  • Castleton

    14 novembre 2021, Angleterre ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

We packed up bright and early (for us) and set off southwards, skirting Leeds on the south west side to hit the M1. Turning off at Sheffield we drove through the centre to emerge into the Derbyshire Dales. We had booked the Castleton CAMC campsite for three nights so we could do a walk in the countryside up to Mam Tor.
On our way we detoured to Eyam to the south of the site to visit the museum and to have a look at the village. The village famously shut itself off from the outside world in 1665/6 as it was hit by The Great Plague which had travelled to the village in a delivery of cloth from London.
The museum told the story of the self imposed lockdown of the village ( to prevent the spread of the disease to neighbouring villages.) The story was further illustrated by information boards within the various cottage gardens in the village hit by the plague. All very interesting, and having experienced the past 18 months of living in a world where covid is ever present it all seemed so pertinent.
On Monday we walked a circular route from the site to Mam Tor, taking in Lose Hill first, which rises immediately behind the campsite. We then walked along the ridge via Hollins Cross to the the Tor. There were a lot of walking groups out on a fairly overcast day, through it all we had great views of Edale and across the valley to Kinder Scout. We returned via Castleton Village down some pretty slippy and steep paths off the high ground. Castleton was preparing itself for Christmas with trees being decorated outside all the shops which mostly comprised of jewellers specialising in Blue John stone, which is extracted from the surrounding cave systems.
On Tuesday we cycled into Hathersage where we had booked ourselves into the local pharmacy for our Covid booster jabs

  • Yeadon

    11 novembre 2021, Angleterre ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

We travelled south a few miles to Yeadon near the Leeds/Liverpool canal where we based ourselves at Warm Lane Farm CL site, high above the Aire valley below. Upon arrival we walked up into the town centre to have a look and to empty the charity shop bookshelves of pulp fiction.
The following day we took the bikes off the back of the van and cruised down the hill to the valley bottom then cycled along the Leeds/Liverpool canal to Saltaire - a Victorian model village built by Sir Titus Salt to house his mill factories and workforce. The canal was quite beautiful with all the trees in their autumn colours. We arrived at Saltaire in drizzle and locked up the bikes - the Salt Mill was enormous and straddled the canal with a bridge. A was hoping to see some of the history of the place laid out, to describe what must have been an amazing place in its heyday, but there was none of that. The buildings are still in use today, repurposed for galleries, retail and food in part and a lot of offices, the housing associated with the original site still occupied by families and all this preserved under an Unesco World heritage status. Having looked forward to seeing the place for some years we were underwhelmed by the lack of historical context, however the galleries housed a good selection of David Hockney paintings.
We completed a walk around the parkland and woods to the north of the site and by the Shipley Glen tram way then returned to our site in the drizzle. The long drag up the hill to Yeadon tested the legs.
On Saturday we walked over the hills to Otley where there was a decent market in the lovely town. We returned to Yeadon by the bus to escape the very sharp climb through woods on slippy paths that we had to scramble down on our way in.

  • Crakehall

    9 novembre 2021, Angleterre ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We spent a couple of nights at Greengate Farm so we could say Hi to Stella on the site we spent 16 weeks on during the first lock down.
We arrived at noon and were soon greeted by Stella for a good catch up. The site had been very busy since it reopened after the first lockdown.
We wandered into Bedale in the afternoon hoping to fine some of the country crunch flour at the local bakery - but sadly they had sold out.
The following day, after a lazy start we went hiking in the area and picked a new route to us which took us along the High Land ridge to the south of Crakehall. The weather was perfect and we managed to tread some of our well worn paths from our previous visit.

  • Redcar

    6 novembre 2021, Angleterre ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

We spent thee days at Howla Hay Farm CL site near Guisborough so we could meet up with Karen's family in the north east. Kirsty and Matt came up on Saturday from Chepstow to join the visit - their plan to stop of in Howarth on Friday having been curtailed due to a positive covid test by their host.
We met up at Roseberry road for a lunch of sandwiches and cream cakes (good old Morrisons) and enjoyed a good natter in the afternoon.
In the evening we all reconvened at Charltons at K and M's airbnb for a quick drink prior to us all enjoying an evening meal at Tocketts Mill.
Kirst and Matt returned to Chepstow on Sunday morning, dropping us off at Howla Hay Farm in the morning. In the afternoon we walked over the hills beside Upleatham into Redcar to spend the afternoon with Margaret and Donald.
Donald ran us back to the site in early evening.
On Monday we drove over to Redcar late morning and went on a trip into Darlington where we browsed the shops for a while before falling into The Wynd Cafe for a light lunch. Karen found some fabric she was looking for in the local sewing shop.
We returned to the site in the dark which was exciting on the slippy grass.

  • Elescar

    5 novembre 2021, Angleterre ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

We visited the heritage centre in the old iron works and foundries which were built by the owners of Wentworth Woodhouse which is situated three miles to the south. Elescar was the hub of the industrial empire owned by the family - the heritage centre has the only Newcomen beam engine still in place at its original location and it has been restored by local volunteers.
The Heritage Centre offered a small but interesting museum and the usual array of gift shops etc.. After a good browse we pitched off down to Wentworth Woodhouse where we had booked a visit.
The house is truly enormous - 365 rooms - which housed a family of 6 to 8 at peak with up 40 servants and 60 more gardeners, liverymen, footmen etc etc..
We had a wander around the gardens, which contained the usual array of follies and temples followed by a visit to the interior of the house. We only saw a few rooms but those we did see were very ornate with no expense spared.
We returned to Elescar where we free camped off road with fire works night celebrations visible around us.

  • Wortley Hall

    4 novembre 2021, Angleterre ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

We set off northward with smiles on our faces once again. We were heading for Redcar to meet with Karen's parents but had decided to stop of near Wentworth Woodhouse on our way. we had both read about the history of this enormous property and its inhabitants in the book "Black Diamonds" and were keen to see the house for ourselves.
We stayed at Wortley Hall CL site for the first night and enjoyed a short walk around the gardens. Never seen so many ducks on such a small pond, a wedding was being celebrated in the hotel whilst we were there.
The old hall building is in the heart of the old coal mining area in this part of Yorkshire. The colours in the autumn trees were wonderful.

  • South Wonston

    23 septembre 2021, Angleterre ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We returned to SW for to be there to remind the agents to sell our house. We used SW as a base for the next few weeks. Having sustained some damage by a hit and run driver to the rear of Chloe in the car park of a supermarket we decided that we should bring forward our plans to buy a little run around car for the time being. Thankfully a witness to the hit and run gave us details of the driver so we started the process of claiming for the repairs which had to be done through our insurance company. Even though an offense had been committed the police were not interested.
We took the van to Sewardstone for the weekend of the 24th September to look after Magnus, Jemima and Mary while Stew and Em snuck off to celebrate Em's birthday. Grand parents had a great time and we returned to SW on 27th to receive an acceptable offer for our house.
On the first weekend in October we had the family over for a visit. Stew, Em and their three all came down and we were joined by Kirsty and Matt. Meg got a taxi over from Sidmouth so we all enjoyed a great weekend. We opened a very large bottle of champers to celebrate all being together at last.
On the Tuesday we drove to near Reading to look at and buy a little run around, a Kia Picanto, which was delivered to SW the following day.
The weekend of the 15th saw K go to South Wales with Debbie to enjoy a girls weekend with Maria at Cowbridge.
On 23rd - October half term we returned to London to help Stew and Em with childcare. We all had a great time once again, on the Monday with Magnus at the school garden and then with the girls too at the local parks.
Magnus has been practising hard with the piano and gave us a recital in the evening, introduced by Jemima. We all visited the London Docklands Museum at East India Dock which was very interesting and we enjoyed a brilliant talk about locks, cranes and levers by the museum curator.
We prepared pumpkin lanterns for halloween after which the children enjoyed making pumpkin fairy cakes too.
W returned to SW for a few days - Karen shot off to a Spa in Cheltenham to have a girlie couple of days with Kirsty and A prepared the van for short trip up north.

  • Aberaeron

    20 septembre 2021, Pays de Galles ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We all left Porthmadog to travel down to Averaeron, where we were to spend two nights on a site which M and R enjoy - Camping on the Farm.
We followed the A470 to Dolgellau then the beautiful coast road through Tywyn and back to Machynlleth where we left the official Snowdonia 360 route.
We looked into Aberystwyth for a couple of hours in the afternoon which is a very elegant town with a shingle beach and old ruins of a castle. Also plenty of interesting shops to look around. M and R could not resist treating us to an ice cream which was very nice.
After setting up on site in the evening we enjoyed a charcoal bbq in the evening sunshine. Bella enjoyed the freedom and raced around the site chasing balls with great abandon.
On Tuesday we all wandered into the town of Aberaeron which is a really delightful little town built around a port. All the houses around the village centre are painted in pastel shades, and it is very pretty. We were hoping to get a table to enjoy lunch outside but left it too late and settled for a sit down fish and chip lunch instead - we were not disappointed. The fish was excellent and the service very good.
We thoroughly enjoyed our three weeks of travel around some of the Snowdonia 360. The weather was truly wonderful and the views along the route breathtaking. Climbing Snowdon completed Alan's set of the three summits of the mainland. Karen needs to complete Ben Nevis so watch this space.
At some point we will complete the parts of Wales 360 that we did not have chance to see, as we were told by many people that the Llyn peninsula and Anglesey are very pretty and definitely worth visiting. We were surprised at how busy most places were, as we were outside of main holiday season. Some campsites that we tried to get into were completely full, but we always managed to find somewhere to stay.

  • Porthmadog

    17 septembre 2021, Pays de Galles ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Moving on to Porthmadog we booked ourselves into the Tyddyn Llywn campsite for three nights. Mad and Richard, Matt's parents, were coming to join us for the second and third nights.
Settling down early afternoon we wandered into town for a look at the shops. The place was quite busy and very much visitor orientated.
On Saturday we returned to the town in the morning to get the Saturday paper and returned to the campsite via the Wales coast path to have a quick look at Borth y Gest and a little beyond. Borth y Gest is a nice village on the sea front with a wide sandy bay.
We arrived to see M and R had just arrived so we all enjoyed a tea and cake prior to the fizz being opened. We got the cadac bbq out for the first time in a while and all enjoyed an evening meal in the evening sun. The sky was turning a beautiful red as the sun went down. In the evening we all watched Strictly come Dancing indoors, ready to appreciate the warmth of the van once the sun went down and we started to feel a chill in the air.
On Sunday we all wandered back into Porthmadog where we left M and R to mooch whilst we walked across the cobb to follow the coast path as far as Portmeirion.
Karen produced another wonderful Sunday roast which we all enjoyed in the evening sunshine. Kirsty and Matt had emailed us the link to the wedding video, which we all watched on the laptop after the sun went down. It reminded us all of the Happy day and was much enjoyed by all.

  • Harlech

    16 septembre 2021, Pays de Galles ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Slate quarries aside, with very little to look at in BF we took the van out to visit Harlech with its imposing castle high on a hill overlooking the sea.
We parked up in the car park next to the beach under the castle in glorious sunshine and wandered up to the castle which is another of Edward 1st creations. Quite a place too with great views around the surrounding countryside.
Harlech had a bit more to offer than BF and after a little mooch in the town we returned to drop our bags off at the van before heading to the beach for a wander along the sands. A few people were enjoying the surf in lovely afternoon sunshine. Karen went for a paddle whilst I gallantly held her shoes.
