Arrived Heathrow 6am and sorted mobile
SIM cards (not cheap if you need data), located the pickup spot for a shuttle to Avis car hire when we leave London and Oyster cards for London travel. Left bags at Acton Town Hotel and took Underground to Westminster station then walked across Bridge St bridge and rode the London Eye which was built to mark London’s millennium celebrations in 2000. The highest point of the observation wheel ride is 443 feet above the Thames. Then across the Hungerford foot bridge and lunch at “The Ship & Shore” pub in Craven Passage in Charing Cross (est 1776). Returned to Acton Town Hotel and changed, then tube to Vauxhall and City Hash run.Читать далее

Breakfast a bit hit & miss. Corn flakes & Coco Pops... Off to Hampton Court Palace built by Cardinal Wolsey & gifted to Henry Vlll just before his execution. Five of Henry VIII six wives lived here. It was a favourite residence of Elizabeth I. Charles I also lived here. Started with the young Henry story audio tour, then the Georgian story audio tour, followed by the audio tour of William III apartments missing Henry VIII apartments by accident. Bus and walk to Kew Gardens, officially called the Royal Botanic Gardens. Wandered about and looked at plants both inside and outside a number of greenhouses, including the Alpine House, Palm House, Temperate House and Waterlily House. Saw a Wollemi Pine and Monkey Puzzle trees both of which have different male and female seeds on the same tree. Dinner at Kew Hotel, then train back to Acton Town hotel.Читать далее

After a loud night by the tradies staying at the Acton Town Hotel we scored boiled eggs at breakfast. Underground to Warwick Avenue station then short walk to Jason’s narrow boat trip starting at Little Venice along the Regent’s Canal to Camden Lock. They had space for us and we had a pleasant trip in a 111 year old narrow canal boat originally used as a horse drawn cargo vessel. Camden Lock area is filled with food stalls were we bought coffee. The Camden Town high street is packed with tourist and other shops, but no shop for new running shoes. Walked to the nearby London Zoo and spent a nice afternoon there. Walked across Regency Park to Baker Street underground station and traveled to Pinner for West London Hash. Google maps directed to another suburb and then directed us to retrace our route to the meeting pub just on the other side of Pinner station. Back to Acton Town Hotel about 11.30.Читать далее

Train to Paddington and took a National line train to Slough station then a two carriage diesel motor rail to Windsor Eton. Coffee and cake by the Thames then across to Eton and wandered down to Eton College. Visited Windsor Castle as the weather deteriorated and saw Queen Mary’s Dolls House designed in 1923. Also visited the State Apartments containing paintings by Rembrandt and Rubens. As well looked at St George’s Chapel with its gothic architecture. Beers and fish, chips and peas at the Horse and Groom opposite Windsor Castle. Early night back at Acton Town Hotel.Читать далее

Washed clothes in a local laundrette and attended a London Hash run at Arnos Grove from noon onwards. Cold and damp day with two drink and cheese stops. I carelessly did not put wet umbrellas in pack pockets, so returned to the home run house to retrieve them.Читать далее

Rugged up for a cold day (max 9 degrees) and took Underground to Westminster station, then City Cruises ferry with excellent commentary to Greenwich. Visited the Cutty Sark the fastest tea and later wool clipper in the world, followed by a beer in the Spanish Hotel then pork pie from Greenwich Markets. Visited the Old Royal Observatory where the Greenwich Meridian Line is located. Visited Flamsteed House with its display of the lives of the Royal Astronomers. Just enough time to look through the Queens House and it’s collection of paintings. Then back to Tower Bridge pier by ferry. Walked to the “Gherkin” where people were setting up to make a film.Читать далее

Wet and cold day. Wore thermals under clothes, down jacket and gortex rain jacket. Tower of London after breakfast. Queued to get to in, Interesting mint and historical coin making display in the Royal Mint (1279-1812). Beefeater historical talk in the chapel as it was too wet for tours. Queued in the rain again to see the Royal Jewels. Next visited the White Tower (original home of the Crown Jewels, now housing historical armour displays. Then St Martins Tower with old royal crowns from which the jewels had been removed. After the Tower walked to Tower Bridge for the glass footway experience, followed by the steam driven Victorian engines for lifting the road to allow shipping through. Walked to the Shard stopping for lattes on the way, and took the lift to the 68th floor and walked to 69th floor where Yvonne had a cocktail, walked up to open 72nd floor and took more photos. District line to Westminster, then Horse Guards museum. Not much of interest here. Decided not to watch the ceremonial changing of the Mounted Horse Guard here at 11am, so we walked to Buckingham Palace through St James’s Park and waited for the ceremonial changing of the Guard there which did not happen. Thousands of us were there. The Mounted Horse Guard rode a through and there was a informal changing of a Pill Box guard. Nearby a military band was playing at a military barracks on the other side of the street called Birdcage Walk.We then visited the Royal Mews, with its excellent carriage display, followed by the Queen’s Gallery portraying Charles II, the king invited back following Cromwell’s Commonwealth. We then visited the Wellington Arch. The Arch was built as an entrance to Buckingham Palace but was moved to its present location 100 metres away becoming a victory Arch. On the way to the Churchill War rooms and museum, had soup at Victoria Station. Stayed at Churchill’s War rooms excellent displays till 6pm. Walked to the Morpeth Arms at Pimlico next to the drink stop of last weeks’s run across the river from the MI6 building. 7km run through much of the area we walked through earlier in the day. Back to Acton Town after 10pm for chicken pieces and chips from a local shop.Читать далее

Travelled to the Albert Hall to be told that there would not be any tours today. Walked in the rain through Hyde Park to Kensington Palace and saw the story of Queen Victoria’s life in the rooms she grew up in. Also saw information relating to Prince Albert, George II and Queen Caroline and Princess Diana’s clothing. Walked back in Hyde Park to the Serpentine Gallery inside which animated art was screening. Then walked to Harrods and saw a truck sideswipe a bus on the way. Yvonne purchased cosmetics and perfume and we visited the amazing food halls. Underground to the reconstructed Globe theatre having dinner in a pub nearby. Saw play “As you Like it”. The play was presented in Elizabethan style with male actors playing female roles and costume changes on stage. Back to Acton Town Hotel around 11.30pm.Читать далее

Underground to Westminster where we joined a Big Bus tour. After a short distance alighted at the Houses of Parliament then walked around the corner to Westminster Abbey which has thousands of people buried there with spectacular memorial stone sculptures. Most sovereigns from 1066 to 1760 are buried there. Afterwards toured the Jewel House part of the original Westminster Palace where jewels and other precious objects were stored, before getting back on the Big Bus at around 1pm and was driven around London seeing Waterloo Arch, Marble Arch, Piccadilly Circus with an audio commentary till we alighted at St Paul’s Cathedral just too late to be allowed in. There was broken down truck blocking the road before St Paul’s which the bus could not pass till it was towed which delayed us. Instead we bought running shoes before taking the Underground to Hatton Cross to the Green Man Pub under the Heathrow landing flight path for a West London Hash semi rural 10km run involving a wade across a creek, a long tunnel by torch light and many fields. Late night getting back to Acton Town Hotel after midnight.Читать далее

Underground to South Kensington then walked to the Albert Hall and enjoyed a tour of the property. The building was not damaged in WWII and people such as the Queen have a 999 year lease on seats. Promoters pay to hire the hall but not necessarily the organ and must equip the space themselves. Ticket pricing is decided by the promoter. Because of this the floor of the Hall has been set up for concerts, both classical and rock, performances involving horses and masters tennis matches, as well as opera involving a great deal of water. Walked back to South Kensington and took the Underground to Blackfriars and walked to St Paul’s Cathedral. No photos however have photographed postcards I purchased. The Cathedral was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and was completed in 1711. We climbed 259 spiral shallow steps to the Whispering Gallery at a height of 100 feet above the Cathedral floor. Then a further 117 steps to the Stone Gallery outside followed by 166 spiral steps to Golden outside gallery before returning down to the Cathedral floor. We walked across the Millennium Bridge and along the Thames Walk and back over the Embankment Bridge to reach the Banqueting House with its nine ceiling paintings by Rubens painted in 1635. It is the only surviving building from the Whitehall Palace destroyed in 1698 by fire. Purchased picnic dinner from large Morrison’s supermarket at Acton Town and ate in room.Читать далее

Late breakfast and got away just after 10am. Underground to Piccadilly Circus then visited the National Art Gallery for a few hours. Then looked for a pub for lunch and ended back at the Ship and Shovel down the lane from Northumberland Ave down from Sherlock Holmes Hotel. Back to Acton Town Hotel to change for the City London and West London Hash clubs Spring Fling ferry Cruise. The ferry “Royal” took us upstream to the Putney Pier past the site of an old coal driven power station being stripped out for redevelopment. There was a band which was too loud providing music for dancing and a meal provided. Back at Action Town Hotel around 11.45pm.Читать далее

Got up just after 8am, breakfast then washed clothes. Underground to Stratford, then Docklands Light Rail to Stratford International (very expensive). Looked at Queen Elizabeth Park which was the site of the last London olympics. There were people pouring in for a music festival in the evening, Blokes were selling soda syphon gas refills and balloons. Trouble was that we really wanted to visit the O2 (Millennium Dome). Returned to Stratford International and had coffee before travelling to North Greenwich and the O2. Wandered around and photographed the Thames River Flood Barrier as well as the dome. Back to London Bridge station and walked to and across Tower Bridge and up to East Aldgate. Dinner in the White Heart Hotel where one of Jack the Ripper’s victims was murdered in the adjacent lane.Читать далее

Train to Heathrow but could not return the Oyster Cards despite being told by the same people when we arrived that the credit card would be refunded. Shuttle to Avis where we were charged extra to cross the border into the Irish Republic. We were upgraded to a larger Skoda Estate and took over 1 hour to start driving. The GPS guided us to Canterbury in Kent. There were a number of congestion holdups on the motorways on the way. Found a car park adjacent to the historic centre of Canterbury. The front of the Cathedral was covered by scaffold like Big Ben in London. Wandered around taking photos and purchased Yvonne some footwear from a running shop. Also stumbled across the Canterbury Abby. Drove to Sandwich also in Kent and took more photos. Sandwich is full of medieval buildings. Dinner of sea bass and mussels at the Bell Hotel in Sandwich. Drove to Dover still in Kent passing the Premier Inn Dover East (should be called Dover Heights) and asked directions in Dover at a service station with a Spar supermarket. Better room than Acton Town but breakfast and dinner must be purchased from the related adjacent hotel or drive 2 miles down to Dover.Читать далее

Purchased the full breakfast (unlimited bacon, sausage, egg etc) so no need for lunch. Parked in the National Trust White Cliffs Visitor Centre outside the gate that was locked at 7pm. Good view of the Port of Dover where we parked as well as on the walk. Were told that it was VE Day (Victory in Europe) and to look for a Spitfire fly past. Throughout the day there were many Spitfire flypasts and a couple of flypasts of a larger WWII plane. The walk initially followed the tourist National Trust path to the South Foreland Lighthouse, on which we were able to photograph Dover Castle in the distance. Just after the lighthouse we found the entrance to the South Foreland Deep Shelter which may lead to defensive gun emplacements in the St Margaret’s Bay. Had a pint of beer in the Coastguard Hotel in St Margaret’s Bay for lunch and continued on to the edge of Deal, passing a tall obelisk for sailors of the Royal Navy in WWI and the Merchant Navy in WWII. The Deal seafront involves a long stretch of pebble with a long row of houses. There were a number of bathing huts as well. We walked as far as Walmer Castle built by HenryVIII as an artillery platform. Steak at the Coastguard Hotel back at St Margaret’s Bay. Back at the car about 8.15pm. Second night at the Premier Inn Guston Wood.Читать далее

Drove from Premier Inn Guston Wood to Dungemess Kent which is a privately owned headland where there is a nuclear power station and a small tourist steam train, as well as an old lighthouse. We then drove to Hastings in East Sussex and met Kylie, daughter of a Sydney Harriette on the Hastings pier. Afterwards looked at Hastings old town before driving to the Portsmouth Ibis Inn in Hampshire to drop off bags before driving to Hamble for dinner with Simon Mayer and Cathy. Back to to the Portsmouth Ibis Inn after midnight.Читать далее

No breakfast this morning at the Ibis Budget Pompey Centre Portsmouth. Just drove to Wightlink Ferry. Arrived in time to catch the 8.30am ferry instead of the 9am ferry we has booked. Drove to Brading and paid GBP 5 for 12 hours parking. Looked at St Mary’s church had a latte before commencing the seven mile Brading Marshes walk. As well as the marshes (old shallow harbour now reclaimed land), we saw the Bembridge Windmill and the coast. Lunch at the Culver Haven Hotel Bembridge. The foot paths back to Brading had not seen much use lately and we navigated part of the way though fields by sighting the church spire in Brading. Wandered around and found the station and photographed the Island train. Drove to the Roman Villa after closing so missed the tiled floor, saw the foundations at ground level and the under floor heating. Then drove to St Catherine’s lighthouse and had dinner at the Buddle Inn at Niton. Then spent the night in Kasbah Hotel in Ryde.Читать далее

Noisy smokers courtyard till about 11.30pm last night. Could not login to hotel wifi either. Moved car from pay car park around 8.30am to Union Street Ryde near front of Kasbah and joined Yvonne for breakfast in a cafe opposite. Drove to Freshwater and walked along the cliff tops to the famous Needles sea stacks in a strong cold wind. As well as the Needles sea stacks you could see the continuation of the chalk under the water towards Harry’s rocks in Dorset. At the Needles New Battery - Victorian gun emplacement and Cold War rocket test site, as a bonus there was an interesting display concerning the British rocket development program which occurred here with production of the rockets at East Cowes and launching at Woomera in South Australia. The rockets were based on the German rockets of WWII and formed the basis of the later American rocket program. Lunch of steak pies at the Warren Farm on the way back to Freshwater. Drove to Carisbrook Castle and walked around the perimeter of the walls before driving to Osborne House where we spotted a rare Red Squirrel. Walked around the gardens before driving to nearby East Cowes for dinner at the Lifeboat Hotel/Restaurant at the yacht marina. Expecting a noisy night at Kasbah as the small wine bar closes at 2am, may even use the supplied ear plugs.(May explain the very low price for our accommodation)Читать далее

Light not working in Kasbah’s hall in Ryde so used phone torch on the stairs. Arrived at Wightlink Fishbourne and told to come back after 10am for our 11am booked ferry spot. We drove onto the ferry and up a ramp to an upper deck. On returning to the car at the end of the crossing to Portsmouth the car alarm was sounding. Fortunately unlocking the doors turned off the noise. While waiting in the car to drive off the ferry the floor the car was sitting on descended and became a steep ramp to drive to the lower deck. We then drove to Salisbury and used the park and ride from Peterfinger to get into the city. Wandered around the old town and had lunch at Bills pub. Walked to Salisbury Cathedral and saw one of the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta. Set the GPS to Studland Beach to see Harry's Rocks (chalk sea stacks at the end of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset), but unfortunately the GPS took us to a chain operated car ferry near Poole on the wrong side of the bay. So we continued on towards Neitherleigh Bed and Breakfast. There was a group of deer grazing beside the highway (no stags) unconcerned by card roaring past at to up to 70 miles per hour only a few yards away. Stopped briefly at Chideock to photograph some of the many thatched houses there. Unfortunately the idyllic Netherleigh Snug Room does not quite match the internet but we will be comfortable. Full breakfast at 8am, Drove to West Bay in Dorset. All day parking for two pounds. Walked west to Eype over the cliff tops and continued on to Golden Cap past the Thorncombe Beacon and through Seatown along the South West Coast path. Ate well traveled chocolate biscuits and fruit enjoying the view from Golden Cap. Returned to Seatown via Langdon Hill for beer at the Anchor pub. Afterwards walked back to West Beach and eastward along the coast path till we overlooked a Freshwater Beach backed by mobile portable holiday buildings near Burton Bradstock. Drove to Chideok and bought dessert items, then had dinner at the George Hotel just down the road from Neitherleigh Bed & Breakfast.Читать далее

7.15am breakfast then drove to Lyme Regis. Parked in a long stay car park for two pounds all day. (Just like West Beach yesterday.) Walked along the seafront to reach Monmouth Beach. Looked for fossil ammonites amongst the beach pebbles and Yvonne found two good ammonite fragments. Later we found a limestone ledge exposed at low tide with hundreds of fossilized ammonites. Unfortunately the shale under the limestone is causing the shelf to gradually break up. Haddock and chips for me and scallops for Yvonne in a pub for lunch. Visited the Lyme winery and Axminster before dinner at Netherleigh Bed & Breakfast in Cooks Lane.Читать далее

Washed clothes in a Axminster launderette then drove to Beer Quarry Caves. Informative underground tour for 1 hour describing how the quarry men extracted the Beer Stone which is a very fine grade of chalk by hand, using pick axes and stone saws. Stone was first extracted by the Romans for their villas, later Normans used the stone for cathedrals, castles and manor houses. The stone is soft for some time after it leaves the ground and stonemasons both onsite and at remote locations would carve it before it hardened into a durable rock that lasts for many centuries. A tectonic plate fault passed through the underground quarry and horizontal slippage which occurred about twenty million years ago is visible. The last quarrying in the immediate area ceased in 2003. The quarry we toured last was used around 1920. We drove to the Beer town centre and parked in the headland long stay car park. From there walked along the Coast Path to Branscombe Mouth then on to Branscombe village where there is a National Trust water mill, bakery and iron forge. Returned to Branscombe Mouth and on to Beer a beautiful fishing port. After taking photos drove to Seaton where we purchased groceries and petrol.Читать далее

Left Neitherleigh in Cooks Lane Axminster about 9.30am and set the GPS to Trethevy to see the Trethevy Quoit roofed standing stone site. After driving way back into Dorset we followed motorways and rural road to to Tintagel Brewery in North Cornwall in rain and later sea fog as the village of Trethevy is nowhere near the ancient monument with the same name. So we did a brewery tour and Yvonne understood everything. Sampled some craft beers and ate Wagyu pie from the farm cattle who are fed the used brewery grain and liquid wort before becoming our meal. Drove to Tintagel (pronounced TinTagel) visitors centre. Then visited the quirky King Arthur’s Great Halls that we’re built in the 1930’ies by millionaire at enormous cost the building has a large room containing 72 stained glass windows. We then drove to look for the Men-an-tol holed stone and Yvonne spotted two solitary standing stones in different fields before we found the poorly signed lane to Men-an-tol standing holed stone. Walked half a mile to the stone. When driving to our accommodation Yvonne spotted the Lanyon Quoit almost completely hidden from the road, It may be around six thousand years old. Very narrow lanes near in this area. Codna Coath is a small cottage in Sellan Penzance area run by Margaret probably in her eighties. We are upstairs in a 1898 building in a upstairs room with a ceiling following the roof above with a framed picture of Queen Victoria over the bed.Читать далее

The light rain of yesterday has stopped and we had breakfast at 8am after Margaret had taken the eggs to the Co op market. Left about 10am and drove to the Carn Euny Iron Age village containing a fogou (underground chamber and passage). Then drove to Sennen Beach passing on the way with difficulty a car and truck in a narrow lane. Walked to Lands End along the Coast Path passing a wreck on the way. Yvonne purchased a tea towel from the “First and Last” shop. Returned to the car and drove to Cape Cornwall and parked at the edge of St Just village. Walked downhill to Cape Cornwall then down a track to Porth Ledden cove via a high tide boat access. As it was low tide we crossed the rocks and I took photos of seaweed and mussels before arriving at the Kenidjack area of the Tin Coast. We saw the conserved arsenic works ruin near the catcher pool dam. Followed the Coast Path towards St Just and back to the car. Drove to the the Bowood Park Hotel Lanteglos, Camelford which is in the middle of it’s own golf course. Dinner at the hotel as is not near any urban centre.Читать далее
