    Packing for porter - 9 kilos ! Sleeping bag , ski jacket and pants and wet jacket is 6! Oh well lucky I didn’t bring any deodorant ! Think the bar must get lively given the skinned crocodile

    Day one of hike to Mandara

    So day one Starting at gate to park through the rain forest to the first station just missing a serious rain shower - accompanied by some homely hailstorms .     Day three of hike Horombo hut

    Well today is acclimatise day - after we do a hike up to test how we are feeling - up to 4200m and a visit to zebra rock and then rest up as tomorrow it’s a hike to summit base camp at Kibo - where we get a short rest and a meal and a short sleep and then 12midnight the final push !     Day five -midnight ascent til 11am

    So we ascend at midnight and temps are falling . It’s five top layers and three on bottom as it’s going down to -20! The climb is a bitch ! We zig zag up the outer crater rim - it’s like moon walk plus marathon - 5km straight up ! We are all breathing deeply the light air - we reach Gillman point ! Then it’s another 1km to the highest point Uhuru Peak - 2 from 5 make it ! ME!! Puffing very heavily ! Then it’s down almost ski-ing the scree ! Knackered !     Day four of hike - up to summit base

    So it’s up for breakfast and 1000m and 5-6 hr hike up to Kibo camp through semi desert alpine desert - scree rock and blast - and up. we see the other more extreme peak of Mawenzi - not climbing that !     Day five Noon onwards

    After checking our stories with other roommates we then walk back from summit through the alpine desert to camp - it’s another 10km but sun is shining , legs are aching !
    We are knackered
    We get home and rest and wash. Dinner is early as tomorrow we walk home at 7am. - it’s another 21km to the gate !Read more

    Day six - the trek back to the entrance

    We are up and we have slept! It’s early as we breakfast on porridge , eggs and sort of pancakes . We set off with coats on as it’s blowing a gale ! Some porters sing for Koreans ! Soon we take coats off as we are sheltered from wind! It’s a slog so I put on my music - first random song - joe strummer Yalla Yalla - very zen - lets go ! So 21km passes slowly Ivan and me out front and it’s a peaceful walk back to gate through the tropical forest and then it’s over . We lunch , we get Wi-fi , we get farewell singing from our porters, we tip and get to hotel. At hotel it’s a beer , a shower , a shave , a long bath and rest the feet ! We drink beer til dinner and it’s bed at 9! Strange dreams - and there is a weird devil like regular scream from outside - i am told it’s an odd cow but I think it’s my feet ! SleepRead more

    Day seven - homeward

    Awake my feet and legs are stiff and sore ! We breakfast and say our goodbyes . I leave at 10 for KIA For a flight at 2 - then it’s Nairobi and a long wait till 11 and flight home . This time is the other way around - it is the destination and not the travel !Read more
