    The Gocta Waterfall in Peru, is one of the tallest waterfalls in the world. This 771 m waterfall has just two drops, and the powerful free-fall from the second drop is among the tallest in the world.

    Chimborazo 🧗

    Christian was supposed to lead me to the peak of Chimborazo. He belongs to the kind of young experiences extreme sport guides.

    The agency dropped us at the parking lot somewhere around 4900 meters above sea level. We then had a 2 hour ascent to the Campo Alto which lays at 5300m.s.n.m. Two guys helped to carry some mountaineering gear up to the Campo Alto where we then set up the tent. While the two helpers went back to Riobamba, Christian and I cooked some instant noodles and afterwards took a 5 hour rest.

    At midnight we got out of our warm sleeping bags into the boots mounted with crampons. Harness and rope were assembled and we started to hike direction summit.

    To a greater or lesser extent of 2 hours, we reached a steep passage. Christian pecked a hole into the snow and appraised the different layers. The entire time since we left the Camp I was breathing harder than ever before. The fact that I was exhausted and that he didn’t want to risk his life we decided to turn around and go back to the High-camp. He explained me in many different ways why we wouldn’t summit. I certainly started to annoy him with my permanent questioning and sure thing I could see it too, the snow layers were very fragile. A huge harder middle layer was the reason we couldn’t go further. Safety first, high risk of avalanches, too much fresh fallen snow on top of the old one layers.

    Fudging, fudging, fudging moment. I just burnt a half month budget at a two day Chimborazo trip, without summiting it. ¡Carajo!

    Maybe no new record made here. Bolivia - Huayna Potosí: 5646m.

    Ecuador - Chimborazo: 5644m...

    Otavalo

    Once again a memorable moment on my trip through Latinoamerica. More and more I start to question this application. I took so many beautiful photos in Otavalo but I’m limited to 6 photos and one video. Nevertheless let’s share a little story.

    When I arrived in Otavalo I went straight to the hostel Flying Donkey. The owner of the hostel told me there are two French people in the first floor. If I am interested in some Lagunas, I shall ask the guys if I can join their trip tomorrow.
    In the kitchen area I encountered Clément from Paris. I right away asked him about his plans for tomorrow. He told me that he met another Frenchman just here in this Hostel. To make life easier for me the other guy had the same name, Clément from the Normandy, close to Mont Saint-Michel. Both Clément’s wanted to visit the Lagunas del Mojanda and hike to the peak Fuya Fuya.

    We got up early on the next day, after some bananas and a coffee we took the taxi to the Lagunas. In 3 hours we hiked up Fuya Fuya and then back to the Laguna. After we returned to Otavalo we ate some lunch and decided to visit another famous Laguna called Cuicocha. We took a bus to a small village and from there a taxi to the Laguna, spent half an hour there and returned to a village where we entered a bus to another village and after a short walk there a final bus to Otavalo.

    On the next day the Clément’s were already gone, I decided to go to Tulcan but there was still a nice waterfall to visit in Otavalo. So I walked to the waterfall took a bazillion photos and returned to the city center where I grabbed my stuff and headed towards the main street to catch a bus to Tulcan.    Leia mais

    Tulcan

    A freezing night in Tulcan and the day after, a visit of the local cemetery, which is the most incredible cemetery on earth. I crossed the border to Colombia at midday.

    Crossing the border was pretty much a piece of cake, a walk in the park, a picnic in the garden, smooth sailing.

    I only had to take a taxi to the shortcut place. From there I hopped on a motorbike taxi and we drove approximately 5km to another place near the Colombian city Ipiales. I crossed a bridge and walked up a hill to Ipiales, when a milkman with his little truck stoped in front of me. I then had a lift to the city.    Leia mais

    Las Lajas

    Straight to Las Lajas, just in case the police will catch me and send me back to Ecuador. But frankly speaking I wasn’t really nervous. Since I left Tulcan in Ecuador, the whole border crossing procedure went swimmingly.

    Las Lajas has this one Basilica which made this place one of the most famous spots in Colombia. It took 33 years to build this National Shrine Basilica. It certainly is a feast for for the eyes.    Leia mais

    Stuck in the south. After I returned from Ipiales I found myself waiting among dozens of others in the terminal station of Ipiales. Luckily the town was small and therefore clearly arranged. Nevertheless at night you shouldn’t stay close to the terminal station, like everywhere in Colombia the dark hours are dedicated to the crackheads and tea leaves. 😊

    Two girls helped me out of the danger zone and we spent two nights in town before we finally found a transportation to the next bigger city in the north.    Leia mais

    Pasto

    Once we arrived in Pasto, i knew what i had to do. Since half of the Courtney has a strict national strike of transportation, I was forced to buy a plane ticket to move on. Hence I needed to go to the migration office to get a legal status of traveling in Colombia. Option one was to pay a fine (sanción económica) and afterwards to issue a Salvoconducto which is a permission to stay in Colombia up to 30 days. Second option is a deportation which is free of charge but comes with a lot of drawbacks such as blacklisted for one year and for each time I’d visit Colombia I would have to get a visa.

    I chose to pay the fine and to stay in Pasto until the office has processed all the paperwork. I learned some new Spanish words like multa and cita and I for the first time vitnessed how violent protests on the streets were befallen.    Leia mais

    Bogotá

    I had to draw a deduction according to which place I’ll be able to visit in the next 30 days due to my validation paper. First I knew it’s best to take the cheapest flight possible out of Pasto, which meant to fly to Bogotá.

    I already had a rough itinerary in mind. Bogota doesn’t offer that much, so it would be preferable to visit the Cathedral de Sal in a village north of the capital.
    Afterwards I should make my way to Medellín and visit the nearby attraction Piedra de Peñol. Once done that I could either continue to the pacific coast to watch some whales or go up north to the Caribbean coast where all the touristy places are.

    However, first things first, I spent some relaxing nights in Bogotá’s city center La Candelaria did a say trip to the Cathedral de Sal in Zipaquirá and hiked up to the famous hill Monserrate which is the main tourist attraction in Bogota.    Leia mais

    Medellín

    17 dollars was taken by Viva Colombia airline to fly from Bogotá to Medellín. Even there are not much blockades in the countryside it’s still not guaranteed to make it from one place to another overland.

    I spent one night in la Zona Rosa in the south. A neighborhood where one can find all the fancy restaurants and nightlife activities. The next day I booked a night in Guatapé a village east of Medellin, close to the Piedra de Peñol.

    Once I was back in Medellín I found a comfortable, affordable private room just next to the smaller airport in the city center. On the next morning I went to this airport to take my next flight into my next adventures journey.    Leia mais

    So far from civilization is a little village at the pacific coast where one can watch whales passing by. Whale season is about July and August but the first whales arrive end of May.

    I was still too early to see them though. The few whales who were already out there didn’t tell me where they were.

    I spent 5 days in this crazy little village full of African American people. All tall, slim and strong.    Leia mais

    A mud volcano somewhere in nowhere.

    El volcán del Totumo es un cono volcánico lleno de lodo. La formación presenta una escasa elevación (aproximadamente de veinte metros) para llegar a su cráter es preciso ascender por una rústica escalera de madera.

    Palomino

    Unfortunately I couldn’t stop at Parque Tayrona due to a 15 day clahutdown of the park.

    Palomino is a little pueblito East of Santa Marta at the Caribbean coast. It is dominated by French tourists. If you are looking to relax and chill at the beach for a while Palomino is the best place to do so. Santa Marta and Cartagena are both big towns with packed beaches (and tourist prices). Where as Palomino is much smaller and less crowded.

    Santuario los Flamencos

    It was early in the morning at the agency in Palomino. I was waiting for my motorbike taxi driver while I quickly left the agency to my a coffee.
    I encountered my driver at the coffee place. I offered him an Empenada and then we got ready for an one hour 20 minutes ride to the Flamingos sanctuary.

    Once we arrived there he told me to wait me here while I am on the Laguna observing the almost one thousand flamingos.

    I paid the boat trip and when I was back on land my driver asked me if I want to relax at the beach. I told him I’ll walk around and take photos of the birdlife.

    He went back to his roost to take a nap. I on the other hand discovered the area and took tones of photos. Around 10 in the morning I was ready to go back to Palomino. The taxi driver asked me if we should eat some lunch since it’s part of the trip. Too early though. I wasn’t hungry I calmed him down and role him to offer a nice juice on the way back to Palomino.

    After we drunk some delicious juice with a local fruit we arrived at the agency. The agency wanted to charge 40 us$ for the trip. I told them I will pay the driver 10 dollars and nothing else. Since the agency only organized my driver I didn’t see why they should get 40 bucks for a phone call.

    After a long fight I paid this scumbags 20 dollars and went back to my hostel.

    At night universe counterbalanced this inequity by sending me a beautiful young lady from heaven. Erika tried to cut line on a kiosk where I was just on the way to order a cold beer. We started talking, chatting, flirting and soon after that we decided to spend some days together.    Leia mais
