  • Day 11 - its still raining

    16 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

Well, this morning's agenda includes more walking around the old town, hopefully the typhoon will die down enough to let us see some of the really interesting buildings, not worth taking photos of the outside as the rain is coming down like a sheet at the moment.

This afternoon we are due to travel to Hue, which isn't really far enough away from the typhoon, but we will see but it's all really good fun believe it or not.

Took a week's worth of washing to a laundry yesterday teatime and they brought it back to the hotel last night, cleaned and ironed, and it only cost £5 🤓

  • Day 12 tour of Hue

    17 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

Well last night ran into this morning, and today we have a rickshaw tour of Hue, assuming we all get up in time 🤣
Well it was better than walking, saw a few ancient building, but I wasn't really impressed but our guide was putting out the party line.

Rickshaw ride was brilliant the guy put a rain cover over the rickshaw but there was a viewing panel so you can see everything going on

  • Day 13 saigon here we come

    18 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Today we fly to Saigon, it's only about a 90 minute flight, so let's hope we will be out of the range of this weather front. The BBC world service weather forecast has just said that 700mm of rain has fallen in the last 7 hours 😳

Wow..an hour and a half flight and we land at Saigon..where the temperature is 33° 🫠
Glorious sunshine, absolutely astounding the difference.

  • Day 13 saigon vespa ride

    18 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

    OH MY GOD !
I certainly wasn't expecting this, 16 vespa motorscooters arrive at the hotel to take us on a night time trip through some of Saigon's districts. It lasted from 18:30 until 23:00 and we stopped off for drinks and food at places you wouldn't know existed, I'm not sure which pics or videos to attach but it was a truly memorable night 😍Läs mer

  • Day 14 change of plans

    19 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Due to some ministerial visit in the city most of the sites we were due to visit today have been closed to public visits, so our tour guide has switched our trip to the Mekong Delta to today, so we've packed overnight bags and left our suitcases at the hotel in Saigon as we will be returning for a couple more nights after the Mekong visit 😎

So Mekong Delta here we come. We've all been told to make sure we have suncream and mosquito repellant 😳

Some picks from journey to Ben Tre.

  • Day 14 mekong delta

    19 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Well we arrived on the Mekong Delta and started with a sanpan ride along the river passing by the mangrove and palm
trees along the river bank to a brick factory, after that the sanpan continued to a coconut processing plant and a candy workshop where we tasted some of the different candies made from coconut, and several coconut wine ( which was more like poteen !)

After that we visited a farmers house where he made reed sleeping mats. Then it was off on an hour long cycle ride to a farm for lunch, with elephant fish as the main course.
After lunch we had a small boat tour of some Mekong tributaries, after which a tuk tuk ride back to the coach and into Ben Tre to our hotel, "Diamond Stars" and time to shower again because it's bloody roasting and very humid.

  • Day 15 more Ben Tre

    20 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

More exploring the delta today, can't believe how hot and humid it is at 7:00. I think we are visiting a bonsai nursery today and this evening heading back to Saigon for a couple of nights before heading off to Cambodia to see Angkor Wattere given an artificial red rose to celebrate the day and outside the hotel loads of flower stalls have sprung up selling flowers and posies of all description.
It's Vietnamese national women's day today, all women at breakfast were given an artificial rose.
Well I know wine is dear here but four people in our group have just gone to settle the bar bill, and the wine they chose with their evening meal cost 16 million dong (£537) 🤣🤣🤣 I don't think they looked or checked their bill, but now it's a hilarious farce at check out.
My bottle was £30 between two of us and we were laughing because our bottle was poured into our glasses but theirs was decanted into a real fancy decanter and we said we weren't drinking the dear stuff....but I think they didn't realise 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Well disappointed with bonsai nursery, we were an hour late, our guide was more interested in talking about his view and we had no chance to listen or ask the grower any questions

  • Day 15 war remnants museum

    20 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Back in Saigon and a visit to the war remnants museum.
Quite harrowing really, it covers all the war and the continuing after effects of agent orange.

It's ironic that there appear to be several examples of horrific treatment by the Americans against civilians, and now a days there would be a massive outcry about these war crimes. I know things happened on both sides but the USA only prosecuted one person, and he had his sentence commuted by the president 😵‍💫Läs mer

  • Day 15 more

    20 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ 🌩️ 28 °C

Went exploring the town and came across a bar, so stopped for a beer and meal. After the meal we were invited up to the third floor to an acoustic session, we were the only Europeans in the place and treat like royalty. The owner came and asked us how we found the place and when the group took a break they rushed over to us to thank us for coming and listening to them , they were really charming. Left around midnite and as we left everyone in the room was waving to us and saying thank you, goodnight, hope to see you again. Then they ordered a taxi to take us back to the hotel....really good night😍Läs mer

  • Day 16, the cu chi tunnels

    21 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

...another must do is this visit to the cu chi tunnel system.

The VC Soldiers used the network of underground routes to house troops, transport communications and supplies, lay booby traps and mount surprise attacks, after which they could disappear. The tunnels linked VC support bases over a distance of some 250 kilometers, from the outskirts of Saigon all the way to the Cambodian border.

There are exhibitions of the booby traps used against the Americans and you can see the actual tunnels that are still in place. There is a tunnel that you can go down and then wander through the tunnels, I managed the first one but it's tiny lol, can't imagine how people actually lived, worked and fought from them.

  • Day 16 lunch

    21 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

..stopped for lunch at chef Tan's cooking school, apparently chef Luong Viet Tan was a MasterChef in Australia and he now teaches about self sufficiency by growing the food for his kitchen

He teaches about using food and herbs as a medicine, and his lunch was superb and unlike anything I've tasted on this tripLäs mer

  • Day 16 independence palace

    21 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

The independence palace is the place where a North Vietnamese tank crashed through the main gates to end the war.
It's quite an impressive building that is set back in time to April 1975. The rooms are neat clean and tidy, two tanks in the grounds along with the F4 fighter that bombed the palace.

I'm not sure if it's because it's a Saturday but there is a food festival in the grounds with some strange foods including dried insects and live grubs 😳

Well it's goodbye to Vietnam and hello to Cambodia today, we fly out of Saigon and direct to Siem Reap and tonight it's off to the circus 🎪, no idea what to expect so watch this space....

Well that was a painless experience going through the airport, got a complete row to myself on the plane and for little people there's plenty of leg room 🤓

Well we landed at the new airport which is about 45 minutes from the city, our new guide explained that the airport is only 5 days old 😳

What a really good show, only an hour long but well worthwhile, after the circus went into the town to have a look around, - one stall selling t shirts for..$1 ( that's 82p) !!! Beer 75 cents 😍Läs mer

  • Day 18 Ta promh temple

    23 oktober 2023, Kambodja ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

The temple has been used in quite a few films, such as tomb raider. it's amazing to see how the jungle has taken over and kapok trees and strangler figs are now growing out of the ruins.
