Ushuaia and Heading Out to Antarctica

    January 8 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Paul and I had to move cabins, from 507 to 717 on floor 7. Thanks goodness there are lifts that we can use, otherwise carrying our suitcases would have been a struggle!

We eventually took a walk into town and back again, getting some much needed exercise. Along the road we saw beautiful flowers - i think they are Rainbow Lupines.

A safety briefing will be held soon which I will attend.

Joy of joys! One of the expedition team members saw me and volunteered to get me a smaller pair of boots which I can take back to the cabin for now. At least I am guaranteed not having to wear a pair that are 3 sizes too big!

  • Land in sight!

    January 10, Bransfield Strait ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

After 2 days at sea, we are close to some of the islands of Antarctica again. Tomorrow we will do our first landing of this voyage at Neko Harbour, mainland Antarctica

  • Neko Harbour

    January 11 in Antarctica ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

Today was overcast but the clouds lifted a bit to reveal snowy mountains by the time I set foot ashore.

The nearby glacier was quite active, resulting in a few calvings. One was bigger and caused some motion of the ocean but it wasn't too bad. Transport of guests ashore stopped temporarily until the water calmed down. Guests at the shore were asked to move to higher ground just in case. Only small waves broke on the shore but it was best to be safe.

I walked to the viewpoint and felt out of breath by the time I got there. I am a bit unfit!

I had time to see the pengin rookeries on the way down. Quite a few penguins had 2 chicks and some were quite big already.

Orcas and a humpback whale were spotted in the bay.

  • Paradise Bay

    January 11 in Antarctica ⋅ 🌨 -1 °C

It was snowing and raining (sleet) when we arrived in Paradise Bay. It continued throughout the afternoon so Paul and I decided not to get off the ship for a zodiac cruise. We sat in one of the hot tubs instead, keeping warm.Read more

  • Port Charcot & Pleneau Bay

    January 12, Southern Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 0 °C

Paul and I went ashore for a walk at Port Charcot. Sadly we were unable to walk to a cairn overlooking the bay. After seeing guests poor walking capabilities in the snow at Neko Harbour, the expedition team felt it was best to have a shorter walk today.

Paul and I enjoyed the walk to a point overlooking a bay where icebergs get stranded and live out the rest of their years. Iceberg graveyard.

We saw some penguins in their rookeries. Some had two chicks in their nests. The chicks were in various stages of groth, depending on when the eggs were laid and the chicks hatched.

In the afternoon Paul had a nap and I went on a zodiac cruise amongst icebergs. There were humpback whales, a crab seal and 3 leopard seals. As well as penguins swimming. It was a pleasant afternoon.

  • Orne Islands & Cuverville

    January 13, Bransfield Strait ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

The polar plunge took place this morning but Paul and I didn't go in.

We received a call, asking us if we would like accompany 2 BBC cameramen on a submersible dive this afternoon. Yes!

We had to sign a long non disclosure of information agreement. Having said that, we don't know anything as it was all hush hush in any case.

We then set off in a zodiac to a submersible, put special booties over our shoes, and climbed in. There was me, Paul , the pilot and the 2 BBC cameramen. Extra ballast had to be added because the submersible was still too light to go down - about 130 kgs in all.

We had a lovely long dive of about 1.5 hours compared to guest dives of 40 minutes. It was a lovely feeling to be down near the floor bed, looking at sponges of various types of starfish, fish, krill and other under water creatures. Paul's knees were stiff from sitting in the cramped cabin.

We arrived back at the surface, elated.

  • Harry Island & Cierva Cove

    January 14, Bransfield Strait ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

Paul and I missed doing a zodiac cruise near Harry Island this morning but went out this afternoon. We were unable to get too close to Base Primervara, an Argentinan research base because of lots of ice and the distance to travel between ship and the base. We did see a large leopard seals and a smaller leopard seal on bergy bits.

When we got back to the ship we sat in one of the hot tubs to defrost.

  • Bailey Head & Neptune's Bellows

    January 15, Bransfield Strait ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Guests were able to view a colony of penguins outside the crater of Deception Island before the ship made her way to the narrow entrance of the island. The narrow entrance is called Neptune's Bellows.

As we exited out of Neptune's Bellows we saw a zodiac near the impressive cliffs. There was a ship in Whalers Bay, a National Geographic ship.

  • Stancomb Cove, Telefon Bay, Deception Is

    January 15 in Antarctica ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Around midday the ship sailed through Deception Island's Caldera and headed into Telefon Bay.

    The weather was perfect.

We went ashore and had a nice 3km walk around a small crater. Views were gorgeous. Fortunately the walk went clockwise, with n easier gradient for ascent. Going up the steep part first - I think people would have lost the will to live. It was steep going down but it was a matter of being careful.

We saw 2 seals having a snooze on the beach as we headed back to the ship.

  • Arrival in Ushuaia

    January 17 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

After 2 days at sea we have arrived in Ushuaia, collecting the pilot on the way, to bring us into the port.

Because of the early evening arrival, guests and staff can go ashore to enjoy the evening and maybe have dinner in town. Tomorrow guests will go home and a new lot will come on board.

For us, we have to leave the ship 10 days earlier than expected, so we will fly out of Ushuaia tomorrow evening, rather than staying on for another cruise to finish Paul's contract.
