    La Coruña

    Porting in La Coruña, the closest European port to New York we are taken to understand. As Ben said, we seem to be Plan B people - we'd spent time considering getting the train to Santiago de Compostela for the day but with poor weather predicted, a 45-minute walk to the train station and unhelpful train times, we stayed in La Coruña instead.

    Walking up the Avenida de Mariña, we passed the glass-fronted buildings and headed for the castle, to walk around the hammerhead promontory of the city. Despite the grey day, the coast was beautiful, and as we walked through the Tower of Hercules natural park the landscape reminded us of Anglesey. The closer we got to the Tower, the more the wind picked up - such was the force of the wind some of the museums in the town had actually closed. The Tower itself is apparently originally Roman and the oldest functioning lighthouse in the world.
