    Let's Go!

    August 28, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

Ready for the long flight to Zurich! Delta Crown Room is really nice in the international terminal.

  • Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!

    August 29, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

The flight to Zurich was uneventful (thankfully) and was surprised at how small the airport was. There was immigration/passport inspection but no customs. We quickly went to the train station for a ride to Basel, Switzerland 🇨🇭 and the hour long trip was relaxing, even viewing a nuclear powerplant and the local industrial economy. The Basel train station was great and we taxied to the hotel. Initially, in hindsight, I should have booked a hotel in Basel. Our Courtyard (yes points) in Prattein was new but in an industrial area. We only slept about an hour each on the flight and took a two hour nap. We walked to the old towne Prattein did enjoy walking around and had some schnitzel for lunch. We returned to the Courtyard and replied to work emails and then proceeded to the Bar for a night cap.Read more

  • Day in Basel, Switzerland.

    August 30, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

Angele and I left our hotel for the Viking dock and the staff graciously took our bags and Angele and I left to explore the city. We should have stayed in Basel yesterday! Basel is the third largest Swiss city (population of 180k) hosting about 60 Pharma corporations and other industries with a great mix of culture and history with museums. Walking the Old Towne on our own and then a guided tour was enjoyable.Read more

  • The Black Forest

    August 31, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Our first excursion was a 1.5 hour bus trip through German countryside to a little area in the Black Forest. Visited a chapel constructed in the 1100's and this area is known for Cuckoo Clock Makers. Part of the trip was how to make an authentic Black Forest Cake. Interesting history/story, but not my favorite cake.Read more

  • Afternoon in Breisach, Germany

    August 31, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

Had lunch on the boat and then Renee, Angele, I walked up into Breisach. The church has an interesting story, note the two spires are completely different. A wedding was happening in the church so could not explore fully. Hiked up the hill and was not much there besides residences. Found the little town and found some excellent Ice Cream!Read more

  • Summer Wine Festival in Breisach!

    August 31, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

Angele, Renee, and I ran into some fellow Viking Explorers who were looking for a wine festival. We assumed it was down a blocked off street and we were correct. About 20 German wineries and it was a bargain, even if it was German wine. Two different bands were playing with one a more traditional German band and one was a brass band. Food venders selling stuff I have never seen or heard of. Have to say tired 90 degree weather.Read more

  • Strasbourg, France

    September 1, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Renee, Mark, Angele, and I took a tour of Strasbourg, France this morning. City with a great history as it has flipped back and fourth between being a German and France city.

  • Quick stop at Obernai, France

    September 1, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

Nice little midevel village for a quick stop on our way to a wine tasting. Town is famous for Sainte-Odile, the patron saint for Alsace. Born blind and regained sight after she was baptized at 13 years old.Read more

  • More Speyer photos

  • Some more Castles of the Rhine

    September 3, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Interesting issue, our Viking ship had to port before today's stop in Koblenz under the Marksburg Castle. Up river there is construction and an unexploded ordinance from WW2 was discovered. Waiting to see if our walking tour of Koblenz is effected. Our director, Elizabeth, provided great stories and narration of the Castles and village on this mornings trip.Read more

  • Day in Koblenz, Germany

    September 3, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Koblenz, Germany is a fast growing part of Europe due to its central European location and it's cost of living compared elsewhere but this is changing. Many USA companies have European headquarters in Koblenz such as Amazon with 20k associates. Koblenz was a major industrial city and as such, was greatly impacted by WW2. Our tour of the old city was enjoyable!Read more

Story on the clock and the face where his eyes move and his tongue is out at the top of the hour is amusing. Also, the spitting boy fountain is popular with the locals.

  • Cologne Cathedral

    September 4, 2024 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

This morning's tour was Old Towne Cologne with the highlight being the Cathedral. Cologne was 96% destroyed during WW2 and the city was rebuilt to look as it did pre-war. The Cathedral was damaged during the war although there was an allied effort to not bomb it. Construction began on the Cathedral, also known as Saint Peter and Mary, in 1248 and took centuries to finish. It costs 9M Euros a year for maintenance and upkeep. It is one of the largest church's and can be seen for miles.Read more

  • Beer tour of Cologne

    September 4, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Tonight we signed up for a Brauhaus tour with dinner and sampling local beer from Cologne. None of us are real beer drinkers but our traditional German dinner at Peter's and the beer at the other establishments was tasty. Even had Schnapps at one!Read more
