Holy Land Pilgrimage

I am going on a pilgrimage around the Holy Land visiting places such as Jerusalem, Nazareth etc. I will also be spending a week in Jordan visiting the treasury in Petra and the Dead Sea. Baca lagi

  • Jaffa

    Our first stop on our pilgrimage was Jaffa which was the first port city in Israel. We spent some time exploring St Peter’s Basilica which has some extraordinary Stain Glass Windows. We also saw the Mediterranean Sea and the old light house. As well at that we also saw Simon of Tanners house, who was believed to be St Peter’s friend while he was spreading the word and teachings of Jesus.Baca lagi

  • Bethlehem

    After Tel Aviv we headed to Bethlehem. We had a very special mass in the the cave of St Jerome who was believed to have translated the bible from Greek to Latin. We then went to have a look at the Church of the Nativity but it was too busy so we are going to go back tomorrow afternoon.Baca lagi

    After having mass at the Shepherd’s field we then visited the Israel Museum. Here we viewed the model of Old Jerusalem which was absolutely amazing. Our tour guide explained how Jerusalem has changed over time and used the model to allow us to visualise this. We then went and viewed the Dead Sea Scrolls which were found in a cave in Qumran by some shepherds. These were the first recorded written text of the Old Testament. This was such a historically rich place where I learnt so much about the history of this wonderful place.Baca lagi

  • Ein Karem

    Today we visited a lovely little town in Jerusalem called Ein Karem. Here we visited two churches one was the Church of the Visitation which is built on the location where Mary Visited her cousin Elizabeth while pregnant. It was a stunning church with lot of great religious artifacts and images. After that we journeyed to the Church of St John the Baptist who was Elizabeth’s son. We all know why he is so famous as he was the one who baptised our Lord Jesus Christ.Baca lagi

  • Bethlehem

    Our last adventure for today was going back to visit the Church of the Nativity which is exactly where Jesus was born. It was a stunning Church with Lots of Icons, religious artifacts and paintings. It was a fantastic experience to venerate on the spot where Jesus lay in his manger during the Nativity. It bought the christmas story alive!Baca lagi

  • Caesarea

    Day 3 of my Holy Land Pilgrimage began with a 2 hour bus trip to Caesarea which was run by King Herod back In Jesus’ time. Here I saw some amazing Roman ruins such as an amphitheater, hippodrome (chariot track) and the foundations of King Herod’s Palace. His pool was still able to be seen in the ruins of his palace, as well as the room where they believed he held Peter after he was arrested. After that I went and viewed the ruins of the Roman aqueducts that fed Caesarea it’s water. This place was unbelievable!Baca lagi

  • Akko or Acre

    Finally today we stopped at a place called Acre which was the site of the old Crusader tunnels and buildings. This was a fantastic experience and I learnt a lot about the three crusades to the holy land. All failed expect the third and final. The crusades were a very important event in the history of Israel.Baca lagi

  • Caesarea Phillippi

    Our first site today was Caesarea Phillippi which was where Jesus asked his disciples “Who do they say I am?” It was here Peter responded with “the messiah”. Jesus also gave Peter the title of “the rock” at this location as well. It was the ruin of a Roman temple and was called the Gates of Hell. What a spectacular place with the ruins still so intact. The river that comes from this place also joins up with the River Jordan which we all know is where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist.Baca lagi

  • Capernaum

    This was the place where Jesus spent 3 years teaching in the Synagogue. Here we looked at the remains of St Peter’s house as well as the Synagogue where Jesus would have spent a lot of his time. This is the remains of a 1st Century city and would have been a major Yeah business hub at the time. It has been proven that both Jesus and Peter lived in at some point in their lives.Baca lagi

  • Cana

    We visited The Sanctuary of our lord’s first miracle, which was the place where he turned water in to wine at the Wedding of Cana. The married couples in our pilgrimage group renewed their vows here. We also saw some first century ruins which the church was built on which they believe are the ruins of first century Cana. Have a look at how big the wine jars were! One of these jars can hold 25 gallons which is approximately 100 litres. At the wedding they had 6 of these jars.Baca lagi

  • Church of the Annunciation

    After visiting the Church of Cana we drove in to Nazareth which is where Jospeh and Mary spent most of their lives. Here we visited the Church of the Annunciation which is where the Angel appeared to Mary asking her to have a child and name him Jesus. We celebrated mass here and also viewed first century ruins of Mary’s house. The basilica was built on these ruins.Baca lagi

  • Zippori

    The city of Zippori in Jesus’ time was a great city built by King Herod. It also became a templer fort at one stage in its history. Here we sure 1st century Roman ruins of the town such as their market place. They also had a Roman mansion or villa with a very intact mosaic. This allowed historians to figure out that the villa was owned by a very rich man because of the detail in the mosaic. We climbed the crusader fort and saw the spectacular view of the Galilee.Baca lagi
