  • Huhnersberg to Gmund

    11. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

    14km/255m ascent/563m descent/3.5 hours
An easy day of walking but still very hot in the full sun. Gmünd is a pretty Artists’ town but things were still fairly slow and sleepy because it’s only the beginning of their summer holiday season. Once again we are the only guests in this grand old hotel and it is the most luxurious accommodation we’ve had so far.Weiterlesen

  • Gmund to Seeboden

    12. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    14.8 km/ 4.5 hours/ 310m descent/460m ascent
We really made the most of our last relatively easy and short stage.
It was hot and sunny for our few hours of walking but unfortunately another storm came through just as we arrived in Seeboden which put a stop to our swimming plans (temp of lake water is around 24 degrees in Summer). The weather cleared in the evening and we enjoyed dinner (beautiful fish from the lake) at a lovely lakeside restaurant, watching the sun go down over the water.Weiterlesen

  • Seeboden to Alexanderhutte

    13. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ 🌫 7 °C

    22km/8 hours/1670m ascent/466m descent
We walked up into the clouds today with wonderful views of the lake below and the mountains all around. When we arrived at a mountain hut at midday the owner suggested that we might need to take a shortcut because of a forecast storm. The mountain Gods held off just enough for us to continue on the 2100m ridge line. It was very exposed, cold and rainy but a great adventure. Arriving at our final destination, Alexanderhutte was a wonderful and welcome sight and we retreated out of the rain into a warm cosy room to hot soup and, of course, schnapps. We then spent the evening dining with Bruce and Isabel watching (through the big picture windows) the clouds passing below us and revealing beautiful views - as if we were in an aeroplane.Weiterlesen

  • Dobriach to Petodnighutte

    15. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

    17 km/7 hours/ 1166m ascent/124m descent
We tried to think of today as a ‘rest day’ ambling along 17km of relatively easy walking, after yesterday’s assault.
We are sleeping again tonight in a delightful mountain hut which is 90 years old (including the furniture).Weiterlesen

  • Petodnighutte to Falkerthaus

    16. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

    19km/1028m ascent/1113m descent/ 8.5 hours
A demanding day of walking through the heart of the Nockberge Biosphere reserve today, including 3 hard summits of more than 2000 metres. Once again our hard work was rewarded with a wonderful meal of fresh trout caught 10 minutes beforehand.Weiterlesen

  • Bad Kleinkirchheim to Arriach

    18. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

    23km/ 1223m ascent/1365m descent/ 8 hours
We had a slower start this morning before heading straight up our continuous 1223m ascent (2 1/2 times Mt Lofty). We had a cable car running directly above us which somehow seemed to make it even more of a hard slog! We stopped for lunch at the cable car restaurant which was perched on top of the mountain then tackled the 1366m continuous descent.Weiterlesen

  • Arriach to Gerlitzen Alpe

    19. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

    15km/1245m ascent/218m descent
An easier day today with plenty of ascent but virtually no descent ......until we arrived at our destination and realised we could take a ski lift then cable car to drop straight down the other side of the mountain to the lake below us and return. It was another exciting and spectacular mini-adventure. The views from here are surreal and my favourite so far. We watched many paragliders jumping off the mountain and gliding down below us. We also met a lovely Italian man and walked and talked with him for a couple of hours.Weiterlesen

  • Gerlitzen Alpe to Ossiach

    20. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    18km/ 83m ascent/1481m descent
Rudi and I managed to get lost/detour for a while today but we managed to get back on the trail with the help of the App.
It was another warm day but we were delighted to discover our hotel was right next to the lake swimming area (most of the water access is private). We had a beautiful swim out to the pontoon and later in the evening we sat on the water’s edge, at a lovely restaurant, watching the sun go down behind the mountain and the lights appear around the lake.Weiterlesen

  • Ossiach to Velden

    21. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

    17km/542m ascent/603m descent
This morning we had a few hours of walking up a rocky gorge with a small creek running through it - it was so cool and peaceful even though it was another challenging ascent. We then managed to end up with a naughty/crazy/lovely dog following us for an hour and we tried to get him back home with our 2 German commands ‘no’ and ‘here’ - eventually a cafe owner managed to sort him out for us. When we arrived in Velden on Lake Wörthersee it was absolutely alive with action - it was their annual Euro Sports Car event. We sat at the iconic Schlosshotel Velden and watched Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, McLaren F1 and most impressive, the Rolls Royce Wraith with orange leather interior ( and the owner was a hipster ranger)! We ate dinner at a restaurant on the lake promenade and it was like being on the Grand Prix track ......oh and the lake was impressive too.Weiterlesen

  • Velden to Faaker See/Baumgartner Hohe

    22. Juni 2018 in Österreich ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

    24km/637m ascent/208m descent
We woke to the sound of solid rain, which had continued all through the night, and we really thought we were facing a long wet day of wearing waterproofs. We started walking in some drizzling rain but it cleared within an hour and we were delighted to walk in fine weather for the rest of the day.
It was another day of varied landscape including the incredibly blue waters of Lake Faaker See.

  • Baumgartnerhohe to Kranjska Gora

    23. Juni 2018 in Slowenien ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    24 km/ 1293m ascent/ 1400m descent/ rating: Difficult
A very spectacular day to finish. We had perfect weather of clear blue skies and great visibility. It was the most challenging day in terms of technical skills required for the climb and the descent. We watched a helicopter perform a mountain rescue from the trail we had passed an hour earlier and we were very aware that even a relatively minor injury would require medi-vac. We were also surprised to see Bear Warning signs - a little more hard core than the Cow Warning signs we were accustomed to! We had the most perfect lunch stop at the top of the mountain looking onto the Julian Alps in Slovenia which will be our playground next year when we return to finish the second half of the trail. As soon as we arrived in Kranjska Gora we stopped at a cafe to celebrate our achievement with G&T, Beer and the luscious Bled Cake (like a vanilla slice on steroids) and shortly after Isabel and Bruce arrived - a lovely way to finish the day.Weiterlesen

    27. Juni 2018 in Slowenien ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Nearly 400 km of physically challenging and spectacular walking trail from the Austrian Alps across the border to Slovenia - thanks Team Nankivell for your excellent company and sharing the adventure with us. We can’t wait to pick up where we left off to complete the second half of the trail, all the way through to the stunning Adriatic Ocean.Weiterlesen
