• Bridge of Glass

We should have taken a closer look at the days the Museum of Glass in Tacoma is open. But this being a Tuesday, we didn’t think about it. After all, most museums are closed on Mondays and not on Tuesdays, aren’t they?

Luckily, we didn’t have to drive far from the campground at Dash Point State Park to the Museum of Glass. And while we would have liked to have seen the pieces on exhibit inside, we at least had a chance to the see the reflecting pool on the plaza overlooking the Thea Foss Waterway and the Chihuly Bridge of Glass, which connects the Washington State History Museum with the Museum of Glass.

The 500-foot long bridge is home to three Chihuly art installations. There is the Seaform Pavilion, the ceiling of which is filled with over 2,000 objects made of glass. Chihuly’s intent was for visitors to feel like they are walking underwater with a coral reef above. Then there is the pair of crystal towers in the middle of the bridge … the color of the translucent glass reminded me of glacial ice. Finally, visitors come to the Venetian Wall … 80 feet long … with cubicles displaying over 100 glass sculptures.

Our museum plans didn’t work out as expected, but we enjoyed our short wander anyway. And I’m glad we had time to relax on the patio at the campground — before and after — our short jaunt to Tacoma.
