1st stop on our drive today. Very nice spot, more for fishermen I think, though we did see a young man packing up his surf kite? Our real surprise was when we walked out on to the boat ramp jetty and realised there was a large school of fish (hundreds, thousands) swimming around here. It looked like a dark shadow in the water but it was fish swimming together.Lue lisää

Called here at, guessing mid tide, to be able to see some of the ship wreck sitting out of the water. Decide we'll call back later on the way 'home' and see what the difference in tide is like.
Yes we did this, and we must have struck mid tide again, as the shipwrecks level out of the water was very similar. Roger did see a whale launch out of the water in the distance, and I can agree there was a whale there as we both saw a big 'splash' again a little while later.Lue lisää

Called into this beach via one of the tracks leading to this area. Beautiful though certainly very rocky in the shallows. We didn't see any surfers, but could see a group of people out in the water - far away - (tour?) snorkling or diving? No boat with them.
Our bonus here was obvious turtle tracks on the beach - seemed like an attempt at digging a hole to lay eggs?

Call in here to check about conditions for snorkling today. Oyster Stacks Beach is closed for snorkling today (tide timings not good and currents too strong). Recommend Torquoise Bay - still being mindful of strong drift and currents.
We have a cuppa here, cappuccino and a hot chocolate $5 each. I also purchase a hat pin and some insect repellant.

This is our stop where we finally get in the water! My first try at snorkling and it was amazing! I still need to work out a few techniques for visibility improvement and more practise to be more confident - but wow, the underwater life was fantastic. The colourful fish - all different shapes, patterns and sizes wow! Was trying to not freak out in amongst the coral - which was amazing too. Just with the strong drift I was worried I'd drag over it! I would come here everyday if I could! Would get good at snorkling then hey! Roger was impressed with the underwater world too - just struggling to keep water out of his snorkel mask with his mostache!Lue lisää

Get to this spot and park in the carpark. Must say it's worth the drive. Scenery along Charles Knife Gorge road is magnificent - even more so on the way back I discover!
Check the information board about the walk - yes we're well prepared - and this morning mild (not hot) with a fair amount of breeze. This walk is a loop - which always makes me happy. Great morning for it!
Enjoy this walk with Roger 😍💕

We've arrived here this morning by Ningaloo Discovery Tours mini bus. Roger and I, along with 18 other paying customers, are about to be ferried by tender (smaller boat - requires 2 trips) to a 60ft luxury catamaran to embark on their Eco Tour. This is cheaper than their usual Whale Shark tours as there is no guarantee that we will see any as it is outside the whale's peak season. Well no such worry about that today! We are introduced to our crew, 5 of them to look after us - and boy they all did an excellent job of that. After being fully briefed about the tour (safety and expectations) and getting 'kitted up' with wetsuits, flippers, masks and snorkels and having our trial swim in the bay area, we head out past the reef into the open sea. We have been out in open water less than 10 minutes (barely time to enjoy the lovely food being offered) - when we get to see 2 humpback whales swimming about 100m from us, one of them does a couple of breaches out of the water - a wonderful display. Then next thing, the call goes up that we're beside a Whale Shark - turns out to be at least 3! As instructed, we GO,GO,GO in our groups of 10 each with a staff leader and get in the water with them. As I am the 'weakest swimmer' in the groups, I am very well looked after by my group leader who literally tows me along with her. Due to this I get the most amazing experience of swimming beside and around an incredible Whale Shark. This one was about 4m long (small one) and stunning to watch, just calmly, gracefully gliding through the water. Beautiful creatures, I am in awe. So enthralling to be so close and check out the patterns and colour of its skin. This one had a large scar (white looking mark) along its back (find out later this is probably from a boat propeller, and had a large ontourage of quite large to small fish swimming underneath its belly. This turns out to be for mutual benefit - cleaning and protection. I would have been near this Whale Shark for a good 5+ minutes - just unreal! When it was time to get back on board the catamaran - I knew I was in trouble with seasickness. I spent the rest of the tour 'battling' nausea, after doing my bit to supply 'burley' overboard, oh the misery! Anyway, that aside - this tour was a total success for Whale Shark sightings today. Our crew 'spotter' Sam says he lost count of how many he saw in the water (at least 11) and both our groups got 3 opportunies each to be in the water with the Whale Sharks. I only managed my 1 swim with them, Roger managed 2 swims before he succumbed to sea sickness too. Thankfully Roger wasn't as bad with it as I was (no throwing up and he managed to have lunch). We weren't alone with feeling sick (at least 3 others) but we were about the only ones who didn't take some preventative 'travel calm' medicine beforehand. Lesson learnt - I will for next time! After the lovely onboard lunch (I couldn't manage) we headed back into the calmer waters of the bay and we all got to drift snorkel - once we got off the catamaran it travelled off to a point where it could pick us up after we had floated I'm guessing a good 200m over corals full of marine life - really spectacular (though unfortunately for me I was not feeling well enough to fully appreciate). Once back onboard - it was time to celebrate with all the lovely fellow snorkellers with a glass of bubbles and more lovely nibbles (I managed some slices of fresh fruit). Next, time to get us all back to shore - earlier than usual for the crew as it was such a successful Whale Shark outing (so many, so close and no having to share time with other tour operators - ours today the only tour company out on the water). Once back on shore we load back onto our tour bus and get returned to our caravan park.

the tour operator we went with today - totally recommend them. Talking with some other participants today (a couple from Perth) - they try to do a swim with Whale Sharks each year, this is their 5th time, and 2nd time with this operator as they feel they are the best. Plus they (Sarah & Tim) said today's outing was their best by far!
I could not fault Ningaloo Discovery team with their care, professionalism, and passion for their work. Gave us all the opportunity for a fantastic experience. It was!

Roger and I decide to walk to the shopping area this morning and have a look about on the way. First stop is at a Bookstore, where Roger buys a couple more Lee Child books. Then on to Mutts Cafe. Next checkout the Big Prawn and the Whale Shark. Proceed past the public swimming pool and Federation Park. End up at IGA to do some grocery shopping. I make sure I get what I need to make Thermomix "Marry Me Chicken Pasta". While shopping I accidentally 'pocket call' Michael. Michael calls me back, and I enjoy a quick catch up with Michael and Jen, unfortunately I wasn't hearing them very well as out and about with people, traffic and wind noise! Now with our grocery shopping, time to head back to our camp site.Lue lisää

    18. lokakuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

Call in here and park in the carpark. There is only one other vehicle here, and as we're parking, we notice Nudist Beach written on both sides of the walkway on the railings. Oh interesting....there is a lady sitting in the other vehicle but the drivers side is empty.
Roger declares there'll be no nudists as it's a turtle watching area.....well we discover the one man on the beach this morning is nude lol. I see a flash of his bare bum to realise, so I studiously make sure I'm looking at the beach away from him. Haha I feel Roger feels 'ripped off' as there is no female counterpart on display - lots of muttering from Rog!
Anyway - we checkout the beach area and can see turtle tracks up on the shore. Then looking out to the water - we are lucky enough to see a couple of turtles surface for a quick breath and then gone again. Feel we're probably on overtime here with our clothes on - so back to the ute to drive to Five Mile Beach .

Arrrrrrh...this is the beach that clothed people can come to, to look for turtles. Lots of great signage along the walkway to the beach with turtle information. When we get to the beach, we see no sign of turtle tracks in the sand, though looking out to the water we can see a fairly large turtle bobbing around at the surface. Continue watching this turtle as it's coming closer to the beach - going underwater then appearing again. I'm just about to take a photo with my mobile when I get an incoming call. It's Robert - so turtle pic is forgotten. Enjoy a chat with Robert letting us know Roger's mobile has been handed in to the reception at our caravan park. Oh that's funny - Roger knew he'd left it behind today but thought it was at our caravan- took Robert trying to call him - to find out where it really is! Apparently handed in as it was left in the amenities block (toilet lol). Anyway Robert got to catch up with us - all good 💕 After this call, ready to drive on to our next point of interest.Lue lisää

Decided to sneak this walk in before we go snorkling.... I've read that this walk is 2.6km loop, and based on our previous walks in this area, I've blithely told Rog we should manage it in around 30 minutes. Know I shouldn't do that! Proof in this is a good challenging walk, worthwhile for sure! Took us 50 minutes to do the approx. 3km trail. Just gorgeous - glad we had the right gear (good shoes, Roger in his runners, and me with my hiking sandals - hats, sunnies and water bottles of course).Lue lisää

Arrive here to go snorkling - before the 12.20pm cut off time. This beach is tide dependent- on when best to snorkel. You need to come at high tide so you can swim above the coral.
We have made it in time and once we get in the water - a bit tricky as you have to navigate over rocks - it is just fantastic!
I am getting more comfortable with my snorkel gear (in fact I wish I had flippers on today) and this spot is great for beginners like me. The marine life here is incredible- as soon as I put my face with mask under the water I'm seeing fish of all kinds. Just don't know my fish well enough to say what they are - but boy there is an array of all shapes, sizes and colour 😍 Rog and I spend a good 30 minutes in the water having the best time marvelling at all the sights in amongst the coral. I can see why people have small underwater cameras with them.

  • Town Beach for rising full moon

    18. lokakuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

It's full moon tonight - would be staircase to the moon in Broome, so we're here to see what the rising moon over the sea does here in Exmouth. We're not exactly sure what time it's going to happen tonight here - our googling tells us 6.47pm in Broome, so surely it will be similar here.....
We've driven down - bringing along our esky with meat to BBQ and salad prepared. Chilled bottle of bubbles - forgot our drinking vessels, thankfully got some plastic mugs in the ute and camp chairs.
We set up beside the closest public BBQ to the carpark - position our chairs facing the sea. Ready for the action when it happens. After settling with our drinks Roger figures he'll start the BBQ ready to cook.....oh dear no go! These BBQ's (2) aren't working. No big deal, we'll have tea later when we get back to our caravan. Now 7pm comes about - and it's pitch dark....now worried that we've 'stuffed up' and may have missed the right night? All works out - moon appears rising over the sea around 7.25pm. Beautiful sight - may not have the full 'staircase' as not reflecting off sand bars like it would low tide in Broome, but still darn good reflecting on the water here. Enjoy this on the top of the beach near the park area. Reasonable amount of cars on the beach with plenty of people there to enjoy it too.

  • Coral Bay

    19. lokakuuta 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Oh what a lovely coastal town, can see why it is so popular and the caravan parks are expensive (demand enables). Roger is settled on wanting to get to Carnarvon today - so we're going with a 'day trip' here. As we were driving here I googled things to do in Coral Bay - and one that took my fancy - the beach walk to the shark nursery. Our luck is with us, on checking at the Information centre - tide is right now (high tide) to go and see if any reef sharks are about. Stunning beach walk to the bay they call 'Shark Nursery' and there were at least 20 sharks swimming about. We stayed out of the water and just viewed from the beach and getting up on sand dunes. Plenty of people were wading in the water with them, and a few were snorkling - totally not meant to be doing! Once we get back to the main beach area we decide to go get in our bathers and go for a snorkel. We do this - very enjoyable, but we found this beach's coral nowhere near as colourful as yesterday's Oyster Stacks - and not so prolific with marine animals either. Still very nice, and a relaxing spot to snorkel. Next we go back to our caravan (parked in the main street) and get changed so we can go have some lunch. We end up at the Bakery - very delicious food, Roger has a beef salad roll and I get a chicken foccicia (toasted). We share a chocolate eclair (just as well - it's huge) and have cold drinks each. Well, we've enjoyed our quick look at Coral Bay, back to the road travelling we go.Lue lisää
