  • Eumundi Markets

    July 12, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

First stop of the day — and the trip — was the Eumundi Markets for a wander and some breakfast. What a stunning day too, not a cloud in sight.

We heard a rumour that one of the stalls had Australia’s best vanilla slice. Bold claim… but no passionfruit on top, so it’s already disqualified in my book.

Tried a Malaysian Rendang Beef and Satay Chicken pie — absolutely packed with flavour. We also picked up a few infused salts, spice rubs and black garlic to pimp up our meals back in Newcastle over the next few weeks. Always nice leaving a market with snacks and a plan.

  • Double Shot

    July 12, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Last pick-up of a meat and cheese platter from Double Shot. I have no idea how they knew we were on the Mystery Picnic, they asked us before we even said hello.

  • The Big Pelican

    July 12, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

So, technically, this is the end of the Mystery Picnic... And while it is a beautiful location for a picnic, in our style, we changed the plans and will have it at the accommodation instead. Here was just a pretty walk and lunch instead.Read more

  • Pucca Restaurant (Not the picnic)

    July 12, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

This was a walk-past decision, which is not like us, but this was a seemingly underrated deliciousness. Every plate we had was super tasty. Coconut beef tartar, burnt butter and spice-rubbed corn, chickpea and potato balls, spanner crab samosas, buttermilk wings, and the best cooked swordfish I think I've ever had.Read more

  • The accommodation

    July 12, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Seriously, wow, what a special Airbnb find. Backing onto this forest in complete privacy is amazing. We've spent an hour in the spa listening to the forest and then again at night under the stars.

  • Matilda

    July 13, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

First stop for the morning is to see Matilda from the 1982 Commonwealth Games. Looking good for her age, though she's had a bit of work done. Fun fact that this Caltex (was Ampol) claims it was the first to set the standard of having a fuel station with separate parking for trucks and vans, a playground, and toilets.Read more

  • Mothar Mountain Rock Pool

    July 13, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

It’s a cute little spot — super quiet while we were there, probably because the cold kept everyone away. But you can tell it’s the kind of place that fills up on a hot day. The water’s clear and calm, perfect for a swim when the weather’s right. There’s also a short walk that loops over the creek — nothing strenuous, just enough to stretch the legs and take in the bush around you. Feels like one of those low-key locals' spots you’re glad to stumble across.Read more

  • Lake Alford

    July 13, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Up to Gympie for a short walk around Lake Alford — always a reliable spot for birdwatching, whether you’re into it or not. The place is packed with birds, especially waterfowl, which is lovely... unless you’re like me and slightly terrified of geese and swans.Read more

  • Dingo Creek Winery

    July 13, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

This was the other picnic we had planned for the weekend — a little hidden-away winery that felt like a bit of a secret. We were early, so we kicked things off with a wine tasting. Couldn’t resist leaning into our sweet tooth... their Moscato and Tawny were both hits, and I really liked the Kingfisher Viognier.

The picnic was just us, tucked away in the shade near the water. Cold meats and cheese, a seriously good brownie with candied walnuts, and a little sweets platter to finish it off. We even had a couple of bold little birdy friends keeping us company — clearly regulars. Super relaxed, quiet, and personal. And as a bonus, we got to keep the wine glasses from the tasting, which felt like a nice touch.

  • Noosa Botanic Gardens

    July 13, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

The last stop for the day — and the trip.
We wandered through the Noosa Botanic Gardens, a quiet, beautifully kept space right on the edge of Lake Macdonald. It was genuinely lovely — shady walking paths, pockets of rainforest, and wide-open lawns that felt peaceful in that laid-back Noosa way. There’s even a little Greek amphitheatre tucked in near the water, which caught me off guard — kind of random, but it works. A gentle way to wrap things up before heading home.Read more
