Oregon Caves National Monument

We drove to the Oregon Caves and was able to get on an 11am tour, instead of the 3pm tour I reserved. It was rainy and the lodge was closed, so there wasn't much to do if we had to wait.
There was an old couple that had to leave after a short walk into the cave. They were warned, but it didn't sink in. They never would have made it through the whole tour.
After the tour, we hiked up to a viewpoint before leaving for our campsite in Grants Pass.Les mer

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

We travelled to Jedediah Smith state park and setup camp next to the nice couple that was also across from us in the Burlington campground. Since we were only staying 1 night, we didn't setup the tent or canopy.
We followed the rangers suggestions and hiked a portion of the Mill Creek trail, then stopped to walk the Stout Memorial Grove.Les mer

We did the short walk around Founders Grove and saw the big Founders tree.
We then went to two places along Bull Creek. At Roosevelt Loop, we tried to find the trail that lead along the river to the Big Tree loop, but after bushwaking through the river for a while, we gave up and decided to just drive to the Big Tree loop, where we did see another big tree.Les mer

Schramsberg Vineyard wine tasting tour

We toured the caves of Schramsberg Vineyard and tasted some very good sparkling wines (champagne).
The wines were too pricey for our budget, so we didn't buy any. The tour was pricey too, but we splurged for the experience.
There are pictures of their wines being served at special white house presidential dinners.
It was one of the first wineries established in Napa valley.
All the wine bottles are stacked by hand and can be seen in the pictures.Les mer

Greystone and Pride Mountain winery

Visited Greystone in the morning, which use to the Christian Brothers winery and is now owned by CIA (Culinary Institute of America). We did the tour and learned how earthquakes damaged tunnels and buildings.
In the afternoon, we did the Pride Mountain winery tour. Paul was our tour guide and he was great; knowledgeable and funny. There were 2 tour representatives from France and a Canadian couple from Quebec, so they could talk French to each other.
We learned how the property strattles both Napa county and Sonama counties, which causes problems with labeling, but they found clever solutions. We walked through the caves and tasted good wine.Les mer

Glacier Point and Sentinel Dome

We drove an hour from the Yosemite Valley campground to Glacier Point, where we could look directly down on the valley. An amazing view!!!!
We could also see Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls, which we had hiked the day before.
On the way back, we stopped to take a short hike to Sentinel Dome, which also had fantastic 360 degree view from the top.Les mer

Ultimate Championship Finals were played at Mira Mesa HS and broadcast on ESPN 3.
In the mixed division, we watched Philadelphia Amp beat Wash D.C. Space Heaters.
Women's finals were next, with S.F. Fury beating Boston Rude Squad.
In the men's finals, N.Y. PoNY beat S.F. Revolver.
All weekend long, it was great to see the high degree of skill and stamina at this level of play.Les mer

50 Years and Still Flying

In the morning, there was a session at the hotel called "50 Years and Still Flying". It discussed different aspects of Ultimate, including Ultimate charities, personal impacts of Ultimate, and the initial creation story of Ultimate. I didn't know that Joel Silver, the producer of Die Hard and The Matrix, was one of the original creators. There was also a video message from the president of William and Mary College, another alumni of Ultimate.
We also visited the archive room, which had discs, shirts, and accounts of the history of Ultimate.
In the afternoon we watched some semi-final games. These games were at a high level of competition and were very close.
That night we attended the Ultimate dance party, which had a fun band with a horn section. It was great fun; lots of dancing.Les mer

Camping between Ocean, road, and trains

San Elijo SP campground was stricked about not checking in before 2pm. We couldn't park at hotel hosting ultimate 50th anniversary and tournament parking wanted to charge us double ($20) because we were towing a trailer. So we found a park across the road from the campground and walked around until 2pm.
Our campsite is right by the road with train tracks on the other side of the road. Trains come through regularly and blast their horns.
In the evening, we went to the 50th anniversary reception in the courtyard of the hotel. We only knew a handful of people there, but it was a very good time.Les mer

West Fork hike and Chapel of Holy Cross

The best hike in the Sedona area is the West Fork trail of Oak Creek. Beautiful views of the canyon walls. To make it more interesting, we had to cross the stream 13+ times on the hike, but since the water was fairly low, we were able to stay dry.
In the afternoon, we visited the Chapel of the Holy Cross. A beautiful place with a great view.Les mer

Boynton Canyon hike and Summit Viewpoint

We hike Boynton Canyon trail in the morning. This is supposed to be a vortex site. It is a beautiful area, but I didn't sense any mystical energy :-)
There is a short spur to a Vista viewpoint near the beginning of the trail.
Hiking into the canyon, we skirted a resort at the mouth of the canyon, then hiked to the end for a wonderful view of the canyon and lunch.
After that hike, we went on the airport road and did a short walk to Summit viewpoint. This was a great spot to see all of Sedona. We could see threatening storm clouds coming our way, so we went back to the brewery we were at the day before and enjoyed a beer and watched some football.Les mer

Traveled on 89A to Sedona and along the way stopped at the Oak Creek Canyon Vista, which is just before the switchback in the road drops into the canyon. The views of the canyon were wonderful.
By the time we got to Sedona, the rain had started, so we dropped off the trailer and went out for lunch. We then went to a fun local brewery to watch the Oregon Ducks win in overtime.Les mer

This morning, we took the ranger tour of the "island" in Walnut Canyon. Cliff dwellings from 1100-1250 are here. It is a very unique and interesting place.

Left on a cold and wet day. It is a long drive around the Grand Canyon to get to Flagstaff. Storm clouds were encountered along the way.
It was not as cold in Flagstaff as on the North Rim, but it was still chilly, probably because Flagstaff is at 7000 ft elevation, which I didn't realize.Les mer
