    Day 1

    Mar 9–12, 2025 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

    Türkiye geliyorum!
I have been learning Turkish as part of my MA in linguistics since October 2023. Why Turkish? My partner's mum is Turkish and I wanted to speak her language. Turkish is the second most commonly spoken language in Germany after German, so there are plenty of speakers around. After 3 Turkish exams and 3 semesters of studying, it's finally time I visit the country where the language is spoken. Not on my own, my parents will meet me from the UK and join me tomorrow. I am eager to see if I understand much and if people understand me!

Set off from Erfurt Weimar Airport one day earlier than expected, since my flight from Berlin on Monday got cancelled due to trade union strikes. Very lucky I had finished my term paper, a coursebook analysis of teaching Turkish speech acts, of course, and was able to leave a day earlier, from my local airport 10 minutes up the road, the only flight that took off today!

  • Arrived!

    March 9, 2025 in Turkey ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

After working out the tram, I headed to our hotel for the night. Checked in at 8:00, then straight off out into the night to grab some dinner.

I had some Pide, a pizza like bake which I knew from Germany. It was the simplest thing to order, especially in a mall food court, with plenty of pictures... hopefully I'll be more adventurous tomorrow. Managed a few basic conversations.

Highlight was hearing the muezzin call to prayer, the adhan, when I arrived. Was less of a highlight when I heard it in the early hours of the morning, but still exciting to be in the thick of it!

  • Antalya

    March 10, 2025 in Turkey ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Today I had a half day to myself to acclimatize, which consisted of checking out the old town and eating and drinking at several different places.

Mum and dad arrived from East Midlands Airport at 17:00 and then we went out for an early dinner, so early, the cook was still at home eating after his Ramazan fast, but the waiter was able to warm us up lentil soup and vine leaves - Mercimek Çorbasi, Sarma, and menemen (scrambled eggs) for mum.

After that we had a Künefe each for pudding, early night now since mum and dad have been up since 5am.

  • Demre

    Mar 12–13, 2025 in Turkey ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Set off from Antalya at 11, after a free Turkish coffee and waiting for the bus, leaving the bus stop and then catching a bus by waving at the driver from the traffic lights, who then pulled over to stop for us! We got to Demre at 14:30.

Then checked out the Helenstic ruins at Myra, followed by a beach dinner from the supermarket and a çay.

  • Patara via Kaş

    March 13, 2025 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Two bus trips along the coast to stay nearby Patara ruins.

A dip in the sea for Zoe and a run for Dave.

Amazing dinner including Çipura, sea bream, in our hotel!

  • Ölüdeniz

    Mar 15–17, 2025 in Turkey ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

After breakfast we travelled via bus to Fethiye, where we caught a bus up to Ölüdeniz, the start of the Lycian way, not really open for the season yet, but managed to find a hotel.

Set off around 14:00 on a short 10km hike over to Kayaköy and then back to Ölüdeniz beach, a deserted village after the 6,500 Greek Christians (a minority during the Ottoman empire) were forced to leave between 1918-1923. Very eerie.

Bus back up the hill to a pub full of English people (oh no) watching premier league football. Nice food and beer, though!

  • Likya Yolu / Baba dağ

    March 16, 2025 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Two separate adventures today: Dave went up Baba Dağ while Sal and Zoe hiked the start of the Lycian way and then down to the beach for a swim (for Zoe). We had initially planned to do full days with bags, but unfortunately Sal's bronchitis isn't healed enough. Plus day hikes are more relaxing with less gear!

Definitely the most touristy place we've been so far, on to new pastures tomorrow.

  • To Datça peninsula

    March 17, 2025 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Wanted to spend more time on coast, somewhere quieter so got a 2h dolmus to Marmaris and further 75 mins to Datça, which we knew about from Zoe's partner's mum.

A more Greek vibe here, with plenty of white houses and a sleepy harbour.

Dinner on the beach, the most pricey yet, but worth it!
