  • Catacombe S.Callisto

    1 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Very interesting trip down into the catacombe. Founded in the 3rd century and the resting place of Popes who were all moved and hidden in the 8th century to keep them safe.
Very informative guide who was very passionate about his faith and the persecution of Christians.
Well worth a visit and very quiet.
Be prepared for steps... no lifts here.

  • On strike!

    1 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Honestly could not walk another step so I am protesting right here with this bottle of wine... oh and him in doors! (The ruins are the Circo Massimo) chariot racing arena built in the 6th century BC and was the first and largest stadium built in Ancient Rome and is still used today. (Although the beast hunts have stopped!!) And in the 1980s they uncovered tiered seating and the starting gates but covered them up again to a depth of 9 m....Leer más

  • Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

    2 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Have spent a very happy morning mooching through the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
Completely in awe of the sheer size of the place and how much there is still left to discover.
You can feel the importance of the area as you wonder through.
Only criticism is lack of information for visitors, we are not archeologists therefore some of it just looks like piles of rock and brick.
Very worth a visit and would highly recommend.

  • You never know what to expect!

    2 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

So, We arrived in Napoli and asked our wonderful host what to eat. She walked us to the end of the block, pointed down the road and said, "Michele's, in the Piazza." So, in the rain and with lightning all around, off we trudged. When we arrived we found the sort of restaurant that you wouldn't even give a second glance at in the UK, yet odly, there was a queue awaiting to get in. So we took our ticket number and waited in line.
We only just ate in one of only 15 Michelin starred pizza restaurants in the world!!! No menu. Either margarita or marinara, Either beer or coke. That was it. Best pizza we've ever tasted. Julia Roberts also ate here in the film Eat Pray Love. A truly marvellous dining experience that everyone who comes to Napoli should try.

  • Herculanium

    3 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

We first learnt of this historical place whilst at infant school and we have both waited many years to visit and it was definitely worth it.
An amazing historical site that provokes many thoughts and emotions as you learn about the lives of the people who lived here and about what they were doing in the moments before they died.
Some of the timber, including bed frames and staircases is preserved and visible nearly 2000 years after being buried. There are also paintings still on the walls and many mosaic floors completely intact.
    A truly amazing experience.

  • Top of the world

    3 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Getting up Vesuvius requires a fair bit of effort but it is worth it. Watching steam venting from an active Volcano 1281 meters up, reminds you that nature, not man is in charge of this planet. And the aged 4x4 Pandas is how the staff get up and downLeer más

  • Pompeii

    4 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

What a marvellous preservation of ancient history. The excavations have been ongoing for 300 years and there is still so much to uncover.

  • Pompeii ii

    4 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

More from what has been an excellent day touring Pompeii. It is huge and It is incredible to think how much material has been removed in order to expose the ruins. Work is still continuing with much of the area still to be unearthed. You will need all day to visit this site and you will need plenty of food and drink especially in the summer when there is no relief from the sunLeer más

    4 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Last few pics. It is just amazing. We would suggest that you with a get a tour guide or an audio guide. There is no information inside the ruins and the maps and paper guides are confusing and out of date which makes wandering quite difficult. It is definitely worth paying for a guide.Leer más

  • Home Cooked Food

    4 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We are staying in a lovely room with a view of Mount Vesuvius and last night the father in law of the owner cooked us dinner and it was beautiful. We sat outside with a bottle of wine and had the anti pasti you can see and genuine home cooked carbonara. The Visa View apartment in Pompeii is a little gem of a place.Leer más

  • Unscheduled Stop

    5 de octubre de 2019, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Having left Pompeii we had to come to Salerno to change trains for Rome. We decided to break the journey and have a wander, and it was really worth it. A lovely place with history, a harbour, a Cathederal with a Pope interned in it, good food and friendly people. Well worth a visit.Leer más

  • Sistine Chapel.

    7 de octubre de 2019, Ciudad del Vaticano ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Totally blown away by the Sistine Chapel. No pics as copyrighted but visit this spot. Will change your life.
Michelangelo did not want to paint it. He spent 7 months saying no to the Pope before agreeing and he was paid $500,000. He took 4 years to paint it.
He came back 20 years later to paint the Last Judgment which is spectacular. It's also where they hold Conclave for the appointment of a new pope. The 2 ancient stoves are removed unless conclave and the chimneys are removed. The pics are from the Vatican museum.
Now off into St Peter's Basilica.

  • St Peter's Basilica

    7 de octubre de 2019, Ciudad del Vaticano ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Absolutely stunning, the 2nd building as the first was removed and this one replaced it. Very excited to see Michelangelo Peter. Unfortunately surrounded by glass after an Auatralian went nuts with a hammer. The Altar cover is made of 600 tons of bronze and is designed to draw the eye when you enter. 147 popes are buried here. Well worth a visit buy so crowded as had been closed for 4 days.Leer más
