  • ME - Taking a day off

    29. september 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

.. travelling or sightseeing today. Just hanging out ...

Got up really early to see the sunrise over the Atlantic and went for a long walk along the beach.

Found yet another craft brewery to try some more beers. My 'Left on Read' wasn't bad, didn't enjoy Fergus' 'Greenwarden' much - tasted like biting on pine needles 😂

But none of them we liked enough to buy a 4-pack.
Need to find another one 😬

  • ME - Cape Elizabeth and South Portland

    30. september 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Leaving sightseeing in Portland for our walking tour tomorrow, we decided to explore Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough Marshes and South Portland.

First Stop, Fort Williams Park at Cape Elizabeth on the edge of Casco Bay. The name of the Casco Bay "Calender Bay" stems from the 18th century myth that there were "as many islands as there are days in the year."
The park encompasses several historical sites
👆 Portland Head Light - construction began in 1787 and was completed in 1791. This makes it the oldest of the 66 lighthouses in Maine.
Even if it's a historic site, it's still being maintained by the US Coast Guard to aid navigation
    👆Goddard Mansion - well, a ruin really.
Built in 1853–59 for Colonel John Goddard. At the time he was the wealthiest man in Cape Elizabeth and responsible for organising the First Maine Cavalry.
👆Several Batteries where used to station soldiers during World War II as Portland and Casco Bay served as the home base for the North Atlantic Fleet of the U.S. Navy from 1940-1945.

To add to our collection of lighthouses, we went to Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse. It's sitting on a 960 ft breakwater in Portland harbor. Walking across the breakwater is a little treacherous as there are some sizable gaps between the granite blocks.

The lighthouse is quite cute. It's basically consisting of a three-story living area, with the lantern on top.
Completely different approach to the Portland Head Light which needed a keeper house next to it.
But nowadays they are all electric anyway.

And after all this walking and exploring, one needs to find something to eat ... and drink.
Might not have been the most healthiest meal but it tasted great 😃

  • ME - Portland

    1. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    Our last day in Maine.
We joined a walking tour to explore the largest city in the state.

Portland was created in 1786 even if there were settlements in the bay as early as 1632. It was made state capital in 1820 when Maine was established as a state.

First thing to note are extortionate, sky high parking charges despite seemingly lots of parking being available. It gives the impression that the city wants to keep cars out and instead have more cruise ship visitors. Having a big cruise ship in town, the area around the old port is just jam-packed with people queueing for boat excursions, city tours on funny looking vehicles or 'Holy Donuts'. Imagine more of them 🫣

Portland's motto is "Resurgam" ("I will rise again" as the Phoenix from the Ashes), reflecting the city's resilience after four catastrophic fires from 1690 to 1886. No surprise that the city seal depicts a phoenix rising from ashes.

The last fire destroyed 2,000 buildings and left 75% of the population homeless. Hence Portland has been rebuilt in sturdy stone Victorian style houses.

With lots of the historic houses being destroyed since, Portland feels like a mismatch of styles.

All in all, we didn't think much of Portland. However, I picked up a few interesting titbits
    👆Holy Donut - it's a craze!!
The Holy Donut is a modern-day Maine phenomenon — donuts made from genuine Maine potatoes. Basically, it's a creative used of mashed potatoes. And the queues outside the store are phenomenal too.
👆Lobsters - are big business in Maine and the biggest export item handled by the Portland Customs House. Everybody can obtain a license to fish for lobsters - permit costs about 500 dollars per year and one can't have more than one crew to protect family businesses.
There are stringent regulations which size of lobster can be kept and which has to be thrown back.
Any lobster with eggs under its belly has to be marked (as reproducing) and thrown back.
It's only after WWII that lobster became a delicacy
👆 In 1851, Maine led the nation by passing the first state law prohibiting the sale of alcohol except for "medicinal, mechanical or manufacturing purposes." The law subsequently became known as the Maine Law as 18 states quickly followed.
👆Portland Rum Riot - In May 1855, rumors began to spread that Portland Mayor Neal Dow, an outspoken prohibitionist was keeping a large supply of alcohol in the city. Portland’s large Irish immigrant population were particularly vocal critics of the Maine Law, seeing it as thinly veiled racist attack on their culture (the Irish were known or suspected to be drunkards).
On the afternoon of June 2, a crowd began to gather outside the building where the spirits were being held. The crowd numbered about 200 by 5:00 p.m. and grew larger and more agitated as the day progressed as it became evident that the police had no immediate plans to seize or destroy the liquor.
Police were unable to deal with the growing mob, and Dow called out the militia. The exact details of the climax of the riot have been hotly debated. What is known is that after ordering the protesters to disperse, the militia detachment fired into the crowd on Dow's orders. One man, John Robbins, an immigrant and mate of a Maine sailing vessel from Deer Isle, was killed, and seven others were wounded. In a twist of irony, Dow was later prosecuted for violation of the Maine Law for improperly acquiring the alcohol. Dow was acquitted, but the event was a major contributing factor to the repeal of the Maine law in 1856.

So all of that in the attempt to stop people enjoying themselves. It's rather ironic that Portland today, has more breweries per capita than any other city of the US.

  • NH - Lake Winnipesaukee

    2. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Not being able to go to Canada means we have two days to fill that weren't planned.

Having spent a week travelling along the coast in Maine, we decided to get back inland to New Hampshire and spend a couple of nights along Lake Winnipesaukee, the biggest lake in NH.
A big tourist magnet in the summer but at the end of the season it's rather sedate and just beautiful.

We spent the day driving around the lake (literally), stopping at various places to take in the scenery, walk along brooks and just enjoy the views and sunshine.

    A gorgeous day it was!!

The autumn foliage has come a long way since we started our road trip almost three weeks ago. Now it's like driving through a canvas of yellow, orange and red colours. One has to experience it to feel it.

  • NH - Blue Job Mountain Hike

    3. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

We left Gilford in glorious sunshine this morning. Beautiful blue sky but very cold. Guess this somehow goes together at this time of year.

Driving through the country side, the scenery is just gorgeous. The autumn colours are stunning in the sunlight.

Stopping close to Strafford for our first hike of the day. Walking up Blue Job Mountain which promises wonderful view across to the White Mountains.

And indeed, it didn't disappoint. The visibility was fantastic and we could see Mount Washington in the distance. Funny to think that we went up there only 10 days ago.

  • NH - Hiking Colby Marsh

    3. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

After the stunning scenery of Scarborough marshes, we decided to check out Colby Marsh for our last hike of the trip.

It's a nice little loop through some forest. But in our view more swamp than marsh. So not quite what we expected.

Still some nice views, some wildlife and many more glacial erratics, i.e. chunks of rocks that have been transported by the glacier over long distances and then dropped far from their origin.

Hiking boots will be packed up after this 😬

  • NH - Our last night in NH and Maine

    3. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Staying at the Portsmouth Hotel for our last night in New Hampshire and our penultimate night of our New England Roadtrip.

With Portsmouth boasting to have the first craft brewery in New Hampshire, no doubt we have to check it out.

Portsmouth Brewery - not a very original name - brews beer since 1991. Since then over 90 craft breweries have been established in New Hampshire.
As usual we had a few tasters to help the decision making process. Must admit it's wasn't the best craft beer we had nor the nicest place to relax.
The most curious thing was that an old general turned up on his 🐎. And duly 'parked' it outside the pub 😂.

But what to do for dinner? Fancy some ribs?
Where best to go ... ah, let's just walk across the bridge to Badgers Island in Maine.

Ribs and pulled pork were very tasty, serving dishes typical American 🤷
At least in the breweries, pubs and shaks we went to.

  • NH - Exploring Portsmouth

    4. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We spent the morning exploring Portsmouth, NH.
Not surprisingly we couldn't stop comparing it with the one in Old England.

When settlers arrived in 1623, they called the place 'Strawbery Banke' in honor of the berries blanketing the banks of the Piscataqua River.

It's a small city with lots of historic buildings from 17th and 18th century. It's has a nice vibe with fine colonial residences sitting harmoniously next to newer buildings that have been rebuilt in brick after several fires in the early 1800s

It is a tourist destination but not so much that they sell a lot on merchandise. No Portsmouth baseball cap for Fergus.

There are a couple of titbits to share
👆The name Portsmouth was adopted in 1653 to honour John Mason, Captain of the Port in Portsmouth, England, and because it was a good harbor situated at the river's mouth.
👆 The Treaty of Portsmouth - In 1905, the treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War was hosted in Portsmouth. New Hampshire is the only state to play host for the conclusion of a foreign war. President Teddy Roosevelt even won the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the treaty!
👆 Portsmouth's Restaurant scene offers more seats than there are inhabitants
👆The city has been voted as best place to live in New Hampshire after Hanover and Bedford

  • MA - Witch hunting in Salem

    4. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

What a crazy experience this has been !!

History as a basis for nowadays hype.
Even on a cold Tuesday in early October, the town is packed with people dressed up. We were wondering if there was a special event. But as the guy in the visitor center said to us 'October is Halloween and the town goes crazy. It's like this every day'

Or as Fergus put it 'the town has become an unofficial theme park'

And here is the history -
👆The infamous Salem witch trials began during the spring of 1692, after a group of young girls in Salem Village, MA, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft.
A special court was convened in Salem to hear the cases; the first convicted witch, Bridget Bishop, was hanged that June. Eighteen others followed Bishop to Salem’s Gallows Hill, while some 150 more men, women and children were accused over the next months.
👆By September 1692, the hysteria had begun to abate and public opinion turned against the trials. Though the Massachusetts General Court later annulled guilty verdicts against accused witches and granted indemnities to their families, bitterness lingered in the community, and the painful legacy of the Salem witch trials would endure for centuries.
👆In an effort to explain by scientific means the strange afflictions suffered by those "bewitched" Salem residents in 1692, a study published in Science magazine in 1976 cited the fungus ergot (found in rye, wheat and other cereals), which toxicologists say can cause symptoms such as delusions, vomiting and muscle spasms.

Of course, lots of other important historic events in Salem are linked to the American Revolution in 1775 and seafaring and shipbuilding.

But all of this pales against the Halloween craze this time of year.

  • New England - Roadtrip ends here

    5. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Our New England Roadtrip has come to an end.

What a great experience. We loved (almost) every minute of it. It has been an epic trip as we

    👆visited 4 states
    👆managed to avoid Hurricane Fiona
    👆stayed in 11 different locations
    👆hiked 12 different trails
    👆sailed Penobscot Bay
👆saw thousands of trees with beautiful autumn foliage
    👆experienced 9 different craft breweries
👆tasted countless different beers when taking into account the tasters we had in each brewery and pub to decide which beer to have
👆put on unknown amount of weight having eaten an American diet over the last three weeks 😳

And despite a little bit of shopping, we still travel back with only two checked-in cases and two rucksacks 😂

Now at Boston Logan Airport, waiting for our flight to New York City.

  • Halloween is here 👻🎃

    5. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

    It's still early October ...
but we saw so many people getting ready for 'Trick or Treats'.

In fact, October is one big Halloween.
We understood this, after having been to Salem, MA yesterday

It's difficult to capture all while driving past.
So here is just a small selection of what we saw, i.e.
when I could convince Fergus to stop the car or turn around.

  • NYC - 24 hours in the Big Apple

    6. oktober 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

What to do in a city that is far too big to explore in a few hours ??

    Choices have to be made
    Priorities have to be set.

Prio #1 - meet Jana, a friend I haven't seen for more than five years and spend the evening with her

After that, we didn't have any specific plans, just to get a feeling for a city we definitely want to come back to. Hence we ended up ...
👆 riding the subway in the wrong direction but only for one (long) stop 😳
👆walking through Central Park - from Strawberry Fields and the Lake all the way to 5th Avenue
👆walking even further down to 30th West Street (should have taken the subway) to walk along the High Line
👆 exploring Chelsea Market and Meat Packing District Neighborhood ... also on foot.
👆in Starbucks Reserve Roastery - apparently only one of five global locations where coffee is roasted
👆queued for ages to get up (and down) to 'Top of the Rock' - the observation platform at the Rockefeller Center

All the big ticket items - Ground Zero, Empire State Building, a show on Broadway, a trip to the statue of Liberty etc have to wait for our return to the Big Apple.

    Hopefully not too long 😬
