    Launch... 3--2--1

    12. maj, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌧 72 °F

Starting the trip with a 4:30 am racist but punctual über driver, a super friendly American agent who tagged my bag as priority "just because", and a steaming cup of hot tea. No coffee x one month but that will soon be broken once I set foot in Sweden. But first, LCS conference in Houston. Here I go!!
Spoke too soon... Flight is delayed due to bad weather in Miami. Thank goodness my seat mate is cool. He's trying to get to Houston too. Hopefully my next post will be from Miami on the plane. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

  • Houston: over & out

Houston was great fun. Got to see a ton of friends and coworkers and learned a bunch of stuff. It was great but now I'm on top NYC to get Em!!

  • New yawk

    15. maj, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

I had a hecka travel day. One Uber driver no show, the second one dropped me off at the wrong terminal so I had to take the worlds sloooooowest train to get to the right one. Got through TSA relatively unharmed but shortly after, my phone blew up announcing my flight was significantly delayed (but get to the gate at the usual time just in case we can get out early). After the wonkiest and longest boarding process ever, me and the plane made it to NYC!!! Who cares how long it took... I'm ready to start the adventure!!! Now if only I can get my bag in time to get into an Uber in time to get to the hotel in time to order GLUTEN FREE PAD KEE MAO before the restaurant closes. Wish me luck!!Læs mere

I love hanging out in airports and thankfully Em does too. And she gets my weird obsession with being worried about not getting to the airport hours early. So we spent a glorious day hanging out. Oh, and for I mention I got to see Bean and get my favorite gluten free everything bagel double toasted with cucumber dill schmear before we headed out? Starting the trip out right? Yäh!Læs mere

  • Is there a doctor or nurse on board?

    17. maj, Sverige ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

We hunkered down for a Semi long flight. One wretchedly awful Delta meal and one screening of The Hunger games later, Em and I tried catching some Zzzs. Just as I was getting sleepy, an announcement blared overhead, "we need a doctor or a nurse. If you are a doctor or a nurse, please put on your call light". Forgetting that I haven't actually done any hands on nursing in a good 25 years, I boldly put on my call light and was quickly rushed to the front of the plane, with a harried flight attendant explaining that a passenger fainted and her husband needs reassurance. Ok...got it. The woman was fine, and after my little assessment and checkover, I declaired her viable. Her husband, on the other hand, was still mightily concerned, which I don't blame him for since he actually started giving her mouth to mouth before she came to. The flight attendant asked me if they should order an ambulance to meet us. "what the heck... Why not?" was my answer as I returned to my seat. Sleep impossible now, I got a viewing of Wicked while having a piss poor Delta breakfast, and we disembarked in Stockholm.
I saw my patient later and she was a walkie - talkie (nurse code for vertical and coherent). So all is well.
    Then we got coffee.
    Life is good!!!!!

  • Hoofin' it around stockholm

    17. maj, Sverige ⋅ 🌧 50 °F

We decided the best way to stay awake was to get out and walk. So going in the general direction of the ABBA museum, we walked for miles and miles, dipping in the absolutely cutest store and walking along the harbor. We had an hour to kill before out times museum Robles were ready so we decided to take a ferry ride to nowhere to see the sights from the water. Oh, did I mention it's been raining all day and 40 degrees? BrrrrrrrLæs mere

  • Thank you for the music

    17. maj, Sverige ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

The ABBA museum was chock full of sequined costumes, historical Freida and Benji facts, and a lot of Swedish people manically singing along to Waterloo. Our minds lasted about 30 minutes before we both needed to yeet away from the Swedish wholesome musical extravaganza.
After hitting a hamburger bar for some vittles and passing by a umpah band playing for a Netherlandic festival, we finally got to our hotel, checked in, and hit the hay.
7 1/2 miles walked, 24+ hours awake, and 7 modes of transportation in the past day (Ems for a thing for transport). Thrilled to be here with Weenie. See you tomorrow!!
Börk Börk börk! (I've been humiliating Emily by singing the Swedish Chef song from the Muppets. I think I'm hilarious. To bad she doesn't!)

  • Hitting the roman baths in Stockholm

    18. maj, Sverige ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

So we slept for 15 hours and obviously the prime thing we needed to do once awakening was get some more relaxation time at Centralbadet. That is, after we got some breakfast at the hotel which was a feast! Not only did they have a whole gluten free section but they had crispy or soft bacon, soft cooked eggs, and every kind of muesli topping ever invented.
The spa was über incredible and amazingly restorative. After getting a lecture on spa etiquette (sandals on at all times, no swimsuits in the saunas but please cover yourselves completely with the towels) we found our lockers and made the first stop at the showers. They are very serious in this area-- wash yourself with bathing suits off and in case we weren't certain how to do it, there was a poster showing the body parts to concentrate your pre-bath scrubbing (hair, pits, and bits... In case you were interested).
After reapplying our suits, we hit the roman baths. One was a deep plunge pool of perfectly hot water. One was jacuzzi style with under water lounge chairs (and with a super strong jet that rotor-rootered my vajayjay before I could frantically flail away), an icey cold water plunge pool (which I did thrice) and a circle path that brought you back and forth from a shin deep ice pool and hot pool.
After a while, we went into the shower room, removed our suits as instructed, and headed into the saunas wrapped in our towels. First stop was an incredibly hot salt steam room. I lasted 2 minutes. Next was an aromatherapy and crystal sauna which was much more pleasant. Emily said it smelled like a pizzeria.
We joined an old Swedish man in the "Nordic Hot Sauna" and again I lasted a mere minute before I had to leave, gasping for breath. But I found the cold air fan area and lounged there to quiet my screaming lungs. After a 10 minute ultra red light therapy session and some time in the sound/salt room, we headed to the swimming pool and did some laps. One more round in the roman bath and soon we were on our way, relaxed through and through and ready for adventure.
We walked a mile to achieve my dream--enjoying coffee and pastries in a traditional Swedish flïka at the year gluten free bakerei in Sweden. Sharing the pastries, we got to try a cinnamon roll, a vanilla raspberry pastry, and a princess cake.
    I like it here.
    Very, very much.

  • Old Town Stockholm

    18. maj, Sverige ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Sunday afternoon was a perfect day to stroll around the Cobblestone streets of Old Town - - a fun blend of tourist stores, Regal governmental buildings, and cafes in old stone buildings. We went in a gigantic 3 1/2 story science fiction bookstore. I tried reindeer sausage and we popped into a lamp store and a kids book store.
Hungry, we decided on the cutest Cafe where we got Swedish meatballs and lingonberries.
    Better than ikea's? You betcha.

  • The Big Red Bus

    18. maj, Sverige ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

This trip is going to include a hecka ton of different modes of transport and we decided to add one to our list: double decker Red Sweden 🇸🇪 Hop On/ Hop off bus. Our weary legs were thanking us and it was a glorious way to see all of Stockholm. It look us an hour to do one loop, and we're still on... So far, we have hopped on, but have yet to hop off. Might be riding this bad Boy until it shuts down tonight! I'll let you know.
Addendum: we did 2 hours, 1 1/2 circled around the city, jumped off near our hotel, grabbed dinner at Dirty Coco, and now are back in the room looking forward to Denmark tomorrow.
And it's 8pm and still bright as if it were 2pm.
    We be wicked north!

  • Brekkie

    19. maj, Sverige ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

I let the Ween (aka Emily) sleep in while I went down to sample as many Swedish breakfast delicacies as I could muster.
Pickled herring - - freaking delicious!! And reminded me of how I used to crave this when I was pregnant with Emily (but not with Oliver. Weird)
Liver pate - - also weirdly good and brought me right back to summers at Cape cod with I went through a liverwurst phase.
Bröd and butter - - as of at gluten free bread can be so in other words, it was fine.
Quark - like a super tart yogurt
    Gluten free muesli
    Turkish yogurt
    Fresh raspberry jam
Muesli mix station: pumpkin seeds, Chia seeds, coconut, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries
A vanilla gluten free cookie: like a grown up version of an animal cracker

    I am freaking full.

And I get to do it again in an hour when the ween wakes up!

Addendum: Emily's swedish breakfast included pancakes with strawberry compote, brown bread with meat and cheese.
I stole some cookies and crackers for the train ride.
Don't judge me. They are delicious.

  • Trains trains go away.

    19. maj, Sverige ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Welp. We had quite the train day.
    1. The dang metro attendant pointed us in the wrong direction. Intentional? Perhaps.
    2. Our gigantic suitcase does not have wheels big enough to support it's girth. Plus escalators make it extra challenging.
    3. We both got hecka cranky and spent about 15 minutes stewing. Then we got over it.
    4. The train was an hour delayed because of a damaged wire.
    5. Two Swedes sat behind me and talked ůber loudly for the first two hours.
    6. My Pepsi floated off my table and unloaded onto my lap.
    7. We made it to our connection but our bag was so big poor ween had to maguyver herself into the seat.
But now we are heading over the bridge to Denmark and the sky is blue and the sea is blue and we are no longer blue.

  • Denmark... HYGGETOWN

    19. maj, Danmark ⋅ 🌙 59 °F

The sucky train ride was worth it. I love Denmark!!! This city is gorgeous and just as unique as what you at in pictures. Our hotel is marvelous and close to all the fun stuff downtown. We had a beautiful supper right along the harbor and then walked all over downtown., dodging bikes and getting lost in that kind of great way that you know you'll eventually find where you need to go but will have hecka fun on the journey.
I think I'm gonna like it here!
Oh and it's 10pm and the sun is just starting to set.

  • Morning Coffee & a stroll in the park

    20. maj, Danmark ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Ohhhhh.... The breakfasts here.... I will be dreaming about them when I get home. Today was Chia pudding, carrot juice, cappuccino, gluten free bread with lingonberries and butter, and pepper slices.
Good thing to because we needed all the energy we could get for a day off sightseeing.

First on the list was a lovely stroll through an absolutely gorgeous park full of lilac bushes, funky pigeons and dogs of all manner of floofiness.

It even had a playground with a giant egg. A photo op that can't be missed.

  • Medical Museum... Right up my alley

    20. maj, Danmark ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

This museum did such a fun job of teaching all things medical while being tongue-in-Cheek about it.
For example, the was an exhibit about Gut Health, and what better way to educate the population about this important topic than by way of an interpretive dance.

There were lots of hands on items to try like the sight room and it's braille typewriter and VR demonstration of what it is like to have various kinds of eye disorders.

The tooth exhibit made me laugh with literal sets of teeth loaned to the museum by local kids.

The history of psych treatments was disturbing and fascinating as was the aging exhibit. And particularly funny was the letter from a woman to David Bowie asking him to loan some of his poop so she could do a decal transplant and become more like him.

    Danes are hilarious.

    1000000% glad I went.

  • Covid 19 exhibit medical museum

    20. maj, Danmark ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

So wild to check out an exhibit about covid 19 in Denmark because Emily was here during that time and almost missed her chance to get home before the borders were closed.

This exhibit was really interesting and meaningful to me. In particular, the art exhibit showcasing the number of used ppe and nasal swabs from one day. It's crazy we experienced this pandemic... And so interesting to learn how similar and different our two countries handled it.Læs mere

Em and I planned to meet up at the Danish museum of design. I got there first and spent more time looking at Danish furniture, textiles, and pottery than I ever thought I would. • Tivoli gardens

    20. maj, Danmark ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

After Em and I met up, we strolled on over to Tivoli - - part Scandinavian Disneyworld (walt actually based Disneyworld on Tivoli and you can definitely tell), part botanical gardens, and part foodie haven. We saw a robot lawn mower, a post-vomit incident on one of the rides, and a flock of peacocks.

Em decided it was time to head back for a hotel rest but I wasn't ready yet so she pointed me in the right direction and we took off on our separate ways.

  • The ruins

    20. maj, Danmark ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

This place have me the serious heebie-jeebies. Underneath the Castle, they unearthed ruins and put them on display for us tourists. But enthusiastic you go down into them, it's damp, smells damp, and feels damp. There are dark corners and tunnels which felt that there were definitely things lurking in the dark as you walked by. And they had wells lit from below so you could see just how deep they go (and nothing to stop you or your camera from falling into it besides a flimsy little guard rail).

To make it even creeper, they had a whole exhibit on the women who were imprisoned in the castle due to accusations of witchcraft. They had all these hands on exhibits involving wax dolls, toe nails, curse making, and crystal balls. It made the whole area feel sinister and I couldn't wait to get out!

  • The Black Diamond

    20. maj, Danmark ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

This must be the first nice day of the year because it seems like every single person in Copenhagen came out by the water, took off their shirts and focused on getting some serious vitamin d.

This sunbathing area happened to also hold "the second little mermaid". Yup me, this sculptures expression looked a little desperate, like she knew she's not the biggest tourist attraction but she wanted you to judge her on her own merits. Since I've heard over and over how not worth seeing the #1 real little mermaid sculpture is, I'm not going to go out of my way to see it. I'm perfectly happy with TLM2 and think she was just dandy.

To continue on with my museum explorations, I went into The Black Diamond museum to see their photography exhibit. I do love me photography. This was a cool exhibit showcasing everything from fashion to family portraits to wartime journalism to porn to story telling through photo.

And as I was leaving, I couldn't help but snap a Pic of the bike area. There are thousands of bikes in the city. Special bike lanes. Bikes that have a kid carrier behind our in front of the main rider. Delivery bikes. Bikes with flowers in the baskets. Thousands and thousands.

    Pretty neat stuff.

  • Freetown Christiana

    20. maj, Danmark ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

I feel that since I walked 8 miles, I deserve ice cream, right?

And then, let's walk some more! We headed to Freetown Christiana, a very interesting part of town with a strange history. It started as a freestanding comune of people wanting to separate from governmental regulations back in the 1970s. The government allowed them to do that and it has remained the same way since. Exceot there is one street that is renowned for being the "druggie and anything else you want that's illegal" Kind of streets. So historically you were not allowed to take photos on Christiana because the hashish dealers did not want to be in camera. But based on the signs, they are cracking down now on some of the illegal behaviors and welcome photo talking as a way to discourage the drugs.

Not sure how much longer "Freetown" will be free.

There were a ton of free range kids though. Ahhh... The joys of living on a comune. Must be a fun way to grow up!
