traurigen Geschichte und der beschriebenen Zerrissenheit ein Gefühl von Aufbruch und Zuversicht ausstrahlt.

    Medellín and its inhabitants are not easy to put into words. Most of them are friendly and proud of their city. But the city landscape is characterized by a certain hustle and bustle, visible contrast between visible poverty and wealth, colorful nightlife, street vendors, prostitution, cultural diversity etc etc etc. The pictures were taken during two photo tours through the center and show rather the nicer sides of the economic center of Colombia, which despite its sad history and the recent turmoil radiates a feeling of awakening and confidence.     Constance celebrated her 33rd birthday in Medellín! There was a lovely breakfast (a baguette with candles), some sweets shared in Spanish class and a romantic dinner in the evening. A delightful day!

    Kurzer Ausflug zum Skate-/ BMX-Park in Prado. V.a. die Biker haben echt krasse Tricks gezeigt und generell war eine schöne und entspannte Stimmung. Dann kam der Regen.

    Medellín

    We spent just over a week in the beautiful city of Medellín, mostly spent at out Spanish language school. However, we also has a bit of time to explore the chaotic downtown and visit Communa 13, a former slum turned vibrant center of art and urban renewal (see other albums). The city could be a bit gritty, but was also full of colour and sculpture, dominated by a lot of work by Francisco Bottero. One photo shows a dove sculpture that was blown up in 1995 by terrorists. It's replacement now stands proudly beside the original.

    Wir haben etwas mehr als eine Woche in der schönen Stadt Medellín verbracht, die meiste Zeit davon in unserer Spanischschule. Wir hatten aber auch ein bisschen Zeit, um die chaotische Innenstadt zu erkunden und Communa 13 zu besuchen, ein ehemaliges Slum, das zu einem lebendigen Zentrum für Kunst und Stadterneuerung geworden ist (siehe andere Alben). Die Stadt ist zwar etwas düster, aber sie ist auch voller Farben und Skulpturen, die vor allem von Francisco Bottero geschaffen wurden.     After a week or so in Medellín, we were ready for a little peace and quiet. A long bus ride took to Salento, a beautiful village in the middle of the Zona Cafeterra (coffee-growing zone). We relaxed there for a few days, using the sleepy town as a base for a few adventures in the area. During downtime, we also enjoyed the 360° views of rolling green hills and coffee plantations, sampling some of the region's best beans. One evening, we also discovered a favorite Colombian past time, Tejo. It's a bar game similar to boules (throwing metal weights as close as possible to a target), but with explosions (small gunpowder charges that blown up when you score...).

    Nach etwa einer Woche in Medellín waren wir bereit für ein wenig Ruhe und Frieden. Eine lange Busfahrt führte uns nach Salento, einem schönen Dorf inmitten der Zona Cafeterra (Kaffeeanbaugebiet). Dort entspannten wir uns ein paar Tage lang und nutzten die verschlafene Stadt als Ausgangspunkt für ein paar Abenteuer in der Umgebung. In unserer Freizeit genossen wir die 360°-Aussicht auf die sanften grünen Hügel und die Kaffeeplantagen und probierten einige der besten Bohnen der Region. An einem Abend entdeckten wir auch eine beliebte kolumbianische Freizeitbeschäftigung: Tejo. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Kneipenspiel, das dem Boule-Spiel ähnelt (man wirft Metallgewichte so nah wie möglich an ein Ziel), aber mit Explosionen (kleine Schießpulverladungen, die in die Luft gehen, wenn man einen Treffer erzielt...).     Café Luger

    In dieser kleinen Finca dürften wir in authentischer Campesino Tracht den kompletten Kaffezyklus miterleben bzw. selber durchführen:
    1. Ernte, 2. Häutung, 3. Waschen, 4. Trocknen, 5. Dreschen, 6. Röstung, 7. Mahlen.

    Dabei lernten wir einige interessante Fakten:
    - in Kolumbien wird v.a. Arabica angebaut
    - es gibt einen
    Röstunterschied zwischen kolumbianischen (120° -12min) und "europäischem" Kaffee (180°-20min)
    - daher ist kolumbianischer Kaffee in der Regel etwas fruchtiger und floraler
    - Brasilien ist größtes Kaffeeanbaugebiet weltweit
    - mit einem Parasit befallener Kaffee wird hier länger geröstet und als billiger Tinto verkauft
    - Kaffeebohnen haben eine süßliche
    Schleimschicht, diese kann auf der Bohne getrocknet werden und der Kaffee wird als yellow honey verkauft

    In this small finca, we were allowed to experience the complete coffee cycle in "authentic" campesino costume or do it ourselves:
    1. harvest, 2. skinning, 3. washing, 4. drying, 5. threshing, 6. roasting, 7. grinding.

    In the process, we learned some interesting facts:
    - in Colombia mainly Arabica is cultivated
    - there is a roasting difference between Colombian (120° -12min) and "European" coffee (180°-20min)
    - therefore Colombian coffee is usually a bit more fruity and floral
    - Brazil is the largest coffee growing region in the world
    - coffee infested with a parasite is roasted longer here and sold as cheap Tinto
    - Coffee beans have a sweetish

    Salento is the gateway to the Cocora Valley, a spectacular and verdant collection of forest and rivers. It's particularly famous for its giant wax palms. We did a short day hike, and enjoyed birdwatching at a little Finca high on the mountainside at the halfway point.

    Salento ist das Tor zum Cocora-Tal, einer spektakulären und grünen Ansammlung von Wäldern und Flüssen. Es ist besonders berühmt für seine riesigen Wachspalmen.     Finca Argentina (Nevado de Tolima)

    While in the Zona Cafeterra, we planned to visit the National Park Nevado de Tolima, but alas! It was closed due to volcanic eruptions farther north (but you can't really argue with that...). Luckily, we found an agency that was leading a trek in the mountains outside of the park. The first day, we hiked up the Valle de Cocora to the Finca Argentina, our base for the next two days. The finca was owned by a family that managed herds of cattle, sheep, and mules - a great opportunity for insight into life for Colombians in remote mountain regions. It's tough, and we have a lot of respect for their hosts and their hard work every day. We were also intrigued by the litter of Chihuahuas living there. They didn't quite fit into the whole rugged frontier vibe, but we're pretty cute all the same.

    Während unseres Aufenthalts in der Zona Cafeterra wollten wir den Nationalpark Nevado de Tolima besuchen, aber leider war er wegen eines Vulkanausbruchs weiter nördlich geschlossen (aber dagegen kann man ja nichts sagen...). Glücklicherweise fanden wir eine Agentur, die eine Wanderung in den Bergen außerhalb des Parks anbot. Am ersten Tag wanderten wir das Valle de Cocora hinauf zur Finca Argentina, unserer Basis für die nächsten zwei Tage. Die Finca gehörte einer Familie, die Rinder-, Schaf- und Maultierherden bewirtschaftete - eine gute Gelegenheit, einen Einblick in das Leben der Kolumbianer in abgelegenen Bergregionen zu gewinnen. Es ist hart, und wir haben großen Respekt vor den Gastgebern und ihrer harten Arbeit, die sie jeden Tag leisten. Wir waren auch von dem Wurf Chihuahuas fasziniert, der dort lebte. Sie passten zwar nicht ganz in das Bild der rauen Grenze, aber wir sind trotzdem ziemlich süß.    Leggi altro

    After the finca, our actual hike led up the Cañon de Media Luna to a small peak called Cerro Chispa (4500'). However, the main attractions were, for one, the views of mountains and glaciers in the national park , and, the Paramo. Páramo is a special kind of high-altitude Andean bog found only in a few tiny corners of South America. The crazy plants are called Frailejones and can grow to be hundreds of years old. It was beautiful! We were lucky with the weather and our lovely guide, Janier, who made the trek very special with some extra touches (like freshly brewed coffee at 4000'). After sleeping once more in the Finca Argentina we hiked back to Salento and celebrated with a nice meal and another rousing round of techo.

    Nach der Finca führte unsere eigentliche Wanderung über den Cañon de Media Luna zu einem kleinen Gipfel namens Cerro Chispa (4500'). Die Hauptattraktionen waren jedoch zum einen die Aussicht auf die Berge und Gletscher des Nationalparks und zum anderen der Páramo. Der Páramo ist eine besondere Art von Hochgebirgsmoor in den Anden, das nur in einigen wenigen winzigen Ecken Südamerikas vorkommt. Die verrückten Pflanzen werden Frailejones genannt und können hunderte von Jahren alt werden. Es war wunderschön! Wir hatten Glück mit dem Wetter und unserem netten Führer Janier, der die Wanderung mit einigen Extras (wie frisch gebrühtem Kaffee auf 4000') zu etwas ganz Besonderem machte. Nachdem wir noch einmal in der Finca Argentina geschlafen hatten, wanderten wir zurück nach Salento und feierten mit einem guten Essen und einer weiteren Runde Techo.    Leggi altro

    Before we reached Bogotá, we had heard a lot about it from other Colombians. Suffice to say, it doesn't have a great reputation. But Gregor and I loved it - oddly enough, it reminded us of Berlin. We spent .oat of the time exploring the old town of Candelaria and its colorful cast of characters. Gregor also participated in - and came third in - a chili eating contest. A great introduction. But we will come back!

    Bevor wir Bogotá erreichten, hatten wir von anderen Kolumbianern schon viel darüber gehört. Es genügt zu sagen, dass die Stadt keinen guten Ruf hat. Aber Gregor und mir gefiel es - seltsamerweise erinnerte es uns an Berlin. Wir verbrachten die meiste Zeit damit, die Altstadt von Candelaria und ihre bunten Gestalten zu erkunden. Gregor nahm auch an einem Chili-Wettessen teil - und wurde Dritter. Ein toller Einstieg. Aber wir werden wiederkommen!    Leggi altro

    For her birthday, a group of friends gave Constance money to put toward a rock-climbing course. Las Rocas de Suesca is a huge cliff formation north of Bogota, and the perfect opportunity to learn the ropes (ha...). Our guide was Juan Peterson, and experienced guide who spent three days with us trying out different Multi-Pitch routes, learning about safety and having a lot of fun. In hindsight, a lot of the pictures look terrifying, but we were in great and steady hands. It was challenging (more mentally than physically to be honest...), but a wonderful experience. Thanks, friends!!!

    Zu ihrem Geburtstag schenkte eine Gruppe von Freunden Constance Geld für einen Felsenkletterkurs. Las Rocas de Suesca ist eine riesige Felsformation nördlich von Bogota und die perfekte Gelegenheit, um das Klettern zu lernen. Unser Guide war Juan Peterson, ein erfahrener Bergführer, der drei Tage lang mit uns verschiedene Mehrseillängenrouten ausprobierte, uns Sicherheit beibrachte und eine Menge Spaß hatte. Im Nachhinein sehen viele der Bilder erschreckend aus, aber wir waren in guten und sicheren Händen. Es war eine Herausforderung (mehr geistig als körperlich, um ehrlich zu sein...), aber eine wunderbare Erfahrung. Danke, Freunde!!!    Leggi altro

    El Cocuy

    From the beginning of our trip in Colombia, we knew that we wanted to visit Parque Nacional El Cocuy - a final opportunity to set foot in thr mountains! We had a long bus ride up from Suesca, but happily a few days to acclimate to the altitude and cool mountain weather in the village of El Cocuy. There, we met our guide José and spent a few days prepping for the trek. The village itself was one of our high points in Colombia - a whole other pace of life, remote and beautiful. People were kind (and seemingly all related to one another...), and village life revolved around drinking hot panela (sugar water) by the central square and gossiping. A great start in the mountains again.

    Schon zu Beginn unserer Reise in Kolumbien wussten wir, dass wir den Parque Nacional El Cocuy besuchen wollten - eine letzte Gelegenheit, einen Fuß in die Berge zu setzen! Wir hatten eine lange Busfahrt von Suesca nach oben vor uns, aber glücklicherweise ein paar Tage Zeit, um uns an die Höhe und das kühle Bergwetter im Dorf El Cocuy zu gewöhnen. Dort trafen wir unseren Führer José und verbrachten ein paar Tage mit der Vorbereitung auf die Wanderung. Das Dorf selbst war einer unserer Höhepunkte in Kolumbien - ein ganz anderer Lebensrhythmus, abgelegen und wunderschön. Die Menschen waren freundlich (und anscheinend alle miteinander verwandt...), und das Dorfleben drehte sich um das Trinken von heißem Panela (Zuckerwasser) auf dem zentralen Platz und um Klatsch und Tratsch.     Laguna Grande (PNN El Cocuy)

    In our first day in Parque El Cocuy, we hiked with Jose up to Laguna Grande, a glacial lake near the snow line. The day was a bit grey, but despite limited views, we had a great time hiking through the otherworldly landscape of rocks and paramo (complete with Frailejones). On the way down, we caught a glimpse of El Púlpito del Diablo, a sinister-looking rock formation we would see the next day.

    An unserem ersten Tag im Parque El Cocuy wanderten wir mit Jose hinauf zur Laguna Grande, einem Gletschersee nahe der Schneegrenze. Der Tag war etwas grau, aber trotz der eingeschränkten Sicht hatten wir viel Spaß bei der Wanderung durch die unwirkliche Landschaft aus Felsen und Paramo (mit den Frailejones). Auf dem Weg nach unten erhaschten wir einen Blick auf El Púlpito del Diablo, eine unheimlich aussehende Felsformation, die wir am nächsten Tag sehen würden.    Leggi altro

    The mountains give, and the mountains take away. We started our hike on the second day with grey weather and drizzle, which gradually morphed into rain, sleet, and snow. By the time we reached the top (where El Púlpito was completely covered by storm clouds), we soaking wet and freezing. To his credit, our guide Wilson was pretty cheerful, but was also glad when we finally dragged ourselves back down to the valley for a hot cup of panela. Horrible conditions, but we're happy we made it down safely.

    Die Berge geben, und die Berge nehmen. Wir begannen unsere Wanderung am zweiten Tag bei grauem Wetter und Nieselregen, der sich allmählich in Regen, Graupel und Schnee verwandelte. Als wir den Gipfel erreichten (wo El Púlpito vollständig von Gewitterwolken bedeckt war), waren wir klatschnass und froren. Unser Guide Wilson war zwar ziemlich gut gelaunt, aber auch froh, als wir uns endlich wieder ins Tal schleppten, um eine heiße Tasse Panela zu trinken.     Ritacuba Blanco (PNN El Cocuy)

    Our final hike with José in El Cocuy was to the foot of Ritacuba Blanco, a sacred glacier. The sun was shining! It was a wonderful way to wrap up our time in the park, and we were happy we got all the way up to 5000m.

    Unsere letzte Wanderung mit José in El Cocuy führte uns zum Fuß des Ritacuba Blanco, einem heiligen Gletscher. Die Sonne schien!     Sogamoso

    On way back down south from the mountains, we spent a few days relaxing in Sogamoso. It's a hilly lake region not too far from Bogota, and known as a spot to get away from city chaos. It was perfect! We spent a few days hanging around in the garden of our hostel, and took a day trip to Laguna de Tota.

    Auf dem Rückweg von den Bergen in den Süden verbrachten wir ein paar Tage zum Entspannen in Sogamoso. Das ist eine hügelige Seenregion nicht allzu weit von Bogota entfernt und als Ort bekannt, an dem man dem Chaos der Stadt entfliehen kann. Es war perfekt!     Off to the Amazon! About ten days before our flight back to Berlin, we flew from Bogota to Leticia, the gateway to the wild, wild South. Leticia lies right by the river and serves as a sweltering and surprisingly chaotic 3-way border with with Brazil and Peru. Honestly, not the loveliest destination on our journey thus far, but a great spot to get our bearings before heading off into the jungle.

    Auf zum Amazonas! Etwa zehn Tage vor unserem Rückflug nach Berlin flogen wir von Bogota nach Leticia, dem Tor zum wilden, wilden Süden. Leticia liegt direkt am Fluss und dient als schwüle und überraschend chaotische Dreiländergrenze zu Brasilien und Peru. Ehrlich gesagt, nicht das schönste Ziel unserer bisherigen Reise, aber ein toller Ort, um sich zu orientieren, bevor es in den Dschungel geht.    Leggi altro

    Mocagua I

    During our stay in Amazonas, we were lucky to be able stay in the indigenous village of Mocagua for a couple of days. We really enjoyed talking with the locals and learning about life on the Amazon. We also spent hours bird-watching from our balcony - parrots and oropendolas galore. I had fingers crossed for a tapir on a night hike, but we were treated to a majestic frog and lots of tarantulas instead. One highlight was the village dance, where a.great time was had by all, but sadly no photos remain...

    Während unseres Aufenthalts in Amazonas hatten wir das Glück, einige Tage im indigenen Dorf Mocagua zu verbringen. Wir haben es sehr genossen, mit den Einheimischen zu sprechen und etwas über das Leben am Amazonas zu erfahren. Wir verbrachten auch viele Stunden damit, von unserem Balkon aus Vögel zu beobachten - Papageien und Oropendolas in Hülle und Fülle. Bei einer Nachtwanderung hoffte ich auf einen Tapir, aber stattdessen bekamen wir einen majestätischen Frosch und jede Menge Vogelspinnen zu Gesicht. Ein Höhepunkt war der Dorftanz, bei dem sich alle prächtig amüsierten, aber leider gibt es keine Fotos...    Leggi altro

    Mocagua II

    The rest of our time in Mocagua was spent enjoying birdsong and incredible views from our hostel. We also walked to the Maikuchiga monkey sanctuary, an open-air rehabilitation centre for monkeys rescued (mostly) from the illegal pet trade. We don't miss the heat or drenching ourselves in deet, but would return to Mocagua in the blink of am eye.

    Den Rest unserer Zeit in Mocagua verbrachten wir damit, den Vogelgesang und die unglaubliche Aussicht von unserer Herberge aus zu genießen. Wir spazierten auch zum Maikuchiga-Affenschutzgebiet, einem Freiluft-Rehabilitationszentrum für Affen, die (meist) aus dem illegalen Tierhandel gerettet wurden. Wir vermissen weder die Hitze noch das Durchnässen mit Insektengift, aber wir würden sofort wieder nach Mocagua zurückkehren.    Leggi altro

    San Antonio de Cacao

    One day during our stay in Mocagua, we took a trip to San Antonio, a Peruvian settlement on the other side of the river. We had time to wander around the village and surrounding farms (yuca, pineapple, cacao). Locals introduced us to local critters and important spiritual landmarks.

    An einem Tag während unseres Aufenthalts in Mocagua machten wir einen Ausflug nach San Antonio, einer peruanischen Siedlung auf der anderen Seite des Flusses. Wir hatten Zeit, das Dorf und die umliegenden Farmen (Yuca, Ananas, Kakao) zu besichtigen. Einheimische machten uns mit den örtlichen Tieren und wichtigen spirituellen Stätten bekannt.    Leggi altro
