Royal carriages were coloured green. No one else could use this colour green. It was for royalty only. And the importance of the royalty was known by the colour of the wheels. Black wheels indicated passengers were not that high up the royal chain. Gold wheels meant the king or queen were in the carriage.Read more

Boat stopped this morning at Durnstein. Beautiful quaint village in the countryside of Austria. Reminded me of the old parts of France.
This is where Richard the Lion Heart was held prisoner in the castle.Read more

  • Durnsrein/ Wachau/ Melk

    August 9, 2017 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Left Durnstein at lunchtime. Cruising through the Wachau Valley to Melk. Ainsley and a group of bikers are actually biking through the valley to meet us at Melk. Too hot for me....and too bloody unfit so I sat in the pool on the deck and watched her bike past. Arrived at Melk about 4pm and did a quick walking tour through the town and around the famous Melk Abby.. originally owned by Bavarian count Sizzo who gifted it to the Benedictine monks when they moved to Venice to live. Beautiful view from top of the hill leading down to the Abby and the township.Read more

    Linz 10th August 2017.
Sailed all night and arrived in Linz this morning. Busy day today. Got the bus to Linz then had a special treat and got on the original restored royal train from Linz to Salzburg. All the carriages were different colours... very royal looking. We had gold carriage of course and very appropriately had Princess Elizabeth's picture at our table. Spent a couple of hours exploring the town of Salzburg...home of Mozart and the ^Sound of Music^. Had a great fortress on the hill called the Hohensalzburg Fortress. This Fortress was never taken.Read more

  • Salzburg / Germany / Passau

    August 11, 2017 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Crossed the border into Germany. Took the train again and now heading to Passau to re meet our boat. Had a lovely surprise on this trip with opera singers entertaining us. Singing songs from The Sound of Music etc. Awesome and very memorable. Disappointed to find out a few discrepancies in the movie of the The Sound of Music and the actual facts. She was 27 .He was 42. They did not escape over the hills to Switzerland as over the hills would have lead them straight to Hitlers hideaway called Eagles Nest. They just popped down the road and got a mini train to freedom. Also they had 2 more children and there landed up being 9 children in total.Read more

Hi kid. I've attached some interior photos of the boat. Quiet nice but after being on a big cruise boat this is really different. Mostly old people on this boat...lot older. Sometime feels like a rest home where everyone looks forward to meal times. We have done all the outings so far. Bed is smaller then the hotels but comfy. They clean our room twice a day. Staff are friendly and professional.
Must admit the food is superb and presentation is fancy. We got invited to the Chef's table last night (similar to captains table). Got served 7 course dinner.....amazing flavours. We are blossoming.
Tomorrow we have to change ships. Apparently because of the river levels we can't proceed in this boat to Amsterdam. We are changing to the sister ship Ama Venita which is exactly the same as this boat Ama Reina.

  • Germany / Regensburg

    August 11, 2017 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    11th August 2017.
Arrived in Regensburg this afternoon. A real Bavarian town. Had a Bavarian lunch and staff got dressed in Bavarian costumes. Quite neat. Weather is cloudy and overcast with showers. Went for a little walk through the town. It is known as the ^ Medieval wounder of Germany^. This old town suffered hardly any damage in the second world War. It's now part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage.
The last night on this boat. Transfer to our new boat tomorrow. Had a great night with a guy playing an electric violin. Graham was a dick and got up and danced the Irish jig. What a laugh. All these boring old farts. Had a few drinks. Last ones to go to bed.....as usual.

Also here is The Burg Castle built in 11th century with walls completed in 1452. Very big castle with moats and defence towers. A lot of Nuremberg was destroyed in WW11 but restored to original standards by funds from USA after the war. Millions given to restore this city and many others in Europe from the ^Marshall Plan^. This stronghold was never taken.Read more

FYI. This is where the famous Nuremberg trials were held at courtroom 600 for trials of Nazi criminals.
During this tour I got the feeling the guides were trying to get us to understand or excuse the reason for how the Third Reich and Hitler got to power. They reakon Hitlers Nazi Rally Grounds were part of the reason people got to believe in him. Hitler tried to build the Rally Grounds to be bigger and better then the Roman's coliseum but it never got completed.Read more

Last night we left Nuremberg and sailed to Bamberg. It's raining and we are staying here only till lunchtime so have decided to be lazy and stay on board. Apparently this is where Levi Strauss was born. Levi jeans with copper studs on the pockets. Decided to get my haircut....nothing flash!
From here we leave the Danube and go through the Main-Danube-Canal for the quaint River Maine.
Sitting on the deck watching the world go by. Very narrow along this river so far. We have 32 locks to go through along this stretch of water

This morning is a beautiful day for walking. Set off to Rothenberg and have found this to be the nicest town I have seen in Germany so far. It is still surrounded by its old city wall and is full of charm. The town is home to Germanys famous (and original) Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas store.Read more
