  • Capricorn Caravan Park Carnavon

    Oct 19–21, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

Get here after calling into the 1st service station we came across - we needed fuel!
First impressions good with this park - and it continued as we booked in for 2 nights with friendly and helpful staff. Low season rates apply here - so happy to get a powered site for $25 a night. We're allocated site 125 and when we come to settle on it, I'm delighted with it's position, and we're in a very quiet area 'by ourselves' at this stage. Once we are set up, we go for a drive into Carnarvon to have a look. Nothing much open on a Saturday afternoon, but happy driving about looking at the water and wharfs. We find a Woolworths so we stop and do a 'top up' grocery shop. Back at our camp, we wander about the park checking out the amenities - really nice. Discover there is a food van on site tonight - I can't resist - it's Chinese takeaway, so our leftovers we were going to have can wait for tomorrow now! While waiting for our food order to be ready, Rog and I go roll some bowling bowls on the green here - good fun, and naturally Rog won. Our tea is yummy, Sweet and sour pork with rice for Roger, and Combination udon noodles for me, very fresh tasty ingredients. Shower time and now relaxing before bed.
Get up around 7am this Sunday morning. Nice and easy no rush, we have our breakfasts, weetbix and toast for Roger, muesli and banana for me. We get a call from Tegan, and Robert has joined as well, so it's great to have a catch up chat. Once we're organised we drive into Carnavon to do the walk along the old tram line to the old Jetty.
We come back for lunch, microwave reheat the chicken pasta, before heading out for another drive to check out some more of Carnarvon.
When we get back again we just relax in the caravan park, go for a swim then a shower, before having tea. This morning before we came back from our walk, we stopped at Woolworths and got some marked down cheap pizzas for tonight's tea. Roger cooks them up in the camp kitchen oven - and we sit and eat them while watching TV - the telethon and news. Roger does the dishes, while I catch up my budget books and get this up to date. Next I'll dry dishes and put away before going to bed too.
We're up before 6.30am - get into our moving day routine, breakfast, tidy up, and get all packed up and away to safely shift. We're underway around 8am. Will do a few things - go to Autopro and Woolworths in Carnarvon before calling in at the Space Museum on our way out.

  • Drive about Carnarvon

    October 20, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Head off to do a walk this morning. Take some photos at the main foreshore area before heading off for a walk to the One Mile Jetty.
Later in the day we go for another drive to do the 'Fruit Loop' where you can purchase produce directly from the suppliers by driving past their properties where they have stalls to sell direct. Being a Sunday - there wasn't too many 'open' for business, and those that were, we didn't call in as our fruit and vegetables are stocked at present. Next we go check out Carnarvon's beach - not as pretty as others, but still a good spot for some relaxation.Read more

  • Carnarvon Space & Technology Museum

    October 21, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

Arrive here after going into Carnarvon to do a top up grocery shop. We were still here too early - so we just waited until the Museum opened. Cost $20 each and an easy way for us to fill in a couple of hours. Wow mankind is clever (and brave).Read more

  • Scenic Lookout between Carnarvon &Denham

    October 21, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We drive up to this lookout - as it's a break from the flat countryside we've been driving through. Nice to stretch our legs and take in the expansive views. We've called here at the same time as a group of motorbike riders. Get to admire their bikes as well - most Harley Davison's.
Today we've eaten our lunch while driving along - got out leftover cold pizza from last night when we left Carnarvon. Now with this stop we grab out some fruit and yoyo biscuits before we get going again.

  • Shark Bay Discovery & Visitor Centre

    October 21, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

We arrive in Denham and park in the main street area so we can call into this Visitor centre. I go to the Post Office beside this first, so I can post Shannen's 30th birthday card. I ordered some Aroma Pot candles online last night to be sent directly to Shannen as our gift.
Roger's already loaded up with information by the time I join him at the centre. He says the staff have done a terrific job in giving ideas of what we can do in our short stay here. I have a quick browse, get a Shark Bay hatpin, a card and a post card. That'll do....easy to be tempted in these places!

  • Tasman Holiday Parks Denham

    Oct 21–24, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

Come here as it's a G'day Parks partner. Can tell it's going to be a higher price as it's such a great beachside location. Yep $51 powered site per night (thank goodness for G'day discount). We book for 2 nights initially, though by the time we're set up and checking what we'll do here, we can tell we'll probably stay another night (3). Decide would be a good idea to do our weekly clothes washing etc now, it's windy enough hopefully get dry quick enough... $6 per load, we have our usual 2 loads to do. Once it's washed and we've got it on the park's lines to dry we feel it's a good time to go for a walk. We follow a recommended town heritage walk - very good to get us checking about Denham. When we get back it's time for tea. Easy cheats one tonight, we've got packaged (on special to get used) spinach and ricotta pasta that we just reheat in the microwave. Follow this with a fresh fruit salad (Roger made) and yoghurt. Not many dishes - I'm going to leave them for tomorrow morning (slack attack, I usually like them done at the end of the day) - like our washing that's still on the line. Roger goes showers, I'm updating this - then it will be relax and bedtime.
We get up and have our breakfast and then get organised to go out driving today - planning to visit Monkey Mia and surrounds. Roger has packed our eski so we can make our lunch wherever we end up. Leave our camp before 8.30am.
We get back around 2pm, we're happy to just take it easy at our caravan for the rest of the day. Reading and writing (writing is me, sending cards - Jordan & Dani for baby shower, postcard for Sally Reynolds-Johnson re post surgery for broken hip). Tea tonight Roger cooks up pork steaks with vegetables and airfryer potato chips. Have our preserved pears with yoghurt to follow. Next we walk to the sunset viewing platform here at our caravan park - lovely sunset over the bay, but didn't stay out long - very blustery winds tonight. Roger has his shower, we tidy up, now resting until bed.
Roger has plans for today - and what great plans they turned out to be! We started off by getting up early - me dressing straight into my bathers and putting my fishing shirt over the top with trackies. Get ourselves organised to be away for the day - eski filled for egg & bacon breakfast and meat and salad sandwiches lunch. We leave around 7am and stop in at the Shark Bay Bakery so Roger can get fresh bread. We're now heading off to enjoy the Francois Peron National Park (FPNP).
We return from this outing, after getting fuel in Denham on the way back, at around 4pm. We unpack from the day out and go and have our showers. Relax about the caravan until tea - Roger makes up mince into tacos, soft shells with salad. Tidy up, and I wash the dishes. Roger to bed reading, I'm sitting up catching up my budgeting books and writing this, then it'll be bedtime for me too.
Wake up this Thursday morning, nice and early, before 6.30am - as it's our last morning in Denham I decide to go and enjoy a morning shuffle to check out more of the beaches beside our caravan park. I get back shortly after 8am (managed 9km). Note: on this outing I did have a little incident with 2 dogs (red heelers) running from their owner (no recall) flat out to me, and the older one circling and barking at me while I keep trying to jog. It almost tripped me a couple of times and I was worried (trying not to show it) that it might bite/nip the back of my legs! When the owner finally arrived (we met heading towards each other) she crossly told me my running was stirring 'him' up and could I stop so she can catch him. "Sure" I said as I did, then once she had this dog on a lead (younger dog just following it) I continued on my way....before I said something that could escalate!
By this time Roger is pretty much got us sorted and ready to leave. I have my breakfast and then go have a shower - now Rog is ready. So we head off to meet Andrew, Georgina and Daisy (their cute dog) for 9.30am at the Cafe beside the Post Office. When we park in Denham's main street, Rog realises he's left his good hat at the caravan park - so he drives back to get it while I go and post my couple of items and meet up with our travelling friends. Rog gets back and joins us - we enjoy a cuppa and a good catch up, before Roger and I leave Denham. Georgina and Andrew are staying a few more days. I'm hoping our paths will cross again - really lovely couple.

  • Monkey Mia

    October 22, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Arrive here to find that to enter into Monkey Mia we have to pay an entry fee that covers the Dolphin Experience. Rog and I thought we wouldn't worry about that, we'd just look around - that's not how it works, to proceed in we need to pay anyway. Phew, thankfully it's only $15 each for a 'day pass', so in we go! Turns out our timing is perfect to see the 2nd and 3rd (out of 3) Dolphin Experiences held for the morning. Glad we did get to see the dolphins - they do a great presentation explaining about the dolphins and the reasons they run the program the way they do (care for the dolphins). Our nice surprise is that we catch up with Georgina, Andrew and their dog Daisy here - we haven't bumped into them since Katherine. Enjoy a catch up chat - find out they're staying in Denham too, at the Shark Bay Holiday Park. Make plans to meet up again before we leave for Geraldton later in the week. Roger and I go do the walk here at Monkey Mia - lovely one that includes the beautiful coast. After this we check out the shops. I make a couple of small purchases - continue my hatpin collection, and get a waterproof pouch for my mobile. We're now ready to leave and explore the coast on the way back to Denham.Read more

  • Beach driving Redcliff Bay

    October 22, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

We decide to check out the coast so once we get near the soft sands and hard rocks we let the tyre pressures down on our ute to 20psi. First beach we go on is very soft sand, and doesn't continue along like we thought it would (looking at our hema maps). So once we're on firmer ground we stop and have a look around, stunning colours of the terrain, and work out we'll have to go back the way we just came. Have a cuppa 1st by heating our billy, and once finished, return as we need to. Now go driving along the tracks running parallel to the coast without driving onto the beach. We do pull up at a parking place to get out and wander onto a beach that we can see a couple of people out gathering 'something' into their buckets. I go have a chat with an indigenous lady who's out there - she's happy to show me and explain what she's getting. Turns out she's looking for oysters (got half a bucket full) and collecting large empty shells. Today she's found 2, a Conch and a Cowrie. Roger and I enjoy a chat with this friendly lady, then resume our drive. Head back to the main road, we stop and Roger reinflates our tyres, while I make up our ham and salad rolls for our lunch. Eat these before we head off.Read more

  • Peron Heritage Precinct FPNP

    October 23, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Arrive at what used to be Peron's sheep station. Our first point of call here is the Hot tub and BBQ area. We're going to cook up our breakie, then have a relax in the tub. After we've done this, we wander around the circuit walk, the Pepper Trail, and enjoy 'stepping back in time' and looking at how things used to operate here while it was a sheep station. Also get to check out the conservation works now that it has become a National Park. All good.Read more

  • Artesian Hot Tub & BBQ picnic area

    October 23, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

This is part of the Peron Heritage Precinct. Oh what a wonderful set up. We can't believe our luck, we're the 1st visitors to arrive today, so have it all to ourselves to start off with! On chatting to the caretaker (? person moving the watering sprinkler and cleaning the BBQ) we're definitely got the best time of day to enjoy the tub. We agree! Have a very yummy and filling breakfast - bread, avocado, tomato, Meredith goats cheese with cooked bacon, eggs and mushrooms. Pack our breakfast gear away back in the ute, then come back and enjoy the hot tub for a while - bliss. Roger gets out before me - to go deflate the ute tyres ready for our soft sand driving today. When I get out I go wait until Roger's finished the tyres, then we go for the walk around together.Read more

  • Cape Peron FPNP

    October 23, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Well, we decide to drive to the furtherest point - this being Cape Peron. and then we'll check out the other places on our return journey.
We quickly discover why it's requested that 4WD'ers lower their tyre pressures - to help prevent 'bogging' and tearing up the tracks! We initially haven't lowered ours enough for the soft loose sand conditions - and we flounder into a stop (yep we're bogged) when we get to the really 'loose' section. It's recommended that you drop your tyre psi to at least 20 - we started off at 22 but after getting stuck - dropped the tyres to 16. After this we only had one other tyre incident, on turning in a soft patch (maybe a tad fast?) one back tyre lost more air - our tyre pressure monitor alerted us, and at our next stop we checked the 'very squishy' looking tyre and it was down to 8psi. Pumped it back up to the 16 - and went along no worries for the rest of the drive.
Anyway, back to arriving at Cape Peron...just stunning. Not quite at the best time (high tide) for viewing marine life at their closest, but not too far off so did get to see a turtle and some manta rays. Enjoy a leg stretch with a short walk to marvel at the coast's scenery - what awesome colours.
A bit sad we didn't do the trail walk here - but knew we had plenty of other places to see today.

  • Skipjack Point FPNP

    October 23, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

This spot was a high light for me - wow the views with colours to be seen, and great vantage point to see marine life moving about. We saw plenty of rays, and Roger saw a turtle (I missed that one). Not lucky enough to see any dugongs....yet🤞
It's while we're parked here that we rectify the over deflated back wheel.

  • Bottle Bay FPNP

    October 23, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

This is another picture postcard spot. After walking down to its beach from the carpark - we debate whether to go for a swim/snorkel here, but as tempting as it is, decide not to as there are no others around in swimming - so don't have enough knowledge to proceed. We go back to the ute and take it for a short drive along this beach instead - stunning.Read more

  • Gregories FPNP

    October 23, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

Arrrr this spot even has a sign showing that its suitable for snorkling. Can see straight away it is a sheltered bay - and that it's bay has weeds in it which could be helpful for marine life to be present. Also, their are others out there snorkling already. We get ourselves organised to snorkel and once in the water we realise it's going to be very shallow (the tide is on its way out). Still fun swimming over the weeds, small rocks and shells - at first I wasn't seeing any fish, but once I got acustom to the environment I was seeing quite a few - just very silvery blending in fish. All different types and sizes from very small to quite decent size.
Stayed in the water for about 1/2 an hour before getting cold.

  • Herald Bight FPNP

    October 23, 2024, Indian Ocean ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

  • Big Lagoon FPNP

    October 23, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

Our last 'Port of call' today in this National Park. This one is a main camping spot - with plenty of caravans out here (they do well getting them here along these sandy narrow tracks). Again, can see why it is popular, another beautiful spot - a real step into coastal quiet living. Nicely set up with shelters and some walk ways. The camping spots in this National Park have well maintained bush toilets too.
Roger's been doing the driving so far today, so it's my chance to have a drive in the sand as we head back now to Denham. We stop before leaving the park, at their tyre reinflating station. What an enjoyable day we've had here. Hope we get the chance to visit again one day....
