    9 de junho, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After a lovely breakfast in the garden of the B&B we walked to the Terme di Saturnia. We arrived at the terme just after opening, to enjoy the warm waters gushing out of the volcanic crater at 38 °C.
The wellness centre had many beautiful pools and waterfalls.
We spent the best part of the day there soaking in the many pools before heading off to Manciano, another Italian hill top town for dinner and accommodation for the night (plus a quick aperitivo with Chiara - a woman Lara met last year).

The day was quiet with more walking and swimming and then the evening developed into yet another wonderful party!
The neighbours from down the street had arrived from Norway (Desiree and Pierre) and invited us in to share some wine. Desiree speaks fluent Hungarian so she was very excited to speak with Rudi.
We met Elena and Milo at Sparkling Bar for aperitivo and the party developed from there as Laurent, Laura, Lavinia and Claudia joined us.
It was a wonderful night ending with an impromptu dinner on the balcony of their house above the port and piazza.

  • Day 41

    24 de junho, Itália ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

We had a mixed bag of train travel today including one section from Genoa to Milan of being jammed in like sardines.
Last year a lovely woman, Paula, offered me a lift from Fiumicino to the airport in her car - her husband Gianni is a pilot. We only spent 20 minutes together but we had an instant lovely connection. We have stayed in contact and once again Paula was our travel angel. She collected us from the train station, welcomed us into her home for the night and cooked a delicious dinner.
It was a special evening sitting around the table with her son Pietro as we shared stories and wonderful conversation.

  • Day 1 of GTA Trail (Grande Traversata delle Alpi)

    26 de junho, Itália ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

    Time to hit the trail!
We caught the bus from Airolo to Cruina which was a scenic windy road up the mountain.
Of course we started with a trail straight up but the vistas were stunning.
We stopped for a delicious chestnut cake and coffe at the lovely Corno Gries Rifugio and we were delighted to cross many snowy/icy sections.
After the pass we were met with huge views through to Lake Morasco at the bottom of the valley.
When we arrived at the lake we treated our tired feet to a dip in the cool lake water.
The dinner was venison ravioli and veal stew with polenta - absolutely delicious!

  • Day 3 GTA ITALY 🇮🇹

    28 de junho, Itália ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Started the day with breakfast at Refugio Margaroli, feeling relieved the overnight rain had cleared. The hike started alongside the lake and gently climbed through stunning mountain views onto our mountain pass for the day. As we gained altitude the going got a lot tougher with loose scree slopes, snow crossings and rock and boulder climbing with much the same on the other side of the pass.
As we decended into the Alpa Devero Valley the rain started with thunder and lightning. We were both glad to get to our B&B for the night at Alpe Devero with a lovely room and bathroom of our own.

  • Day 4

    29 de junho, Itália ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

An action packed, totally spectacular and exhausting day.
We saw wild Ibex, a beautiful snake (venomous viper), we had 2 wild hail storms as we approached high mountain passes (we just had to ride it out on the small track with a massive drop below), electrical storms, crazy detours across large boulders on rockfall and more snow crossings.
We rolled in to the Rifugio just before 6pm and had a lovely evening chatting to the staff and the 2 other guests.

  • Day 5 GTA ITALY 🇮🇹

Today was like a rest day for us, after quite a brutal day yesterday. We left Refugio Citta Di Arona in Alpe Veglia at 8 am and the trail decended though some of the deepest gorges we have ever seen, followed by beautiful lush forest. The 16.5km hike had a descent of 1300 metres to Varso with a long section of old stone donkey trail (mulattiera).Leia mais

  • Day 6 GTA

    1 de julho, Itália ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today we were anticipating a large ascent of 1755m over 16km but our stats were well over 2000m ascent and over 20km!
Thunderstorms were forecast but thankfully they seemed to move around us and we just received a few decent rainfalls and a gale force wind at the high pass. The rain made the very narrow steep path (often with a sheer drop below) very slippery and we had to concentrate on every single step. The decent was also challenging and after 11 hours we arrived at our mountain lodge where they took pity on us and 'upgraded' us to their only room with a private bathroom🙏 We both fell asleep within seconds after another lovely home-cooked meal.Leia mais

  • Day 7 GTA ITALY 🇮🇹

    2–8 de jul., Itália ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Refugio il Dosso to Alpe Cheggio
The day started with breakfast at Refugio il Dosso with home made bread, cake, yoghurt and the most delicious butter made that night from their cows.
The hike started rather gently but as the day went along it got much harder, with an elevation gain of 1400mt . The decent was extremely tough with poor and overgrown trails.
We were lucky enough to see shepherds moving two large flocks of sheep using dogs including Maremma Dogs on the high meadows.

  • Day 9 GTA

    4 de julho, Itália ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We knew that today would be another big one (listed as 7.25 hours in guide book - more like 11 hours in reality) but we were totally cooked by 12.5 hours of steep slippery 2,000 metre ascent in hot conditions.
We had some magnificent views of the Swiss Alps in the distance and a mirror flat lake below the pass but absolutely no chance to stop and enjoy.
We received a lovely welcome at our small Hotel in Campello Monti and she could not believe we had walked that distance - much to our surprise she even said we looked 'fresca' !
