    Barbados

    Early start out to Manchester but a clear run, both of us feeling a bit brain-fogged with the end of term barely in the rearview mirror. We grabbed breakfast in the airport, whilst I took the opportunity to download some papers for the essay due next week...eek! A painfully slow boarding of the plane, but largely hassle free flight, albeit I was sat behind Ben. Did manage to read the whole of The Way of the Argosi though, while Ben binged Three Musketeers films next to a chap who kept on talking to him!

    Painless transfer to the Port, although our luggage took ages to arrive. We enjoyed some free prosecco and a couple of pints on the back deck as we sailed away from Barbados heading towards Curacao under a beautiful full moon.    Read more

    At sea (as always!)

    December 15, 2024, Caribbean Sea ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

    First day and a day at sea, and a chance to catch up on some sleep. I unthinkingly ventured on to the balcony before breakfast to be assaulted with very hot and muggy conditions! After breakfast in the buffet, we listened to a very interesting police detective talk about how to solve murders.

    The pools on the top deck of the ship were crammed full given the beautiful day, and the bar downstairs full of football fans watching a match. So we retreated to our cabin for a quiet pint and tried to brave the balcony but after five minutes decided it was just too hot!

    An afternoon spent puzzling in the cabin out of the heat before black tie night. We took vast advantage of the free prosecco at the first captain's welcome, before a lovely four course dinner and back to the second speech for more free prosecco! We briefly ventured outside but even in the night the heat was still stifling, unaided by the fact we accidentally wandered into the smokers area. We will not be visiting that again.    Read more

    Curacao

    Last time we were here we went kayaking, so we decided to spend today in the port town of Willemstad. Although in 31° heat, that proved tiring. After breakfast on the balcony, we headed put through the Rig Fort and over the Queen Emma bridge towards the colourful dockside buildings. We hunted for the Curacao Parliament before coming upon an understated building, and then headed through the streets of the main town. We passed street art and markets before wandering furthering out of town and finding a lovely coffee shop. The free WiFi here was a boon and meant we were able to find a picture of Parliament that looked more accurate! After a few iced coffees, we headed back and found it, only to be told be a security guard that the chamber was in a building across the square. Here a guard sent us around the side of the building where eventually an incredibly knowledgeable and friendly guard took us up to the public gallery. Apparently Parliament was meant to be sitting but wasn't yet because they weren't quorate. Wandering back through Fort Amsterdam past the Prime Minister's residence, we visited the Maritime Museum of Curacao before giving into the heat and heading back to the ship for an afternoon of reading out of the sun.Read more

    Snorkelling in Bonaire

    We docked with our cabin facing out to sea in Bonaire, overlooking the small island of Klein Bonaire where we had booked some snorkelling for today. After breakfast on our balcony, we walked out to our catamaran to head first to the National Marine Park, where we snorkelled over the reef. Our guide said he spotted a lionfish (unusual this close to the shore) but alas we did not...maybe not such a bad thing given how poisonous they are. We did however see lots of fish, of all different sizes and colours. The coral was sadly bleached by sea temperatures and the guide said it was getting worse.

    Back on the catamaran, we headed to Klein Bonaire where we hopped off and snorkelled along the reef edge. Some of the massive fish were very bold and seemed entirely unbothered by our presence! We spent a little time drying out on the top deck of the boat which we had to ourselves, and chatting to the captain and guide before heading back to port.

    Kralendijk itself is pretty small, which we knew from last time. So after bimbling through a market and around the shopping street, we found a bar so I could use the WiFi...alas, the service was lamentable (although we did get to see some lizards).

    I spent much of the afternoon reading papers for my essay in preparation for writing it tomorrow. Dinner looked a little dull, so we grabbed a drink and the crib board, and whilst Ben won all three rounds it inevitably led to a chat with some other crib players who wanted to know why we cut the cards before dealing.     At Work At Sea

    December 18, 2024, Caribbean Sea ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

    Today had been set aside to write an essay I had due, so after breakfast I set to it. Ben went to see the police detective's second talk, this time on a cold case, but otherwise spent the day reading and relaxing.

    The evening was black tie so we had a glass of wine in the Glass House before dinner, and then came back to read (I finished the Crimson Moth).

    On to St Lucia tomorrow for an overnight stop. Been here twice before and was not particularly enamoured either time, so we we've booked a rainforest hike to try and get us away from Castries.    Read more

    St Lucia Rainforests

    Knowing we don't particularly enjoy Castries, we booked a shore excursion determined to see a bit more of St Lucia. Jumping on a bus, the roads out of Castries wove through hairpin bends out of the port, south towards Soufriere. The views across the island as we went were stunning, but the roads and bends were a little alarming! We stopped briefly at a couple of lookout points, over Marigot Bay and the twin peaks of the Pitons, before descending into Soufriere to start our hike which was auspiciously urban but quickly gave way to rainforest. Our guide pointed out local plants including frankincense, cinnamon, coriander and more. As we walked, rain storms blew through bringing heavy showers followed by glorious sunshine on repeat.

    The waterfall was apparently suffused with mineral laden mud. Unsurprisingly I did not care and simply wanted to get in the water, so whilst others coated themselves in mud, we jumped into the waterfall and had a fabulous time.

    The trek away from the waterfall seemed to be endlessly upwards along makeshift muddy stairs. But the rainforest was beautiful and the trek was fun. At the end, we bussed to a local plantation for lunch and a tour which included trying raw sugar cane and cocoa beans.

    After a long day, we dozed on the journey back as it was an identical route with roads and drop offs just as concerning as the way out.

    As we're in port over night, we grabbed a drink on the back deck as the sunset , where we were treated to a show of music and fire breathers taking on the port side, before dinner and bed.    Read more

    St Lucia Parliament

    We hadn't planned a lot for today. Most of the shore excursions visited similar places than we visited yesterday and we didn't really fancy any of them. So we had breakfast on the balcony and watched the news, before deciding just to walk out into Castries to stretch our legs.

    We stopped by the St Lucia Parliament to see if we could visit and were greeted by the Parliamentary Clerk, Ezma, who not only offered to show us the chamber, but invited the Speaker to meet us too! So armed with the knowledge of these two, we visited the single chamber (but a bicameral Parliament - they share the chamber) and learnt so much! The Speaker was actually an international overseer at the 2024 election and at Westminster Abbey for the 2022 jubilee celebrations. A superb visit!

    We wandered back to the ship for lunch, stopping for a drink in the port to grab some WiFi which was more trouble than it was worth. Also, I've woken up with a small cold which is very frustrating.    Read more

    Everyone's in St Lucia!

    After spending the afternoon trying to sleep off my cold, I woke in time for sail away. However all the other cruise ships had to leave first! So we waved goodbye to the Norwegian Viva and Viking Sea who passed so close by that the passengers were shouting 'Merry Christmas' to one another!Read more

    It's hot in Grenada

    We ported up early in Grenada with the promise of rain from the Captain. There was no rain. That sounds like a positive. But the strong sun made for close and oppressive heat. After breakfast on the balcony we planned to walk to Parliament. We agonised over shore excursions but we trekked the rainforest last time we were here so we thought we'd start by exploring the port. Before we even left the port however we bumped into a barmaid from The Star who is also on our cruise!

    We walked up the stairs to Fort George and were graced with a fabulous little hummingbird darting around. We knew the Fort was closed but it gave good views over the town nonetheless, before we trekked on to Parliament. The original building burnt down in 2018. Passing that on the way, we carried on up and up at a steady plod under the beating sun. Sadly when we got there, the views of the new building were limited from the roadside.

    Wandering back down through the bustling town we headed for the ship to escape the heat!    Read more

    Day 3 at sea

    A quiet day today. Went to see the police detective's talk about close protection and other than that spent the day reading and puzzling. Black tie this evening but the menu wasn't super exciting so we holed up in the Glass House instead and drank wine!Read more
