    Cape Tribulation

    Today we went for a day trip to Cape Tribulation. Cape Tribulation is about 180km north of Cairns within Daintree Nationalpark 🏞. The first hour on the bus brought us to Mossman Gorge.
    After getting an introduction on some rituals from a native Australian we walked through the beautiful rainforest to the Gorge. The rainforest really made it‘s name by some heavy tropical showers while walking.
    At the second bus stop we went on a boat for a ride on Daintree river to see the oldest rainforest on earth from the waterside. We also spotted some very rare birds, learned more about all the mangroves and we also saw quite a few salt water crocodiles 🐊 from 60cm up to almost 5 meters in length.
    For lunch we stopped at a rainforest resort nearby Cape Tribulation followed by another walk through the rainforest to a nice sandy beach. Unfortunately no swimming bacause of crocodiles and potential box jelly fishes in the water.    Читать далее

    Millaa Millaa falls

    Swimming, Waterfalls and Rainforest

    Today we are going to explore some swimming in natural lakes in the mountains south of Cairns. After a one hour drive we arrived at Babinda Boulders. A very nice Gorge, several waterfalls and waterwashed rocks in the river. Too early for me to swim 🏊‍♂️. Next stop will bring us to Josephine Falls. Again nice waterfalls but too dangerous to swim here because of 60mm rainfall last night.
    Now on the road for Millaa Millaa falls. Wow - very beautiful 20m waterfall in the middle of the rainforest. Went for a refreshing swim in front of the waterfall.
    Lunch was served nearby Millaa Millaa in a funny old pub. In the afternoon we visited an Australian farm and before heading back to Cairns a beautiful lake (Lake Echam) which was formed in the crater of an inactive Volcano..    Читать далее

    Snorkling in the outer Barrier reef

    The last day at the east coast we spent on a Catemaran at the edge of the continental shelf in the outer Barrier reef. We were snorkling on three different reef sites and had seen quite some fishes and big turtles 🐢. But compared to 28 years ago the reef looks about like a cemetary. Still nice but with lots of dead corals. Unfortunately no scuba diving for me today because we will fly to Perth in the evening. Hope the cat will bring us back to Cairns on time 😬.Читать далее

    Cycling into Downtown

    In the afternoon Andy gave me a bicycle with which I went into downtown (10km) to spend some time in town at the water and in the shopping streets. Perth is still the nicest city of all visited during this trip. It also changed since my last visit 20 years ago but also on the positive side.
    Even after driving our big Campervan on the left side of the roads for three weeks, cycling in a big city 🌃 on the left side was a bit weird in the beginning. Although most of the way I could go on a very nice cycling 🚴🏽‍♀️ path.    Читать далее

    In the sand dunes at Lancelin

    Today we drove 130km north to Lancelin. Lancelin is a small sleepy village at the ocean with some big sand dunes. The kids enjoyed sand boarding with the boards and me driving in the dunes with the 4WD. Sand boarding is quite different compared to snowboarding with a raceboard...

    On the way back to Perth we stopped at „Two Rocks“ to see the beautiful sunset in the ocean.    Читать далее

    In the morning we went to Perth for a walk through the beautiful Western Australian Botanical garden. Afterwards Tonia walked us through the University campus which is right next to the botanical garden and also looks similar to it. Great place to study 📖 and learn at the shore of the Swan river which is just in front of the University.Читать далее

    Perth - Geraldton / 430km

    Today we left Perth after getting our Landcruiser. The next 20 days we will drive more than 3‘000 km north and end up in the Kimberly Nationalpark north east of Broome.
    Part of that route (until Exmouth) we did 20 years ago. Still remember enough to be sure its worth it a second time. So much to see in between! Pinnacles, Kalbarri, Ningaloo and many more National parks 🏞.. Today we aleeady visited the Pinnacles Nationalpark. Wonderful! Can‘t wait for Monkey Mia, Corall bay and Ningaloo...Читать далее

    Geraldton - Denham / 435 Km

    Today was more or less a driving day. After disassembling the roof tent ⛺️ and having a coffee ☕️ in the cold we left Geraldton. In the interest of time we bypassed Kalbarri Nationalpark. We had seen it before and the children did not care 🤠.
    On the way to Denham we stopped at the stagmits after entering Monkey mia Nationalpark and little later at shell beach 🏖. Shell 🐚 beach consists a 100% of small white shells. Unfortunately most of them are now broken into little pieces. That was completely different last time. Thanks to Andy who gave us nets against the billions of flies. If you don‘t have one it‘s killing you!
    After arriving at Denham we spent some time in town and around our condominium and watched the beautiful sunset.
    For dinner we went into the most western Restaurant of Australia which is made completely out of little shells. The seafood served was delicious.    Читать далее

    Francois Peron Nationalpark / Monkey Mia

    After breakfast, refueling and shopping we entered the park 🏞 on a real 4WD track. The dirt road ended after 15 km at a beautiful lagoon with colorful water and a scenery like in paradise. Afterwards we made a quick stop at little lagoon abeam Denham before driving to Monkey Mia. Beautiful camping ground with great infrastructure. The only bad thing: It has billions of flies!! In the evening we met with Monique and Andy who drove all the way up from Perth (900km) in one day.Читать далее

    Wild Dolphins - Coral Bay / 585 km

    Monkey Mia is also known for the wild Dolphins 🐬 who appear at the beach every morning where they get fed with fish 🐠 (10% of their daily needs).
    We watched the four dolphins (2 female with their calfs) right from the waterline. Funny how they keep turning a bit to the side which lets them watch the people by having one eye outside of the water.
    Later in the morning we decided to drive all the way up to Coral Bay. 585km in 5.5 hours with no traffic and only two stops.    Читать далее

    Turquoise BayCape Range Nationalpark

    After a walk at the beach in Coral Bay we drove up north to Exmouth where we are staying for two nights at RAC camping.
    In the afternoon I chartered a plane to fly through Cape Range Nationalpark. Beautiful to see the Ningaloo reef from the air! Luckely we spotted two Whale 🐋 Sharks 🦈 out of the plane.Читать далее

    Swimming with Whale Sharks @ Cape Range

    Early in the morning we got picked up by Live Ningaloo for a 30 minutes drive to the Jetty within Cape Range Nationalpark. Together with only five Australian tourists we entered a little boat which brought us to the outer Ningaloo reef. After a short snorkling trip we got ready with wet suits and snorkling gear to be ready soon after a Whale Shark had been spotted. This happened quite soon and soon after we were close together in the Indian Ocean with a Whale Shark!!! After about 5-10 minutes it disappeared slowly in the deep of the Ocean. At the second chance we met with a Shark who was moving quite fast. We followed for more than 15 minutes before a second Whale shark appeared from the opposite side. The situation stressed the group a little bit because some (including Marc) had been in the path of the second Shark appeared from the blue. After a while we even met with a third Whale Shark.     Snorkling in Cape Range Nationalpark

    Today we left Exmouth to explore some beautiful beaches in the park. At Oyster Stack beach it was beautiful for snorkling in the shallow water of the inner reef. We spotted a black tipped reef shark, a scorpion fish 🐠, two blue dotted rays and many more colorful fishes. Another stop we made at the marvelous Turquois bay (aerial pictures).Читать далее

    In the morning we left Tom Price for the Karijini Nationalpark. After a short drive we setup our camping ⛺️ site with Andy and Monique. Soon after we entered the Dales Gorge where we spent almost half a day. The Gorge offered beautiful fauna, red rocks (iron), swimming in fresh water billabongs (Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool) and a very nice walk through the Gorge to Circular PoolЧитать далее

    Karijini NP / Hancock Gorge

    After breakfast we drove over 30km on dirt roads to see some other Gorges from lookout platforms. At Hancock Gorge we went down to the bottom over big rock steps and ladders. Reaching the bottom we followed a track called „Spider walk“. Some of the pictures show why it has become this name. The walk follows the Gorge through some very narrow creeks. Some of them filled with water. To reach the end of the track swimming and walking through quite deep (and cold) water was required. Only our Spiderman Marc made it to the end with dry feet.
    After returning to the camping ground a dream full scenery with the earth, pure nature and the increasing moon rising in the dawn could be seen.
    In the evening we cooked together with Monique and Andy the last time. Andy and Monique made our camping days a lot easier by their company, professional camping gear, the kitchen in the trailer and much more. Thank you very much and see you in Perth in one week.    Читать далее

    Driving, driving, driving. The first 240 km to Port Hedland have not been relaxing because of all the two way road train traffic from the mining industry. Needs some calculation to overtake such a 80m long vehicle which is driving 100km/h with opposite traffic...

    Once we met two big trucks carrying two even bigger Caterpillars which reached about 10m in height!

    Exactly 10 hours after departure we reached Broome in the dark but safely. This after only three stops (each 10-15 minutes) 🙈 for refueling ⛽️.

    Staircase to the moon

    Spent all day in Broome relaxing after three days in the bush and a lot of driving. I went for a walk to cable beach in the afternoon. It‘s an assumn beach with a width of almost 300m at low tide! Unfortunately no swimming because salt water crocodiles 🐊 are spotted here on a regular basis (last time four days ago).
    Every month Broome offers at full moon 🌕 a so called „staircase to the moon“ event which can be watched from two different places. We went to the Mangrove Hotel to watch this special happening.
    Incredible when the deep red full moon rises over the Ocean. After rising for 10-15 minutes it really looks as their would be a staircase to the moon. It was good luck to be in Broome for this special happening! Afterwards we went to the staircase markets in town to get some casual dinner.    Читать далее

    Kimberley

    Now getting ready for another 3-4 days in National parks in the Kimberley region northeast of Broome. Today heading into the Kimberleys. After 200km we will be driving only on dirt roads (Gibb river road) and 4 wheel drive paths. All food and water supplies are with us until end of the week.
    Just the broken windshield and GPS need to be replaced at the car before we will be on the road for another 1000km until return.
    Possibly more or less just occasionally some weak internet through the week.    Читать далее

    Broome - Kimberley / 450 km

    Long drive again today. First 220 km on Northern Highway to Derby and then 230km via Gibb river road more or less on dirt roads to the Camping ground nearby Bell Gorge in the King Leopold Conservation park. Driving on Gibb river road was not relaxing due to quite rough road conditions and cattles crossing the road without notice out of the bush...

    Nearby Derby we made a short visit to the Aboriginal center of art. Very interesting movie about the culture, art and history of the Aboriginals from the Kimberly region.

    Beautiful landscapes while driving into the Kimberleys. Now camping here for two nights without power in the pure nature...

    First time since 1994 without access to the outer world for three days. Special situation for someone being online all the time. But there is not much to be missed....    Читать далее

    Bell Gorge / 80 km

    After a very hot night we left the camping ground for a short drive to Bell gorge. It was already hot again in the morning right after sunrise. A ten minute walk brought us to a variety of different pools all belonging to Bell gorge. We spent several hours in the gorge and swam through the different pools each with a different shape and from shallow to deep. What a refreshness although the water was very warm.
    In mid afternoon we drove 60km return to a small roadhouse just to refuel the car for the next day. Had a nice chat with the owner of the fuel station living at Gibb river road without any neighbours (other than some Aboriginals).

    We stayed a second night at Silent grove camping ground without power and only with some LED lights and torches.    Читать далее

    Windjana Gorge / Tunnel Creek / 290 km

    Today we visited two National parks in the Kimberleys on our way from Silent grove to Fitzroy crossing. After 130 km on rough gravel roads we walked through Windjana Gorge. We saw more than 30 freshwater crocodiles in the remaining water of the gorge 🐊. Some of which very close with no fence in between. Certainly we used the opportunity to make some croc selfies 😊. Australia had a record dryness „wet“-season this year in the north-west. The water levels in the gorges show very well that there was hardly any rain. Wonder what will happen to the crocs if the gorge may fully dry out during winter season.

     The second stop was at Tunnel Creek. We walked through a wide tunnel from one end of the gorge to the other only with our torch lights. All together about 600m in length with one light hole in the middle. At some places in the water up to our knees. Funny at the beginning of the tunnel we walked by some meters from two crocodiles.

    In the afternoon we left Tunnel Creek for another 1.5 hour drive to Fitzroy crossing. While driving into the camping ground more than fifty wallabies welcomed our car just off the road.

    Right before setting up the tent Fiona noticed some air coming out of a rear tire. Twenty minutes later the wheel was replaced and my hands greasy and full of dirt. Happy I could change the wheel at the camping ground instead of on Northern highway the next day.    Читать далее
