  • Playas del Coco, Costa Rica

    February 7, 2019 in Costa Rica ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

We sailed from Northern Nicaragua, home of our favorite surf camp and surfers - to Costa Rica. It was a pleasant overnight passage to Bahia Santa Elena for a days rest, before an even more pleasurable day sail to Playas del Coco for formalities. We saw dolphins dancing in the water, a giant Manta Ray, possibly a Bull Shark, landed our largest Dorado, and sailed into our new neighborhood setting anchor under sail power.
It’s been just over a week here in Costa Rica and we’ve zip lined, visited an animal sanctuary where we visited with tortugas, birds, monkeys, and goats.
We also visited Playa Copal to begin our kitesurfing careers while trying to survive the 35 knot Papagayo winds.
Family will arrive tonight and the adventure continues...

  • Day 12

Tamarindo, with a couple pit stops

    February 22, 2019 in Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

The adventure continues... after 3 fun weeks in Playas del Coco we departed yesterday and enjoyed a pleasant 30 mile sail to Bahia Potrero, where the old Flamingo Marina once thrived...nowadays there’s a large anchorage full of fishing pangas and charter boats and a busy road alongside, but we didn’t go ashore to explore.
We departed early to check out playa Conchal, supposedly a good shell combers beach - we expected something more like Bahia Santa Maria on the Baja peninsula, we ended up spotting a few stretches of not so fascinating shell piles. We enjoyed the soft white sand beach and the warm waves lapping the surf zone, and it’s a good thing that we packed a picnic, ‘cause both beach resorts were ‘privado’ and wouldn’t serve us a beer or a cocktail...yikes! We moved on and sailed to a swollen fishing village, now a sprawling expat community with surfing (never mind the possibility of sea snakes and crocodiles in the lineup) called Tamarindo. We are now anchored out, listening to some fun loving music loudly emanating from the beach. We will go to shore tomorrow for shopping, feasting, and surf scoping...We should be here a couple days...
