    Apr 14–24, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Getting used to time zone and enjoying the culture and cuisine. We start the camino Ingles on good Friday. The 7 day pilgrimage finished 80ish miles later in santiago de compostela.

  • Neda day 1

    Apr 18–19, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Good thing it was a shorter walk today as it rained pretty hard. Feet and legs got pretty wet. Walk was beautiful, through trees, paths and farms. We stayed close to the bay. Highlight was baby donkeys and our homemade sandwiches. Stopped at a picturesque old church and monastery. Also oldest magnolia in Spain. Arrived at our beautiful hotel with a view of the bay. Nice pool but too bad it's cold.Read more

  • Pontedueme day 2

    April 19, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

9+ mile walk through trees, rural neighborhoods, and lovely views. The wind and rain followed us for most of the day but we were better prepared. I put plastic bags on my feet and my feet were dry when we arrived at our room. Only got lost once, for a moment, but was quickly rescued by a lovely woman who saw us veer off track. The final km was treacherous having to fight the wind and rain. I thought Mary was going to fly off the bridge. Was looking forward to using the dryer in our Albergue but it seems to be missing.Read more

  • Day 3 Betanzos

    April 20, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Well today was supposed to be our shortest day but it turned out to be the longest. I made a booking error and booked a room in the wrong city. Betanzos is pretty big so we were able to find a nice place here but it took an additional 2 1/2 hours of walking. The good news, tomorrow will be short.
Today we walked 13 miles with some really long steep climbs. The first half of the day was pretty wet. The whole walk was beautiful and the people so friendly.
Oh, and i lost my glasses.
Scored. Found an evening Easter service at Iglesia Santa Domingo. A blessing we had to walk to Betanzos.

  • Day 4 - Beche

    April 21, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

10.75 miles all up hill.... at least it seemed that way. God blessed us with amazing weather. Almost too hot at times. Enough mud to remind us we were in Galacia though. We passed the half way point today. That's bittersweet.
So green, lots of spring flowers and baby farm animals. Mary says we're God's favorites.
We are staying at an eco-cabin that is gorgeous. Unfortunately, there are no food services to be found. We were extremely lucky to have found that out at our lunch stop so we packed sandwiches. Para levar.
At this moment we are sitting on the porch with a glass of wine looking out at the lake.
    Tomorrow will come quick.

  • Day 5 - A Rua

    April 22, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Today's distance was short, 8.5 miles, but seemed really long. I guess because we didn't start until almost 11:30. Last night's lodging was so nice we didn't leave until 11, then took at warm-up lap around the lake, before we pried ourselves away.
Today was short sleeve weather. It was sunny all day and we walked through so many different terrains. Of course, it started with a long up hill climb.
Our first stop was Cafe Avelina. Avelina, the owner is so kind and personable we hated to leave. She makes delicious sandwiches, coffee and snacks. Lots of smiles, hugs and photos. Along the way we passed a mink farm. Didn't know they existed.
We met pilgrims from Scotland, Portugal, Hawaii and Ohio.
We stopped at an open air museum with a dinosaur. Finally making it to our apartment by 5. Picked a winner.

  • Day 6 Sgueiro - 10.8 miles

    April 23, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Beautiful day for a walk. It was cooler than expected, even a little drizzle, but it warmed up to the low 60's and was perfect. As advertised, shorts weather.
Started at 10:15, early for us. Only one refreshment stop on our route today. So we brought leftovers from last night, a delicious spanish tortilla (omelet with potatoes). More level today, we walked through trees, hamlets, and small farms. So pretty. Lots of chickens, cows and horses too.
Met a man from Utah that has been in Europe for 40 years. Also met pilgrims from Boston and Sicily. Probably others too as we're staying in albergue (dormatory). A very nice Albergue. Sleeps 24. Seems almost new. Really nice bathrooms, showers, washer/dryer and buffet breakfast. Hopefully no snorers other than us. I also expect everyone to sleep until 9.

  • Day 7 - Santiago de Compestela

    April 24, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    9.9 miles
    What an amazing finish.
Woke up earlier than usual. Dorm-mates actually set alarms...6:45am! And had the gall to hit snooze... who does that? Okay, so I went back to sleep and was awakened by my lovely travel partner at 8:15. Overall the albergue was a 10. Would stay again.
    On the road at 9:10.
Such a beautiful day. It hit 80 degees. More lovely winding country roads, farms, trees, flowers, birds singing and the real Enchanted Forest. But the pinnacle of my camino was when an Italian perrigrina asked me why I learned Italian. Learned!?
The walk today was fairly level, not difficult, but magical. Sorry if I'm being a little sentimental or emotional. But seeing the distance markers tick down was a little sad. I wanted to finish but i didn't want it to end. Finally waking into the cathedral plaza was as special as I hoped. So many people smiling, crying, hugging and just taking it all in. People offering to take our picture and asking us to take theirs. Everyone is experiencing the same euphoria. Will there be another in my future? Not sure. I'll have some final thoughts tomorrow and stop the daily posting until we get to the convent.
