    Uruguay with Inés: Montevideo

    September 27, 2023 in Uruguay ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Mark and I arrived in Montevideo and were picked up by Inés, Tabea's friend from university. We had dinner with her family and the next day she took us to Punta del Este.

  • Punta del Este

    September 28, 2023 in Uruguay ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Punta del Este is a beach town - akin to Miami in Florida. Imagine high rises, parties and full beaches in the summer. In spring though it is completely dead. We stayed one night with Inés in Punta del Este, and then we went to La Barra. A more hippie town outside of Punta - there we realised we were not pro surfers after doing a surf lesson. Mark stood up on the board though!Read more

  • Cabo Polonio

    October 1, 2023 in Uruguay ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

Cabo is a very special town- you need to take a dune buggy for 7km to get to the town and it's off the grid. Obviously, there is wifi, running water, etc. - but it's gorgeous and deserted in the off season.
Sadly the sea lion colony is heavily affected by the bird flu and we saw many dying or dead sea lions on the beach.
We also met a very nice English couple, who we shared food and walks with, who are travelling for a year.

  • Colonia

    Oct 4–5, 2023 in Uruguay ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Our final stop in Uruguay was in a small town called Colonia del Sacramento - one of the oldest towns of Uruguay, first founded by Portuguese settlers and then eventually taken over by the Spanish. After a good day in the city we took the ferry in the evening to Buenos Aires.Read more

  • Buenos Aires

    Oct 5–6, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Went to visit Ari before heading down to Patagonia. We gate-crashed Cami's (Ari's) daughter's 11th birthday and stayed with Ari. Homemade empanadas from Su, Ari's mum, the first evening, then the next day our first parrillada - essentially just a HUGE amount of meat. We also traded our dollars in a "cueva" (cave) into pesos - the government artificially fixes the rate and so to get a better exchange rate you need to use western union or change in dodgy cuevas.Read more

  • Bariloche v1

    October 6, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ 🌬 8 °C

We stayed 4 nights in Bariloche, and had to get money, sunglasses etc. Many errands to run before we headed out for a few day trips and also met up with my housemate from London, Matteo! After having spent sooo much money on food in Uruguay we ended up cooking at our hostel the whole time.Read more

  • Colonia Suiza (day trip)

    October 7, 2023 in Argentina

A nice little loop called Llao Llao takes you to Colonia Suiza, a former Swiss colony, aka amusement park (at least that's how Mark and I dubbed it! Not very Swiss in my opinion, and way too many people.
We also went climbing for the first time in our trip and found some nice views whilst doing so!

  • Cerro Ventana

    October 8, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

The next day we ventured out to hike up a small mountain. Soooo windy!! But very beautiful!
I can only upload one video per post, so adding one of the next day where I learned the hard way that an Argentinian bidet just shoots water up and I soaked the whole bathroom floor to ceiling .Read more

  • Siete Lagos (7 Lakes)

    October 10, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

First day on the road! So many people told us the seven lakes route would be epic - it was beautiful, but similar to the Alps. We went from Villa La Angostura (best pasta pictured in photo) to Villa Traful, where we stayed one night, and then headed up to San Martin. Enjoy a video of Mark demonstrating the free gym equipment in Argentina!
And soooo many birds of prey!

  • San Martin

    Oct 11–13, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We continued driving and ended up in San Martín in probably my favorite hostel up until now! A young couple turned her grandparents house into a b'n'b - such a pretty and comfortable place!
We hiked up Cerro Colorado, found a dog on the summit at 1700m and slid down on plastic bags a little bit!!Read more

  • Volcan Lanín

    October 12, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

I completely crossed through Mark's plans to go hike up Lanín - I thought a two-day alpine mountain excursion might be pushing it for my leg :D
But Lanín was beautiful- what a perfect volcano!!
At the beach we met some lovely dogs who watched us swim and we went for a short walk to stretch our legs as it was a long drive there!Read more

  • Valle Encantado

    Oct 13–14, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Soooo.... I had read about this EPIC climbing spot where you need to take a boat over to rocks on the other side. Mark and I showed up at 8pm when it was getting dark and decided it was tll cold and too dark to camp. We then ended up staying in a lovely family "gasthaus", where the owner gave us a whole list of climbing maps in the area, looked like a movie star from one of the wild west movies, and who answered "si, bueno" for almost every single question!
Anyhow, next day we hitchhiked across the river on a canoe and then spent the day climbing. Beautiful area, even though the climbing itself was probably too difficult for us! In the evening Mark had the glorious plan that he would ferry me over with the luggage, take the canoe back, and then swim over afterwards. The water was sooo cold that he spent about half an hour jumping around, getting into the water, and convincing himself he could do it, before the rest of the people finally arrived and took him over.

  • PIEDRA PARADA!!!

    Oct 15–19, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Piedra Parada is a canyon in the middle of the desert... there is nothing, apart from a campsite and tons of climbable rock. The famous Petzl rock trip went there in 2012 (that's how Mark learned about it), basically a bunch of climbers go somewhere and bolt/put up new climbing routes in a fairly new climbing sector. Look it up on Youtube: PETZL ROCTRIP ARGENTINA 2012 https://youtu.be/QllWNEGBKic?si=gjgdwvaijiZNx2OQ
Well, we ended up driving over a dirt road for 100km with our trusted Fiat Cronos, and ended up in this beautiful place for 4 days. Insanely cold nights at the beginning (0/ -1 degrees), and 35 degrees by the time we left - I guess that's a typical desert climate.
We met a young Chilean couple who we climbed with for a day, who own a climbing gym in Chile Chico, a town in the South.
Both Mark and I had eaten something dodgy a few days before and so the first two days we were VERY happy about the toilet conveniently located in the middle of the canyon.

  • PUERTO MADRYN

    Oct 19–23, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After a heck of a drive across the middle of Argentina, we arrived in the seaside town of Puerto Madryn. A few stats from the drive over:

    - 700km driving
    - 10 hours behind the wheel
    - buzzard eagles, an ostrich, condors, guanacos, flamingos were seen
    - 1 porridge stop
    - 138 potholes hit
    - no flat tyres

After such a successful crossing, we met up with our dear (but new) friends Albi and Kit.

We drove onto the worlds largest peninsula which, when you are used to Portland, feels about the size of Europe. We saw penguins, right whales up close and personal from a boat, an owl, an armadillo and maybe an orca (probably not).

A couple of amazing tapas meals and one hell of a sunset which looked like a dystopian landscape. Sunrise breakfast watching the whales wake up and everything was amazing.

  • El Bolson

    October 23, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

    El Bolson Round 2

We found ourselves on autopilot after crossing back from Puerto Madryn and were welcomed back to Odile by the German Hippy, Marcel. Back into the wooden lodge-like apartment and settling in by the roaring fire!

We hiked up to a false summit of a false summit (delayed because we looked after 5 kittens for 1 hour because mum had been eaten by a puma…).

As per usual, we sledged down in the snow on a plastic bag, the inaugural meeting of the Society of Homemade Inappropriate Toboggans (S.H.I.T).

We hiked the next day up to Rio Azul and took a fresh dip before heading up to a sketchy canyon jump and some cool caves.

The next few days were rained off - so we sheltered with Marcel and the dogs and the fire. Snow started and we finally got on the move back to Bariloche. The crossing was like when Hannibal crossed the alps - but less elephants and more Fiat Chronos’
