  • Exploration drive and Newberry Coldara

    September 30, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

We were going to hike Green Lake, but rain changed our plans. We did a drive to explore the cascades. We went to Elk Lake lodge and talked with a nice couple that worked there, that were converting a school bus into a camper.
We eventually went to Newbury Coldara national park. I had never been there, but now plan to go back to camp there. We visited Paulina Lake lodge, looked at one of the campgrounds, hiked the Large Obsidian flow, drove to the top of Paulina Peak, and visited Paulina Falls.
That evening, we sat around the campfire with the owners of 2 T@B campers that were in the campground. Surprisingly, the couple that owned one of the T@Bs knew Kevin and Linda.

  • Jordanelle State Park, UTAH

    October 2, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

This was a travel day to Jordanelle state park in Utah, near Park City. Very windy and thunder storms threatening, so we moved from our reserved site to a more sheltered site. It is off season for all the water sports, so campground is pretty quiet, making it easy to change sites.
Visited Park City in the evening for dinner and walk around. We bought tickets at the Egyptian Theater for the next day, Wednesday, Holloween "Thriller" dance show. Looks like a fun time; updates to follow.

  • Salt Lake City and Park City

    October 3, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We discovered the teardrop had a broken battery terminal connector and had to stop at Napa to get a replacement part.
We visited Temple Square around noon time, after having lunch outside the old courthouse.
In the evening we saw a "Thriller" Holloween themed dance show that was really entertaining.
We drove back to the campground in a thunder storm and got wet getting into our trailer tent. The trailer vent was open, so the inside also got a little wet.

  • Hiked the Narrows in Zion Canyon

    October 5, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We water flow and temperature in the Virgin River was acceptable and it was, 57 cfs and 62 degrees. The ranger suggested having boots and a pole for hiking the Narrows, so we rented them. Although they were nice, we probably didn't need the boots, but the pole was optimal.
We took the shuttle to the end of the canyon and walked on the path for a mile until it ended. This is were we started hiking through the river, which we did for 3 hours before turning around and returning.
The was a great, "must do" hike. I'm so happy conditions were right for us to do it.

  • Rainy day in Zion

    October 6, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

It was raining all day, so we didn't want to do any big hikes like Angels Landing. We took the shuttle to Zion Lodge, a short hike to Lower Emerald Pool (path to Upper Emerald Pool was blocked by a rock slide), then a walk to the view point for the Court of the Patriarchs, which are 3 mountain peaks, and then took a walk along the river back to our campsite.
Hoping we will have better conditions tomorrow.

  • North Rim Viewpoints

    October 9, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

We did a short hike from the campground to the lodge, from there it is a short walk to Bright Angel Point. In the afternoon we drove to Cape Royal and Point Imperial, which is at 8800 ft elevation and cold.
Each of these viewpoints provided great views of the Grand Canyon.

  • Hiked North Kaibab trail

    October 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

We hiked the North Kaibab trail down to Redstone bridge, 2150 ft below the rim. This is a 5.2 mile round trip that took > 4 hrs.
The mule tours also use this trail, so we had to deal with poop on the trail.
We saw a few runners that were doing the rim to rim to rim, which means they started on the south rim, ran to the north rim, then ran back to the south rim. That is insane.
Other were taking 3 days to hike from North Rim to South Rim.

  • Travel day to Flagstaff, AZ

    October 11, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

Left on a cold and wet day. It is a long drive around the Grand Canyon to get to Flagstaff. Storm clouds were encountered along the way.
It was not as cold in Flagstaff as on the North Rim, but it was still chilly, probably because Flagstaff is at 7000 ft elevation, which I didn't realize.Read more

  • Travel to Sedona and more rain

    October 13, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Traveled on 89A to Sedona and along the way stopped at the Oak Creek Canyon Vista, which is just before the switchback in the road drops into the canyon. The views of the canyon were wonderful.
By the time we got to Sedona, the rain had started, so we dropped off the trailer and went out for lunch. We then went to a fun local brewery to watch the Oregon Ducks win in overtime.Read more

  • Boynton Canyon hike and Summit Viewpoint

    October 14, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We hike Boynton Canyon trail in the morning. This is supposed to be a vortex site. It is a beautiful area, but I didn't sense any mystical energy :-)
There is a short spur to a Vista viewpoint near the beginning of the trail.
Hiking into the canyon, we skirted a resort at the mouth of the canyon, then hiked to the end for a wonderful view of the canyon and lunch.
After that hike, we went on the airport road and did a short walk to Summit viewpoint. This was a great spot to see all of Sedona. We could see threatening storm clouds coming our way, so we went back to the brewery we were at the day before and enjoyed a beer and watched some football.

  • West Fork hike and Chapel of Holy Cross

    October 15, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

The best hike in the Sedona area is the West Fork trail of Oak Creek. Beautiful views of the canyon walls. To make it more interesting, we had to cross the stream 13+ times on the hike, but since the water was fairly low, we were able to stay dry.
In the afternoon, we visited the Chapel of the Holy Cross. A beautiful place with a great view.

  • Camping between Ocean, road, and trains

    October 18, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

San Elijo SP campground was stricked about not checking in before 2pm. We couldn't park at hotel hosting ultimate 50th anniversary and tournament parking wanted to charge us double ($20) because we were towing a trailer. So we found a park across the road from the campground and walked around until 2pm.
Our campsite is right by the road with train tracks on the other side of the road. Trains come through regularly and blast their horns.
In the evening, we went to the 50th anniversary reception in the courtyard of the hotel. We only knew a handful of people there, but it was a very good time.

  • 50 Years and Still Flying

    October 20, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

In the morning, there was a session at the hotel called "50 Years and Still Flying". It discussed different aspects of Ultimate, including Ultimate charities, personal impacts of Ultimate, and the initial creation story of Ultimate. I didn't know that Joel Silver, the producer of Die Hard and The Matrix, was one of the original creators. There was also a video message from the president of William and Mary College, another alumni of Ultimate.
We also visited the archive room, which had discs, shirts, and accounts of the history of Ultimate.
In the afternoon we watched some semi-final games. These games were at a high level of competition and were very close.
That night we attended the Ultimate dance party, which had a fun band with a horn section. It was great fun; lots of dancing.

Women's finals were next, with S.F. Fury beating Boston Rude Squad.
In the men's finals, N.Y. PoNY beat S.F. Revolver.
All weekend long, it was great to see the high degree of skill and stamina at this level of play.
