A small bus with a most entertaining driver. Crossed the Clyde at Dumbarton, the home of Ballantyne whisky. I believe where the Cutty Sark was built. Along the Leven river to Loch Lomond and a stop a Tarbet for the views of Ben Lomond. Tarbet for a cealec for full boat.

Inverary is a pretty town with fairytale castle. Aside from a dower Edwardian church the architecture is very sama same as specified by Lord Argyle and all white my. The castle is built in green schist that changes colour with the weather and the light. Sits on the side of Loch Fyne.

Kilchurn castle, I think on the side of Loch Awe. Was very picturesque. Jumped a bit when the just subsonic Typhoon overflow I guess on the way to Loosiemoth.

Travelled along Loch Awe famous for its oysters and submarine base. The base will be a tricky part of negotiations if Scotland gains independence.

Beautiful Oban for lunch. Lots of seafood options and photo ops.

The highlight on the way back to Glasgow was Glencoe which deserves two footprints. One for the Piper at the Three Sisters lookout and one for the rest. Separate footprint.

Glencoe has a sad history the Clan MacDonald was massacred by William III in 1692.

The valley is a very long and spectacular carved by glaciers and surrounded by craggy peaks. The visitors centre is very good, there are insights into the history, a display on alpine rescue, any a wonderful recreation of turf family home.

Driving away from the town we pass the Harry Potter film site of Hagred's hut. We stop at the Three Sisters lookout where the ambiance is enhance by a busking piper. Further along is the Glencoe Ski centre. At the top of the valley very extensive peat bogs.

  • Skara Brea

    14 de septiembre de 2023, Escocia ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

Delightful morning tea and scones at Tea For Two at Birsay. Enjoyed the Scottish breakfast tea.

The site is older than Stonehenge and the pyramids, it is 5000 years old or 3100 BCE. The Neolithic village, the houses were preserved by the cover of sand dunes and only discovered in the 1850s. The is very well organised, starts with a very informative exhibition covering many facets of the original structures and insights into there day to day lives. Then there is a replica home, this is important as it protects the originals from the hordes of tourists.

Very keen windsurfer, out jumping waves.

  • Churchill barriers and Italian chapel

    14 de septiembre de 2023, Escocia ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Churchill barriers, sunken ships and concrete blocks. It was the sinking of HMS Royal Oak more than 80 years ago that set in motion plans to build these four concrete causeways. A German U-boat crawled into Scapa Flow in October 1939 and fired torpedoes at the slumbering battleship, resulting in the loss of 834 lives. Now the causeway are important links to the mainland to isles of Lamb Holm, Glimps Holm, Burray and South Ronaldsay.

Italian chapel, amazing what was achieved with a couple of Nissan hits. These POWs labour was used in building of the Churchill barriers.

Lunch at the Murray Arms Hotel at the aptly named St Margaret's Hope on the island of South Ronaldsay. Crab meat sandwich, more than enough for two. With a pint of Orkney Gold.

  • Ring of Brodgar, Stenness Standing Stone

    14 de septiembre de 2023, Escocia ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

The Ring of Brodgar Stone Circle and Henge is an enormous ceremonial site dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. A massive stone circle, originally consisting of 60 stones – 36 survive today. At least 13 prehistoric burial mounds. A large rock-cut ditch surrounding the stone circle.

The Stones of Stenness today consist of four upright stones up to 6m in height in a circle that originally held 12 stones. The focus of the interior was a large hearth. The stones were encircled by a large ditch and bank, the form of which has been lost over time by ploughing.

Lunch at Stromness. Lovely soup in a riverside cafe.
