• St Peters Basillica

    May 14, 2022 in Vatican City ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We had the absolute pleasure of visiting St Peter's Basillica at the Vatican on Saturday. They did not allow photos inside but with everyone disregarding this Emily managed to snap a few photos. This was one of the most beautiful and stunning Basillica's we've seen. After seeing the first floor we went down into the tomb where many popes and saints have been laid to rest. St. Peter's tomb is alleged near the west end of a complex of mausoleums that date between about AD 130 and AD 300.Read more

In Rome three triumphal arches have survived: the Arch of Titus (AD 81), with relief sculpture of his triumph over Jerusalem; the Arch of Septimius Severus (203–205), commemorating his victory over the Parthians; and the Arch of Constantine (312), a composite product, decorated with reused material from the times of Domitian, Trajan, and Hadrian. We were fortunate enough to see all 3 today, they are only all about a half mile to mile apart.Read more

  • Colosseum

    May 13, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

The Colosseum's real name is the Flavian Amphitheater. Named after the Emperor who built it. The name was an error by those who came later. Before the Amphitheater was built, a giant bronze statue of Nero (commissioned by Nero) was built, called the The Colossus of Nero. He named it after the World Wonder, Colossus of Rhodes. The statue in Rome, was destroyed to build the amphitheater. Later historians found references to the statue and where it stood, and thought it to be the name of the now famous Colosseum.Read more

  • Scala Santa

    May 11, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This morning we were able do something unexpected. The Scale Santa are the steps that Jesus walked up when he was persecuted by Pontius Pilate.

We had heard that they were closed because the marble steps had become too worn. Apparently they covered the steps with wood and are open again.

The building is filled with beautiful frescos (see second picture) on the walls and ceiling.

Lastly, while there we are told the stairs were originally in Jerusalem, but were relocated to Rome by Emperor Constantine's mother. Fun fact.
