  • Arrived safely in Iceland!

    April 2 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 36 °F

Very smooth, uneventful flight to Reykjavik. Got in 1/2 hour early....which means 530am....or 130am on our biological clock. Let's see how we do today...on about 2.5 hours of sleep. We managed to get early check-in just before 8:00 a.m. And have a spectacular suite that we could entertain 15 people in and never bump into anyone. Right on the water magnificent location. We are going over to the Sky Lagoon that is in downtown at 10:30 this morning. The Sky Lagoon was really quite good....the lagoon was very warm, the outside air was very cold, and the sauna was incredibly QUIET. You SAW the waves but didn't HEAR ANYTHING.
A little siesta followed by a very cold walk around downtown Reykjavik. A stop at BBP hotdogs stand (and i had to try it, with crispy onions). Made famous by a stop over by Bill Clinton 25+ years ago The Puffin Shop. Cute little town. Before dinner had to sit by a fireplace until Candyce could feel her fingers😁 Our staff at the Edition called the weather Glugga Vedur, which translates to Window Weather.....nice to look at from INSIDE. Great way to celebrate our oldest's birthday. Happy birthday Daniel.

  • Iceland golden circle tour with Hawk

    April 3 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 34 °F

What a great day! Our guide, Hawk, was an extremely knowledgeable and friendly driver. We took in craters, geysers (which we found out are named for a place here in Iceland that is actually called Geysir and has now become synonymous with any pent-up hot water spring from the ground), waterfalls, greenhouses and more. The pictures explain some of this. By the way, thankfully, while it IS Cold outside, the wind was relatively calm and helped make it a manageable time for the entire day.... Even for the walk all the way around the crater. The tomato greenhouse was quite interesting, the bakery was magnificent, and overall it was just a fun time. Now I have to pick which pictures to include for today. Not an easy task. BTW, The photo of me straddling a deep trench is actually me straddling the Eurasia and American tectonic plates. It runs right through Iceland. Those two plates are moving away from each other and stretching Iceland out. Luckily it was slow enough that I didn't have to do the splits! HahahaRead more

  • Planes, Trains and Automobiles

    April 4 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Today was mostly a travel day! Very early start in Reykjavik, 5:00 a.m. pickup. Our flight and connection through Amsterdam was very uneventful, the best way to travel we got to the hotel around 5:00 p.m. Candyce took a cool picture of the shadow of our plane as we were preparing to land. When we arrived we just walked around for a little bit before grabbing a late bite to eat in the bistro right in our hotel. Our hotel name is The Baur Au Lac. It is an absolutely beautiful place. We walked around in downtown Zurich and just snapped a couple of pictures. We leave tomorrow for Lucerne.Read more

  • Lucerne Day 1

    April 5 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Absolutely gorgeous city... And the weather cooperated. Wooden (Chapel) Bridge and Lake Lucerne. Did a long walk for lunch and shopping, including the Laderach Chocolatier Swisse, the giant sandstone Lion Monument and fountains and architecture galore. Our room is an amazing 3 BR SUITE with a magnificent view of Lake Lucerne. The boat ride in the evening was also very nice. Basically went across the lake and then back,Read more

  • Lucerne Day 2: Pilatus Kulm

    April 6 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 39 °F

Fun and exhilarating trip to the peak of Mt Pilatus. Candyce then walked up and additional 200 steps. Lunch at the summit inside the Pilatus Hotel. Can only post 1/3 of the photos we each took. Lovely dinner at the Wilhelm Tell, a floating restaurant outside our hotel.Read more

  • Off to Interlaken

    April 7 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 34 °F

Staying at the Jungfrau Grand B+B. Another beautiful hotel. Immediately went to Harder Kulm, took the funicular up and got out to the edge. The highest point in Interlaken. Interlaken basically means Between Two Lakes The place is gorgeous and it is locked between two lakes and the Alps. Truly breathtaking beauty. Hang gliders abound and the weather has been heaven sent About 50-60 every day.Read more

  • Interlaken Day 2: My inner Spelunker

    April 8 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 43 °F

St. Beatus-Hohlen Cave in Interlaken is a very different "exploration" for us. The trip to the St. Beatus Cave was very hard work for this old man Extremely steep climb up, took about 1/2 hour. Explored the cave which gave us some great shots....and another bunch of steps in near darkness. But, all that aside, it was definitely worth it. Then walked back from the old downtown and at lunch at a quaint little sidewalk cafe. I had the schnitzel which was great and Can went with a club sandwich, which she labeled "the best I ever had". Great day in Interlaken.Read more

  • Off to Montreux, Switzerland

    April 9 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

Day begins with a ride on the Golden Pass Express, a 3.5 hour ride to Montreux from Interlaken. The ride took us through the Alps and NONE of the pictures do this train experience justice. Just remarkable. When we arrived in Montreaux, Lake Geneva greeted us and it is incredibly beautiful. Our hotel, The Royal Plaza, is right on the water and gives us incredible views and easy access down the sidewalk to the Freddy Mercury Statue, The Queen Studio Experience and multiple statues of famous folks who have called this slice of heaven “home”. Igor Stravinsky among others. My wife insisted we WALK to the hotel, despite the luggage, as it was only one mile. We're taking a cab back to the train station in the morning!! 🤐Read more

  • Next stop: Zermatt + The Matterhorn

    Apr 10–11 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

We travel first to Visp, and change trains to Zermatt. We only have 14 minutes but everyone says it is plenty of time....but they aren't dragging 150 pounds of luggage! Supposed to be quite chilly at the next stop but looking forward to seeing the Matterhorn.
The first part of our journey on the train to Visp took us through heavy industrial and agricultural areas, The first we've seen on the trip, all draped in a backdrop of the Swiss Alps . Zermatt is a beautiful little town ...very reminiscent of Aspen BIG ski destination. BTW, the Breitling Man is way too realistic and downright scary….and Candyce posing where she just bought the winning Swiss Lottery ticket. One final thought for today…we were winding down at the end of the day and decided to listen to a Guardians baseball game. I sent a text to great friend Tom Hamilton, the long time voice of the team. Hammy gave Candyce and I a shout out during the 2nd inning of their afternoon match’up. Quite fun to hear from 4,000 miles away.

  • Matterhorn Glacier Paradise+ Gornergrat

    April 11 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌙 34 °F

Busy day on tap with a Tram up to the top for Matterhorn and a train to the opposite side in an excursion they call Peak2Peak. The gondola ride up was quite amazing, and intense. I never gave much thought to the effects of the height. The photos will just not do it justice. We are at 3,840 m, 12,598 feet. Nearly 2.5 miles Mt. Blanc in France is very visible as is Matterhorn. The sheer numbers of skiers, at a slow time, is staggering. We even saw a helicopter rescue taking place in Gornergrat. Took me a while to get my "sky-legs" once up hereRead more

  • Glacier Express...all day train

    April 12 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 41 °F

The service is amazing and it is an 8-hour course of food....and we're not doing the wine pairings! It is a gourmet restaurant on RR tracks. And you never know what is outside the windows. The Furka tunnel was over 9 miles long through a mountain. A giant Dam in the middle of nowhere, and quaint town after quaint town. The Landwasser Viaduct was also a highlight. It is 65 meters high and 142 meters across the Landwasser River Valley. Apparently it is yet another UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built in 1901 and came near the end of the 8 hour trip. We both emerged in a food coma....
Upon arrival at our hotel most everything was already closed...but we walked around for a bit and took some beautiful pictures of the still frozan Lake Moritz and some really awesome architecture right near our Hauser Hotel.

  • Bernina Express to Tirano

    April 13 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 37 °F

Final sightseeing trip today to Tirano in Italy . I asked and they said we do not need our passports!! Looking like it may be BY FAR our worst weather day. Calling for rain and 34 degrees. At the top of the hill there is NO view and pictures are impossible. The Bernina Express opened 1910 and goes over highest point in Alps.
When we arrived in Tirano the weather was beautiful. No rain and much warmer. Only had time for a quick lunch and the turned right around and headed back to St. Moritz.

Wrapped up another amazing trip ....this one to Iceland and Switzerland. Weather was great, people were great, companion was the best.
