Erinnerungen werden wach

Wir begeben uns auf eine ganz besondere Spurensuche. Lahr ist für Dave und Mary ein Ort voller Erinnerungen: Dave war hier ab 1973 beim kanadischen Heer stationiert. Er verlängerte seinen Aufenthalt mehrmals, sodass er mit seiner Familie insgesamt fünf Jahre hier verbrachte. Damals erkundeten sie in den Sommermonaten viel von der Gegend, bis sein Chef schließlich zu ihm sagte: „Small, if I’m not staying, you’re not staying!“ So ging es 1978 schließlich zurück nach Kanada.
Es ist ein bewegendes Erlebnis, die Stadt gemeinsam mit den beiden wiederzusehen. Auch uns gefällt Lahr ausgesprochen gut. Wir fahren direkt zur Schützenstraße, wo sie damals gewohnt haben, und machen einen Rundgang. Auch Haley sieht nun mit eigenen Augen, wo ihr Papa und ihre Großeltern einmal zu Hause waren.
Danach machen wir einen kurzen Abstecher über den Rhein nach Frankreich in die nächste Stadt. Wir kaufen Postkarten und schicken sie direkt von dort nach Hause. Den Abend lassen wir wieder gemütlich auf unserem wunderschönen Campingplatz ausklingen.

Memories are awakened

Today is all about a very special trip down memory lane. Lahr is a place filled with history for Dave and Mary; Dave was stationed here with the Canadian Armed Forces starting in 1973. He ended up extending his stay several times, and the family spent five years here. They spent their summers exploring the region until his boss finally told him, “Small, if I’m not staying, you’re not staying!” So, in 1978, they moved back to Canada.
It’s a truly moving experience to see the city again through their eyes, and we’re quite fond of Lahr ourselves. We drive straight to Schützenstraße to find their former home and take a walk around the neighborhood. It’s amazing for Haley to see exactly where her dad and grandparents used to live.
Afterward, we take a quick trip across the Rhine into France to the nearest town. We pick up some postcards and mail them right from there. We spend the evening relaxing back at the campsite, enjoying the time together.
