Ready to Fly

The day is finally here. Last night I felt a bit like a human canon ball ready to be launched into this fast paced adventure which doesn't end now until 16th August. Currently sat in Club World (thank you BA family) with bubbles and a great line up of films - Jackie, Moana and Passengers to start. Thank you to everyone that's encouraged me to take this journey. I hope you enjoy the updates. The adventure begins...もっと詳しく

Deja Vu

Just as we were taxiing out at Heathrow, I glimpsed out the corner of my eye a familiar white pointy nosed bird looking a little sad and rusty these days. She was none other than G-BOAB who I had the great honour of flying on in 1999 on my last trip to NYC with Mum and Dad. Sadly I wasn't quick enough to snap a picture. Nice of her to be there to wave me off!
The cheeky upgrade was wondrous and BA treated me like royalty. Having had the good fortune to last experience this when I was 14, it was a real treat to re-experience it as an adult who could more thoroughly appreciate it!
Things have moved on a little since '99. Rather than a list of miniature VHS tapes, I had over 132 films to choose from! Sorry, I've not flown long haul in a long while so this was a novelty to me! Despite my earlier choices I actually only made it through Jackie and A Monster Calls. Both phenomenal in their own ways. Mum - it's not nearly as squeamish as IMDB reported. I think you could handle it! With a full sleeper seat, I couldn't resist the nap time so Moana and Passengers will have to wait.
An older couple next to me could have been Mum and Dad 15 years from now. She was happily enjoying the luxuries and sat watching a film. He was a fidget and kept interrupting her film to tell her interesting facts about the flight from the flight information screen. When I smirked at her final telling off for interrupting her screening of La La Land he said to me 'YOU find it interesting that we're exactly half way don't you?'. Of course I agreed. It was interesting and I logged into my own flight information screen to record it.もっと詳しく

We're here!

After an amazingly smooth journey and reuniting with my wonderful travel companion Kate (different flights, different terminals, long story) we set off in search of our first Air BnB. We defied the sassy transport rep at the airport who was doubtful about our abilities to 'work the subway' and found our destination within about an hour of leaving the airport with NO getting lost! Result! Our pad for the next 3 nights is perfect and we could not have nicer hosts. Check it out at http://abnb.me/EVmg/tUyxMZt3nE.
After a spot of unpacking, de-planeifying and catching up with the world back home, we set off in search of the Brooklyn Bridge (7 mins walk according to Google). Needless to say despite its enormity, we meandered a bit here and there (blame the fire station and ice cream van) but ultimately ended up down at the river bank admiring the Manhattan skyline and the beautiful bridge.
Somehow despite the 4am start, we've managed to stay up until nearly 10pm NY time in an attempt to defeat jetlag which means we've been up almost a full 24 hours.
Goodnight Y'all xもっと詳しく

Hitting the town

To help combat the jetlag and recover from our journey we had a fairly leisurely start to the day. We began by embarking across the Brooklyn Bridge - a truly wonderful experience and one I'd highly recommend to anyone visiting NYC.
From there we headed to Ground Zero. This was particularly odd for me as my last visit to Manhattan was pre-9/11. Somehow the footprint sized fountains seemed smaller than I imagined yet still incredibly haunting. Kate informed me that on every victim's birthday a white rose is placed on their name. Perversely the first two names we came across with this touching commemorative gesture were Jacqueline and Barbara - the names of our Mothers. If we weren't already feeling morose - we were now!
On to Battery Park and to the oft-mentioned Staten Island Ferry - NYCs FREE ferry ride which gives a fabulous view of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Meanwhile, I am humming Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack tunes as I think about our planned visit to the Empire State Building at night.
Once back in Battery Park, Kate happily let me indulge in a beautiful carousel ride - see pictures! Easily one of the magical highlights of the day. Needless to say we were not the only adults on it!
Having already walked over 10,000 steps it was time to hit the subway down to Central Park (near Bow Bridge) for a bit of exploring and dinner at Shake Shack. I smirked at the incomprehensible subway announcements as referenced in various film and TV shows. The heat by this point was a little too much to bear and the cold delicious milkshakes were much appreciated. We meandered slowly towards Fifth Avenue and Times Square. En route we stopped in McGee's- the Irish bar that supposedly inspired McLarens in sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Needless to say as with most film set inspirations - I was not overly impressed.
Times Square was typically busy. We explored the Hershey's store and Disney - what ever happened to Hershey 'Hugs'?! I'm not just imagining them am I? They did exist?
After the severe attack on the senses that Times Square brought us and the attack of jetlag and heat exhaustion we opted to hunt down Serendipity - a charming little cafe around the corner from 'BLOOMIES'. This was a film location which exceeded expectations and I thoroughly recommend it. The frozen hot chocolate (their speciality) was delicious and the decor and service very charming.
From there, it was time for home. Needless to say this took longer than hoped due to a couple of subway errors but thankfully friendly people along the way helped us to find our way back to our cosy Brooklyn pad.
Tomorrow I am going on a bit of a Norah Ephron pilgrimage and I can't wait. #ohmydreamsitsneverquiteasitseemsもっと詳しく

Searching for Nora Ephron

Those of you that know me well, will know that the Hollywood screenwriter and director Nora Ephron is a bit of a heroine of mine. My BA dissertation was entitled 'Hollywood Gave Me Unrealistic Expectations about Love' and this analysed films such as Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally in great detail. Ultimately I was asking how big a commodity was love to the film industry and how important was it to sell a fairytale happily ever after as a belief system. Anyway, before I rewrite my dissertation, today spontaneously became a rather moving Ephron pilgrimage to which I visited a fair share of Manhattan film locations where the 'magic' occurred. Thank you to the following blog and associated Google map - very little research was required - https://www.goodfoodstories.com/nora-ephron-new…
I won't bore you with every little detail - those that know the films will recognise the spots from the pictures. I've provided the film stills to accompany them to aid you anyway. Needless to say, I was in my element. The 91st Street Garden really moved me. It was such a beautiful little place and as enchanting as it appeared in the film. If you weren't already disgusted at my level of fandom here - I did also have the respective soundtracks to listen to whilst I walked along the various avenues in search of Tom.
Aside from my pilgrimage, I did find myself in some other very interesting places today. Tiffany's is always a wonder to behold. Beware anywhere that doesn't have a price tag. I thoroughly enjoyed carefully choosing my engagement ring. Nothing too fancy or large. I'll worry about choosing the right man later! I also happened across the Lego Store which after recently visiting the new London store was quite underwhelming but provided good photo ops for Lego Joey all the same. I also encountered a dinosaur made of over 400 handbags. Mum, I'm finally on to you and now understand why you're still collecting them! Whilst in the area, I took it upon myself to visit the 'Top of the Rock' and I was not in the least bit disappointed.
In true Ephron style, Kate and I reunited at the Empire State Building and after watching the sunset and seeing the city in all its night-time glory, wearily we travelled home via the subway.もっと詳しく

Exploring Brooklyn

After two jam-packed days of sightseeing in Manhattan we decided to have a more relaxed day exploring Brooklyn today - especially in light of our first Amtrak train journey that evening. Our Air BnB hosts were happy for us to leave our suitcases there until the afternoon which gave us extra flexibility (somehow our cases have gotten heavier - I swear I did NOT buy anything on fifth avenue!)
Initially we headed to Brooklyn Heights Promenade- only 15 minutes walk from where we were staying for some spectacular photos of the skyline and Brooklyn Bridge. From there we caught the subway to Coney Island. I have always been curious and it did not disappoint. It was like a hotter, happier and more colourful version of the Blackpool Pleasure Beach (which I LOVE by the way so don't mistake any disdain).
We only had just over an hour to experience the seaside resort and so after a trip on the ferris wheel, a quick rollercoaster ride and a brief sit on the beach and A LOT of photo taking (yet again in my element) we hopped back onto the subway to pick up our cases and continue on our adventure.もっと詳しく

From Brooklyn to Boston

1st train journey down, 4 more to go in our #jkrailing adventures across the USA. This first journey took us from New York Pennsylvania Station to Boston Back Bay on the North East Regional line. It took almost exactly 4 hours and was really beautiful especially as we were travelling in 'golden hour'. As I can only post one video and no pictures per 'footprint' I wanted to share our farewell to the NYC skyline.もっと詳しく

Travelling North

The train was very comfortable and came with free WIFI! I know, I know we should be looking out of the window and we did but even the trains in the UK don't have free WIFI!
The journey took us through New Haven, New London and Providence and had a decent coastal stretch. We saw numerous beautiful coastal and riverside mansions straight out of a Nicholas Sparks movie as well as boats, seals and birdlife. I only wish we'd been going a little slower! Before reaching Massachusetts, we crossed two other state lines so travelled through Connecticut and Rhode Island. Back when we were planning our itinerary I wrote a list of the number of states we would hit on our journey. On one of our longer journeys, I'll list it out for you. It's long but mildly disappointing!
We arrived on time and grabbed a cab to our Air BnB. I was mildly put out that we were expected to tip the when in fact I had acted as navigator with Google maps! Regardless, we arrived in East Boston safely and were greeted by our new Air BnB hosts. Our new pad is lovely and the hosts lovelier still. Nothing is too much trouble for them. When I left the room, I returned to find a cool bag hung on the door containing our breakfast - yoghurts, muffins, cherries and cashew nuts. Such a lovely touch. We're looking forward to meeting our fellow guest - Petunia the cat!
Now it's ZZZ time. The jet lag has been pretty mild but I'm looking at my dual clock and it says it's 04:45 back home! Goodnight xもっと詳しく

Where Everybody Knows Your Name

We had a fabulous first day in Boston. We met the infamous Petunia who was as purrfect as her reviews!
Our Air BnB host Pedro then kindly offered to take us to Harvard University as his guest (he is a researcher and assistant professor there) and give us a private tour. This was a real honour as we were able to access areas not open to the public such as the library (see photos) and the underground tunnels. The site is ginormous and as one would expect full of great architecture, history and a strong sense of importance. I feel smarter just for having spent a few hours there!
Pedro was full of great stories about the college and its history. My favourite was the one about the infamous John Harvard statue - known to the educated as 'the statue of 3 lies'. The 1st lie is that the year on the statue is wrong, the 2nd lie is that he wasn't actually the founder and the 3rd is that there are no records of what John Harvard actually looked like so the statue could be anybody! Despite all of this, tourists still flock to stand next to him and rub his left shoe for luck (see below).
After a little mooch around Cambridge we got on the subway and I headed for Fenway Park. I confess, I'm no true baseball fan but I did love Field of Dreams and I am a BIG Cheers fan so it just felt like the right thing to do. I managed to get on the last tour of the day and I'm really pleased I did. It had a great air about the place and I only wish I could have seen a game there.
Following my trip to the home of the Red Sox, I reunited with Kate at Boston Common. From there we headed for 'Cheers' itself. I have to admit, having watched the entire boxset with a certain someone from start to finish over the last 3 years, it was a bit emotional but I'm so glad we went. We opted to stay and eat there too. I even treated myself to a Mayday Malone cocktail.
We took the subway back to the house on a line headed for 'Wonderland'. Sadly our stop was before that so maybe that's somewhere for tomorrow. En route back to the house from Maverick station we went to check out the skyline from the nearby Piers Park (2 mins from our Air BnB). Needless to say it was spectacular. On our final meander home, we encountered a surfeit (yes I looked that up!) of skunks. Sadly it was too dark for me to take a picture. Naturally I did try but the first shutter release made its tail stand on end and so we scarpered quickly!
Tomorrow is the 4th July so much patriotism and fireworks awaits.もっと詳しく

Happy 4th July!

Today has been far less hectic than originally envisaged. I think the last few days have finally caught up with us so we had a very lazy start. In case our trip so far hadn't already seemed insanely busy my footstep counter readings have gone as follows:
Thursday 29th June - 16,083
Friday 30th June - 28,127
Saturday 1st July - 20,529
Sunday 2nd July - 12,260
Monday 3rd July - 22,900
Bearing in mind I tend to struggle to scrape 6,000 on a daily basis it's no wonder we're both a bit tired! We agreed it was time to slow down a little and not beat ourselves up about trying to see EVERYTHING!
To that end, we enjoyed spending some time with our wonderful hosts Pedro, Madeleine and Petunia. They have been such welcoming hosts and really made us feel at home. We then headed down to the waterfront to soak up the skyline in the beautiful weather. From there we headed into town and to be honest were a little disappointed to find so little 4th July activity. Kate humoured my hunt for Ally Mcbeal's office and then we headed down to see the Boston Tea Party ships. I rewarded her with our first trip to Dunkin Donuts. I've developed a need for frozen hot chocolate. This is not simply a milkshake. Oh no. You need to try it to know what I'm talking about.
We'd intended to chill out in Boston Public Park for the rest of the afternoon but the bums had shut it! So much for independence day! We caught glimpses of the infamous swan boats and waddling ducks from a distance through the railings and started to venture towards the Boston Pops for the evenings concert and fireworks. It was never our intention to be super close so we opted to take the subway over the river to Kendal and set up camp along the river bank in front of MIT. We arrived around 20:00 as the skyline was illuminated by the setting sun and the river was filled with flag flying boats. This was what we'd been waiting for. The crowd was a sea of red, white and blue and we suddenly felt very under patriotically dressed!
We found a spot by the river and waited for it to get dark whilst listening to the concert music through loud speakers. We strongly considered going to purchase deep fried oreos but the queues were so long and the prices so astronomical we settled for grape flavoured ice cones instead.
The fireworks began at 22:30 and were easily the most spectacular I've seen with the exception of Disney's. Now for the painful queue for the subway and home to pack our cases for our first road trip which begins at 8am tomorrow. Eeeeek!
Final step count for today - 17,708 (albeit a further 800 were recorded as tomorrow!)もっと詳しく

On the Road

The time has come for our first road trip. We set off with ease down the interstate towards the Cape trying not to look too smug at all the 4th July commuters coming home. The first pit stop with our new wheels (nicknamed Nora the Nissan) was a Dunkin Donuts drive thru for iced hot chocolate. Oh yeah. We know how to live it up!
We have literally fallen on our feet in terms of accomodation here. We were offered a lakeside house in West Yarmouth FOC on the basis there's no hot water. We took it and we could not be more pleased with it. We only apologise to our fellow passengers onto the train to Chicago on Friday :-/
Whilst the drive wasn't long (about 2 hours) the stress of remembering to stay on the right side of the road couples with the sheer step count of the last week got the better of me today so I spent most of the afternoon napping. Thankfully Kate was more than happy chilling on the porch with her sketchbook.
Once a little refreshed we headed out to explore the Cape during 'golden hour' and even found a light house! The houses are so quaint and beautiful. I could move here tomorrow. Being out of the city is also a nice change in pace and very much welcome right now.
Tomorrow we leave the car in Falmouth, MA en route to Martha's Vineyard. How fitting!もっと詳しく

Life on the Cape

We woke up after a wonderful night's sleep not only in our own beds but our own rooms! What a treat! Not that sharing a bed with Kate isn't a very special treat ;-)
We're so lucky to have been offered this great home to stay in for a couple of nights. Sadly as we cancelled our Hyannis hostel at such late notice we still had to pay for one night but it was totally worth it.
We're becoming quite self sufficient when it comes to food to cut down on costs so generally have cereal, fruit and yoghurts for breakfast and make ourselves packed lunches for the day. After breakfast, we set off for Woods Hole (just south of Falmouth) where we were set to get the ferry to Martha's Vineyard. It's worth noting that there are various ferry routes available to MV. This one is by far the cheapest at $15 for the park and ride followed by $17 return for the 45 minute ferry crossing. Several of the other ferries cost $60 plus before parking.
Thankfully our commute to MV was seamless. I had been concerned the day before that it could be stressful and I was in need of some downtime after our ridiculous step counts of the last week.
The ferry ride was very pleasant. The temperature on the Cape has been in the early 20s which has been a refreshing change from the early to mid 30s of the past week!
Once at MV, we headed straight to the bus and jumped on the first available with the intention of travelling around the island and hopping on and off where we fancied. Whilst the day riders were very reasonable, the bus network was very complicated. We started hatching a convoluted plan to reach the furthest point of the island (Gay Head Lighthouse) and soon came to realise that we were trying to do too much and after speaking with a couple of transit authority reps agreed we would simply visit Vineyard Haven (where we were already headed on bus number 13), Edgartown and Oaks Bluff (where the ferry landed and would depart). This was much more sensible and chilled out.
The bus journeys were very scenic passing white beaches and millionaire summer homes. We enjoyed mooching around the towns. Edgartown was full of high end stores. It reminded me a little of Dartmouth in Devon. It had a Jack Wills Store which contained photographs of stores from all across the world including Bath and Harrogate. If we'd been further into our trip I'd have probably felt quite homesick.
Oaks Bluff was a little more touristy with cheaper seaside stores but it held the biggest treat of all - the Gingerbread Houses. The Gingerbread Houses are a collection of beautiful wooden houses of all colours in their own small community behind the main street in Oaks Bluff. Many of them are available to rent. Some are simply lived in. Kate and I were in our element here choosing our ideal home. I still haven't decided!
MV was definitely worth the visit but exceedingly busy. I'd recommend going in late Spring or early Fall when it's a little quieter. I was expecting the price of things to be more expensive but things seemed rather reasonable. It's a very 'cute' island - lots of pretty houses, boats and clearly a lot of money!
We returned from MV to the car about 18.30 and headed into Falmouth MA for a nosey. We only had a couple hours of daylight left so we went lighthouse hunting and generally mosey'd down the coast back to our cottage in the woods where we made dinner, packed for the next day and attempted to get an early night.
We wanted to leave our kind hosts some thank you gifts so bought them a hummingbird feeder, cat treats for Petunia and Kate did them a lovely drawing of the house. I drew them a cartoon picture of the Spaghetti Bandit who we were very disappointed but at the same time relieved not to meet. Who on earth is the Spaghetti Bandit?' I hear you say. Well...
A couple of years ago, our hosts arrived at their lakeside abode to find the house open and lights on. Convinced they'd been broken into, they called the police. As they started to search the property, it became clear nothing had really been stolen and oddly the place seemed cleaner than ever. Clothes and towels had been laundered and put away, dishes washed, surfaces dusted, floors cleaned. The final oddity was that the kitchen cupboards were a little sparser than usual, most notably lacking in pasta. The policemen looked at each other and nodded. They'd seen the signs before. This could be the handiwork of only one crook - the Spaghetti Bandit. The Spaghetti Bandit was becoming notorious in the area for moving into empty properties, eating any food they could find but generally leaving the place in a better condition than when they arrived. The Spaghetti Bandit was on the loose and no one knew where he or she might strike next. This case belonged to none other than Inspector Nuts. This is a true story! Our hosts never did find out who the SB was so Kate and I decided he was a raccoon.
Anyway, after that tangent, I hope you enjoyed my slightly delayed but longer blog post! Be great to know if you're reading. You don't have to sign up to the site. You can just drop me a message - I have full phone and data access.もっと詳しく

Travelling West

Today we said goodbye to the Cape and embarked on our big journey across the USA. What better way to start such a big day but with a proper diner breakfast - shockingly our first in the last 8 days! We could not have had a better recommendation. The Route 28 Diner in West Yarmouth was everything you would hope a roadside diner to be - the pictures will say more than I can in words. Although I did fail to photograph the rest room which was wall to wall licence plates. The Lego girls particularly enjoyed the Lego Diner although were disappointed they couldn't join in the fun (it was behind glass and not easy to access).
Just as soon as I was getting used to driving in the states and Kate's nerves were starting to calm as I was committing to memory 'stay right', it was time to drop Nora back to Boston. At least it's given me a good warm up for the 2 week stint in California next week. Eeeeek! How is this all happening so fast?!
Our train to Chicago was on time and we were really pleased when we saw how spacious the seats were. We opted to sit opposite each other (across the aisle) so as to ensure a window seat each. This was a good move. Despite writing a 'to do list' for on the train which included activities such as reading, postcard writing, photo editing, script writing, budgeting (eugh) - I managed to complete about half of one item and spent the rest of the time catching up with the world, gazing out the window, napping and generally procrastinating!
We had a 45 minute stop in Albany so Kate and I opted to get out and stretch our legs. This is expected although it was quite disconcerting when they temporarily restricted boarding as they had to rearrange the carriages and we watched our train pull away without us!
Around 22:30, I had a hot chocolate date in the cafe car just before bedtime which was very 'Before Sunrise' - only the special few will get that reference. I'm now all tucked up with blanket, pillow, reclined seat, ear plugs and fox eye mask ready to attempt some kip (sorry too dark for pictures!). I've set an alarm for Sunrise to hopefully catch Lake Erie passing by. Sorry fellow passengers but I only intend to do this once and you made me listen to all your inane phone calls all afternoon!

Windy City

After a long night on the train with very little sleep we rolled into Chicago just after 10am having travelled through yet another timezone.
Thankfully I managed to wake up for the Sunrise over Lake Erie which was very special and the stretch into Chicago itself was also very scenic.
We beelined for the hostel in desperate hope of an early check in for if not sleep, at least showers and laundry facilities! Our room wasn't ready but 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Feeling refreshed and laundered, Kate and I ventured out into the city towards Millennium Park in search of the infamous 'bean'. It was harder to find that you'd think but we eventually got there and took all the required reflective selfies (see below). Despite a breeze, it was very hot with few shaded areas and by mid afternoon I was starting to hit a wall. I decided the best thing was to go and check in and attempt to get some sleep.
We're in a 10 bed female dorm in the HI Hostel just off Millennium Park. The facilities are all very clean, beds comfortable with plenty of sockets etc by your bed and lockers. Having done the rounds of hostels in Europe with Louise in 2014, I'd put it in the 4* category. I completely forgot to bring a padlock with me so had to purchase one from the front desk. Annoyingly it's a rotary combination lock which I've always been pants at operating so don't be surprised if you hear I've locked myself out of all my belongings!
I woke up just before 7 to find Kate on her way back to the hostel and ready to go eat. Perfect. There were two must-dos for food in Chicago according to Kate. One was pizza - obviously, the other Panda Express. As there was a Panda Express right opposite the hostel, we opted for the latter tonight. It was a solid choice and we will doubtless find another in California if we can.
After dinner, Kate persuaded me to join her on a little bike ride around the lakeside. She had spent her afternoon doing just that on Chicago's answer to the 'Boris Bike' and had a 24 hour pass for 9.99. Not a bad deal. You get 30 minutes for free and then you need to re-park the bike at a suitable station and take out another. I'm not great on bikes but it was actually a real delight. It helped that most of the journey was completely flat! We are intending to use them again tomorrow. We cycled to the planetarium where we watched the fireworks being let off at the pier and then cycled back to Millennium Park. It was about then that Kate finally hit her exhaustion wall so we walked back to the hostel and crashed. I got chatting to our of our fellow dorm mates who happens to be from Herefordshire and whose boyfriend lives in Cam! What are the chances?! Just shows how small the world is.
I'll leave you with this random fact. There are conflicting stories as to why Chicago is so-called the Windy City. My preferred choice is this one: it is the effects of the tall buildings which engineers and architects apparently did not foresee that the wind is sucked down into the streets. Walk past the Masonic Temple or the Auditorium any day even though it may be perfectly calm elsewhere, and you will meet with a lively breeze at the base of the building that will compel you to put your hand to your hat. Having worn my hat today, I can testify to this.

We Found Penguins!

After yesterday's adventures on the bikes, we decided to continue said adventure and cycle to Lincoln Park. The ride was beautiful along the lake and through the gardens. Kate and I started playing games with our bicycle bells. If we saw a good looking man it was one ring. If we saw a very good looking man it was two. If we saw Tom Hiddleston it was five rings and we'd give chase. I'm sad to say neither of our bells rang very much but it made us both smirk all the same.
Once arriving in Lincoln Park we headed for the free zoo which is where we did indeed FIND PENGUINS! I'm sorry, I don't know why this blogging website is called that either but I appreciate it's randomness all the same. After a few hours wandering around the zoo and lying down trying to cool down on shady park benches, we cycled back to Navy Pier. Here we had a splash in the fountains with hundreds of young people in an attempt to cool down!
From there we took a water taxi across the bay to the aquarium to admire the skyline from the water. It was well worth the trip and cost considerably less than any of the boat tours.
As we'd had rather a physical day on both the bikes and with the heat, we opted to head back to the hostel for showers and a rest before heading out for the infamous Chicago Deep Dish Pizza that evening and of course seeing 'the bean' by night.
We had spent most of the day deciphering the best pizza restaurant in town. We consulted the hostel, the internet, my lonely planet guide - we even asked strangers. We eventually settled on Giordano's which was conveniently situated just opposite 'the bean'. Despite a long wait, our 'Chicago Classic' pizza was worth waiting for and we even had leftovers for tomorrow's lunch.
Big day tomorrow as we board the California Zephyr bound for San Francisco. Eeeeek! It's all whizzing by so fast. I hope you're keeping up.もっと詳しく

Jackie BeardThe thought of you two in hot pursuit of Tom Hiddleston on your bikes really made me smile 😊

Steaks on a Train

Today we bid farewell to Chicago and embarked on our biggest journey of the adventure on board the California Zephyr train to Emeryville (with a connecting coach to San Francisco). The 2448 mile journey will take just over two days and takes us through 7 states and 3 different time zones. For those of you that are particularly interested you can read the full guide for the California Zephyr and the sights it travels past at the following link:
https://www.amtrak.com/ccurl/692/258/Amtrak-Cal…
Before I tell you all about our very own Casey Junior, let me say a fond farewell to Chicago. Chicago is not somewhere I've ever yearned to visit but having spent two nights there, I long to go back. My previous impressions of the 'windy city' had always seemed somewhat cold, 'windy', crime ridden and unwelcoming. Granted I've taken this from various US TV dramas and films over the years. It certainly wasn't a happy place in Sleepless in Seattle! However, this could not be further from the truth. The city seemed so full of light and colour not to mention it's diverse and stunning architecture. The colour of the lake is a beautiful turquoise blue which makes the place all the more exotic. I guess the point I'm making is - Chicago is worth a visit.
We spent the early morning repacking for our big journey... every time we do this I have flashbacks to my recurring nightmare about packing. It's awful. I genuinely have a recurring nightmare where I'm somewhere unfamiliar, running late and struggling to get all the possessions I need into a specific set of limited luggage. Generally just as I think I'm done, several drawers full of more things show up and I have a panic attack. Needless to say, every packing routine is met with a little anxiety! However, so far so good and I still have some space in my suitcase.
Once packed, we ventured outdoors to experience 'the loop' - the elevated subway system in Chicago to take a unique tour of the city. This was easily the best $3 we've spent.
We got back to the hostel to pick up our bags and enjoy our left over pizza from Giordano's for lunch only to find some *** had gone and swiped it from the fridge. Whoever stole our pizza - we hope you choke on it! Chicago pizza theft is taken very seriously in this city and so I'm pleased to say the police department have their finest officers on the case. I've heard they're even going to call in Inspector Nuts from Massachusetts!
Once over our trauma, we made our way to Union Station to pick up the Zephyr.
We are really pleased with our 'roomette'. I wish I could photograph it better for you. Essentially we have two very large comfortable seats opposite one another in our own compartment which at night folds down into two decent sized bunk beds. We also have a large window to watch the world go by from. All of our meals are included so we venture to the dining car for 3 meals a day. This is a 4 carriage wobbly walk via the Observation Car which is also a delight. We enjoyed a short stint in their after dinner to watch the sunset. Dinner was ok - I had the Amtrak Steak Special which actually wasn't half bad. It's a shame everything is served on plastic plates etc I guess you get what you pay for! We were sat with two Physics students from University of Southampton believe it or not and one of which has their PPL so naturally we got talking about aviation rather a lot.
Our beds are very cosy... so cosy I fell asleep before finishing this post!もっと詳しく

Geoff BeardI know it's a moose. But what is the difference between a buffalo and a bison ?

Joey BeardYou won't believe this but I told Kate that joke only this morning after we passed a Buffalo farm!

Fly Away on my Zephyr

Our first full day on a long distance train and what an experience it has been. We always thought the route would be scenic but nothing could have prepared us for the sights we saw. We travelled through canyons, along great rivers, around rocky mountains, past bears and bald eagles. Tomorrow only brings us more.
We were also lucky to make several new friends. We throughly enjoyed the company of Texas-based photographer Stephanie who had some very cool photography gadgets which she let us play with including glass prisms for refracting light in wierd and wonderful ways. Stephanie also had Disney films on her laptop which we watched in between the stunning scenery so naturally we became the best of friends for our short stint together. It also meant we managed to 'hog' a table seat in the Observation lounge for essentially the entire day which seemed very cheeky but we were told 'anyone that can - does'.
We enjoyed 3 meals in the dining car including french toast which was a first for me and I will definitely be having it again! Our dining companions were a wonderful Californian couple who were able to impart much wisdom and experience on us for our upcoming adventures in the Golden State.
We are now on the aptly named 'Mountain Time' soon to be Pacific. You'll be pleased to know our step count has massively reduced since we boarded the train with today's count reaching a whopping 1853 which is still a little surprising. I wonder how much of that has been generated by the movement of the train!
Anyway, I shall leave you with a suitable bunch of photos to reflect the wonderful day we've had and bid you all a happy Wednesday xもっと詳しく

Joey BeardSadly I never actually saw the bear but we were told there was one :-( I have seen eagles though. 🦃

Across America

We did it. We travelled over 3,000 miles by train from the East Coast to the West Coast of the USA. Wow. WE DID THAT. Kate and I quite regularly have these little moments where we check ourselves and realise what an amazing adventure we've embarked on so don't ever think we don't appreciate how lucky we both are.
We were genuinely sad to leave our 'Zephyr' this evening. Our fellow passengers and train crew had become a temporary little community most likely never to meet again.
It was my turn on the top bunk last night and I have to say it was no where near as comfortable. Needless to say I was a bit tired today and spent more of the day in our roomette snoozing and generally shutting the world out. The scenery was yet again amazing travelling through Nevada and California - the photographs really don't do it justice.
We are all settled into our San Francisco hostel now and I'm very sleepy. I promise to write a longer post next time. Pictures will have to say more than words tonight.もっと詳しく

Blazing Saddles Across the Bay

Today we enjoyed a bicycle tour across the Golden Gate Bridge with the Blazing Saddles Tour Company. It took 3 hours and took in many great sights and vistas. Typically the bridge itself was in fog but it was still very spectacular to cycle across.
Kate and I are having to adapt to much cooler temperatures here but we hopefully won't have to adapt for long as we push on down the Pacific Coast Highway tomorrow afternoon.
Our tour finished in Sausalito so we enjoyed a few hours mooching around the shops and pedalling further into the town to visit the infamous house boats.
On our return via ferry we met a family from Wilmslow (not far from where I grew up). I have stopped being amazed by how small this world is!
Once the bikes had been returned we enjoyed a further mooch around Fisherman's Wharf and then very slowly climbed the hill back to the hostel.
Aching all over from all the cycling, I hope I will sleep well tonight!もっと詳しく

Foggy Highway One

It was our last day in San Francisco today but we certainly made it worthwhile! In just a few hours we managed to ride the trolley car, visit Union Square, drive down the infamously windy Lombard Street, visit the Painted Ladies, have lunch looking at foggy nothingness which should have been the bridge and then drive all the way to Monterey! Needless to say I'm a little bit tired now not forgetting all the ache from yesterday's bike ride. I'll leave you with some pictures of our eventful day - I shall add to these from my camera tomorrow.
As I'm sure you're wondering, the new wheels have been christened Flora and she is a brand new Focus Sudan (only 18 miles on her!).
Our Air BnB is another cracker. I even got to have a bubble bath tonight. Many of you will know what a savoured treat that is for me!
Have a lovely weekend!もっと詳しく

Finding Joey

After a very lazy start, we headed for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is so-said that this is the aquarium on which the one in 'Finding Dory' is based. Our Air BnB came with two free passes which would save us a nearly $50 entrance fee each! We were both particularly excited about seeing the sea otters. However, I have some controversial news for you- they are not half as cute, fluffy and small as all the photos suggest! I for one, was very underwhelmed. What overwhelmed me was the jellyfish. Unfortunately all of my decent photos are on the 'big camera' so you'll have to wait for photos of these wonderful creatures and proof that sea otters are not that cute. What did thrill me was spotting some wild sea otters out at sea from the aquarium balconies. They looked so much happier.
Following our aquarium visit we had a nice little mooch around the shops and Kate introduced me to Dipping Dots - quite the ice cream sensation!
I experienced an overwhelming feeling of calm whilst sat outside the aquarium this afternoon and I couldn't quite work out what had brought it on. The penny then dropped and I realised it was because it had finally sunk in that I am not returning to work - at least not for the next 15 months. What an uplifting and freeing feeling.
With a few hours of daylight left we decided to explore the coastline south of Monterey towards Pebble Beach and Carmel and experienced the scenic 17 Mile Drive on which we encountered pelicans, seals and a beautiful Californian Sunset.
Oh yes and I FOUND MORE PENGUINS!もっと詳しく

Jackie BeardLove that penguin cute or what !! It looks like he's posing for the photo. Beautiful sunset. Xx

Pacific Coast No-Way

After over 10 hours driving, we arrived at our new Air BnB in Newport Beach. Needless to say I'm a little tired. However, the pad was well worth the drive. It's like a luxury hotel room with its own separate entrance, private bathroom and spitting distance from the beach! Well at least we think it is due to the sheer volume of the ocean. I'll confirm tomorrow.
Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself. Unfortunately a large stretch of the PCH is closed due to landslides earlier this year (see pic downloaded from google) and there is no detour. Sadly none of our research told us the 'no detour bit' so we travelled about 90 minutes south to Big Sur only to have to come all way the back up again and join the interstate. Oops. That being said, it was worth it as the section we did is easily one of the most famous and spectacular. It did however mean a lot more driving and interstate which I'm not particularly fond of! Kate was very good at supplying me with regular doses of haribo and oreos as well as doing an excellent job of navigating. She can be my wingman anytime.
We stopped briefly at Pismo Beach but sadly due to time we didn't really stop anywhere else other than Big Sur but the main thing is we are here and have a full day of 'nothing' planned for tomorrow which I cannot wait for.もっと詳しく

Life's a Beach

After the long day yesterday we enjoyed a lazy start and ventured out in search of supplies for our upcoming trek. After a fruitful raid on Target we went looking for the The Cheesecake Factory made famous by 'The Big Bang Theory'. Boy were we not disappointed. My only shame was having to take a doggy bag for my main and the cheesecake to go as I was so full. After an oreo cookie shake (never line your stomach with one of these - your Mum is right - it will ruin your dinner!) I had something called Chicken Parmesan (Pizza Style). Essentially this was a breaded chicken in the shape of a pizza base coated in marinara sauce, cheese and angels hair spaghetti. Needless to say I slipped into a bit of a food coma this afternoon. Let's say it was yesterday's drive but we all know The Cheesecake Factory holds most of the blame.
We took advantage of the beach chairs and towels provided with our Air BnB and camped out on the beach opposite the house for the afternoon. After having a brief snooze to the crashing of the waves and listening to Zero 7, I retreated to the room for a proper nap.
I ended up having a thoroughly productive evening booking all my Canadian travel which is a big weight off my mind. Just a couple of nights accomodation left. With that, I must bid you all a good Tuesday and see you on the flipside.もっと詳しく

La La Land

The day began with a geeky location spotting tour for naughties American teen drama 'The OC'. Thankfully both Kate and I were big fans so were equally excited when we found the diner the gang used to hang out in and the corresponding Pier in Redondo Beach.
From there we headed to Tinseltown to see the infamous Hollywood Boulevard. I had a slight lump in my throat when I glimpsed the Hollywood sign for the first time in the smoggy distance. It's the first time I've seen it for real since I started dreaming about being a big filmmaker. It certainly didn't mean quite the same to me when I was 9 which was the last time I was here.
It has to be said, Hollywood Boulevard is a dive. It got off to a bad start as one of the first stars I happened across was for Donald (not Duck) and I was a tad outraged. The streets are swarming and generally lined with tacky merchandise and badly dressed up movie characters. However, it had to be done and there was a big change of heart when we reached the TCL Chinese Theatre and saw all the hand and foot prints of stars gone by. That moved me somewhat - especially seeing some of the greats such as Jimmy Stewart and Harold Lloyd.
We attempted to watch the sunset from Griffith Observatory but it seemed the rest of LA had the same idea so we glumly retreated to our next Air BnB, dropped off the car and got ourselves ready to join our 'Trek America' tour to the Grand Canyon in the morning.
Looking forward to returning to LA on Saturday night for my self-indulgent studio tours and long awaited trip to Disney. Til then. Sorry for the lack of photos - most of them are on the big camera today!もっと詳しく
