    Barmagui Sculptures, Dickinson Park

    Probably the most interesting from my point of view was the highly animated work of a teenage artist Portia Terlich. Named "Weeping World", this piece represents the choices we make every single day that shape our future. Interesting by day, this piece definitely takes on a more complex and striking shape at night. The entire piece rotates and comes to life with lighting and smoke effects. One of those images that lingers in your mind for a long time.

    In stark contrast is the artistic interpretation of the of a world leader that some feel defies logical explanation. Not much imagination is required here to feel what the artist is attempting to convey. Whether you think the artist has gone too far or not, one has to admit it is well done.

    Other pieces are probably more open to personal interpretation. The quality of the works is very high. Unfortunately space here precludes showing every piece, so my suggestion is to come here and see for yourself. The exhibition is on here and other places and well worth including in your itinerary.    Leia mais

    Food on the Road.

    Just because one is on the road there is no need to forego good food. Generally there are good opportunities to be creative when planning and preparing meals. Sometimes there are things that are planned that don't happen.

    Such was the rump steak. Stored right up to the use by date it needed to be used. The fridge runs at a very cool 2 degrees so we have never had food spoilage. The usual breakfast of muesli with berries and homemade Greek yoghurt. Nothing very creative there. Very tasty as usual. That rump steak was needing to be used though.

    The nights have been pleasantly cool so a nice pumpkin soup sounded like a great idea. But that rump? I decided to make barbecued pumpkin soup by barbequeing the pumpkin on the bidgee barbeque. The nicely caramelized pieces done in olive are ready for soup making tonight. All keeping nice and hot in the shuttle chef.

    The steak was thinly sliced and cooked along with onion on the barbecue. All added to Turkish bread with a little cheese and salad. A gourmet lunch as good as any restaurant. A larger lunch than usual and soup tonight. All minor problems fully resolved.    Leia mais

    Barmagui art, drumming and fireworks.

    Sometimes, you just happen to be in the right place at the right time. We spent the afternoon walking around a nice wetland area. On the way back we found an interesting display of artworks. Dozens of exhibits that were all quite interesting. We spoke to one of the artists and learned there was to be drumming and fireworks 9:00 at night.

    We spent quite a while walking around enjoying all the sculptures and decided we would return for the drumming and fireworks. Back at camp we had our supper and headed back to town for the show. We were early and managed to get quite a good spot. The drummers were just setting up.

    A couple of pieces were drummed and then as they continued to drum the fireworks started. For around 8 minutes the show played out. The boompity boom drums and the boom whoosh of the fireworks. We were so close that it filled our whole view. Some of the fireworks exploded into a universe of red glowing sparks that slowly descended down to the ground. Others kaboomed into colourful constellations that faded more quickly.

    This was a very serendipitous day.    Leia mais

    Michael Lerner Lookout.

    This vantage point let's you look north towards Bermagui. The very low bollards and rails are a suggestion to keep away from the very long drop over the cliff. Through the fence is an interesting land bridge that heads over 50 or so metres to a precarious track down to the sea.

    At a other point is an even more dangerous looking track that appears as if it may wind down a steep side towards a small beach. For now I will just have to wonder exactly where they go and how scary they really are.    Leia mais

    Paynes Island, Wallaga Lake.

    We are here waiting for the sunset. Flotillas of birds are bobbing around on the seaward side of the lake, but that is not the direction of the sunset. We will have a nice view of the setting sun later over the lake on the other side.

    The lake has been traversed with a causeway and a low bridge. Before the road the small island would have stood alone in the middle of the lake. We are sitting on the eastern side of the road. When the sun sets we will find a vantage to watch over the western side of the lake.

    A few spoon bills have just left on their way to a safe night roost. Sooty oyster catcher will most likely leave soon to their night rest. Where do the seagulls go? They always appear instantly from nowhere if you buy fish and chips. Perhaps there is a seagulls dimension. The swans also leave soon to head off to roost.

    Several fishermen emerge from under the low bridge on their way to the sand bank in the middle of the seaside lake. They beach their boat and head off with a bucket and yabby pump in search of bait that might take the interest of a nice legal sized fish. Two there people are fishing from the shore while others are stationed on rocks at the side of the road. The other side someone is strolling along the sandy edge entertain a dog.

    The cool breeze here is whispering through the shady oak trees after it lazily strums the ripples in the lake. Anyone out in the open sea is probably having thoughts if returning to shore before the going gets too rough.

    The sun is descending on its predictable arc towards the hills on the other side of the lake. There is the beginnings of a more rosy light over the lake.

    We decided to take our chairs over to ythe edge of the road. The low tide allowed us to sit and watch the show. It was a nice sunset but all over quite quickly. The heavy cloud on the horizon seems to have absorbed the sunlight. Now there is just a little reddish grey on the higher wispy clouds. A very relaxing way to end the day.    Leia mais

    Gillard Beach

    We took the dirt road in here and we're rewarded with a nice beach. The sand is quite yellow and is squeaky sand. When you walk on the dry sand it makes quite a loud noise. At the northern end is some pretty interesting rocks. The beach rolls of quite steeply and the waves look quite strong and treacherous. There are numerous warnings about swimming here.Leia mais

    Tuross

    Tuross head has some amazing coastline. There's a massive inlet to a large lake system to be north and a river to the south. The river runs out around a massive sand bank that sometimes gets removed when the river is in a high flood.

    That river actually flows into a huge lake system before it exits the sea. There are many properties around the perimeter of Tuross that enjoy a water view.    Leia mais

    One tree Hill.

    We dropped in to Tuross for a bit of a look and decided we liked the area. There were two spots with one tree nut this one was named.

    The views in both directions were very impressive. The one tree may be a replant but the lookout and seats have been very well done. Once again we Ave the powerful waves rashing onto be rocks with such a massive force.Leia mais

    Bunker

    On the Burrewarra Point walk, not far along the track is an interesting bunker noted on the entry sign as WW2.. Quite hidden among the bush I can only wonder what it's purpose was. It is not in a position that would have made it a good lookout point but could have housed supplies. Now it is in a sad state all covered in graffiti. Seems history takes a back seat when there is vandalism to be performed in a remote spot with little likelihood of detection.Leia mais

    The yellow bare feature is a point where some people walk out. Looks very dangerous to me.

    Burrewarra Point

    This walk was absolutely beautiful. At several vantage points there are spots to admire the coastline and take some photos. The path is easy to follow with the first part more like a road. After that it winds along the point until it turns back. The whole walk is only about 1.5k. There were interesting plants and creatures for the watchful eye to discover.Leia mais

    Guerilla Bay

    After walking the point we headed down another road that ended up at a typical sign one would see at the entry to a beach. This was also a protected area the same as the previous area. What was not so obvious was that we had descended down quite a bit from the high point we had just left.

    The beach was just a short walk of around 50m down a path with a few steps. A nice sandy beach that showed obvious signs of many visitors. There were thousands of footprints in the dry sand above the normal high tide point.    Leia mais

    Melville Lookout

    Stunning views to the north and south. We had been given a tip by a local to visit this spot. We did not have high hopes of actually finding it as he had not told me the name. Only very rough directions. Once we found the spot it was obvious that we had made it.

    The view to the north was towards where we had been and was unbelievably spectacular. To the south a bay of rocks inturuoting the waves on their way in to shore. This spot was very beautiful.    Leia mais

    Mossy Point

    Mossy Point would be the last point we would visit on this part of the coast today. A huge anchor was dedicated to the great old Captain Cook. Recovered from the bay and installed in pride of place on the point in 1970. The anchor was said to have been an aid to navigation for many years.

    At this point the waves were very impressive and photographs were attempted. Great views to North and south and some of the crashing waves.    Leia mais

    Batemans Bay, Water Garden Town Park

    A wetland area is a giant magnet. Here there were Flying foxes, or fruit bats, ducks, coots and other birds. The boardwalk over the lake was named the Buchanan-Rolfe boardwalk.

    Ducks were in huge numbers due in part to tourists feeding them. Sadly bread and other refined food makes them unhealthy and tends to have them hanging around for handouts.

    One of the men working there told us that there were large eels around a metre in length in the lake. It has been claimed by locals that they will attack and eat the ducks.

    The other birds were more cautious and tended to keep their distance. Up in the trees though were thousands of brown faced flying foxes. These creatures sleep during the day and head out at night to find food. As humans strip the land bard of the trees they prefer to dine in and sleep in during the day, they come into suitable areas in towns. Most of the locals prefer they were in someone else's back yards.

    This area is considered a water garden and much work is being done to make it a useful and beautiful place.    Leia mais
