    Pisco

    13 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today, I went to a place called: Museo del Pisco. Seriously, one of the best cocktails I ever tried. It was a bit strong, so we sticked by one because I have Spanish class now hihi.

During cooking class, I met some people. I spoke English for 10 minutes with a guy from Belgium and afterwards we discovered that we both speak Dutch (haha so stupid..). Afterwards, we went to this place and had a Pisco. Definitely a place to go in Cusco.Читать далее

    New challenge accepted!

    13 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Mis nuevas prácticas! Hospital Santa Rosa.

It is called Santa Rosa and way bigger than my previous clinic and it is in Cusco. It is 10 mins walking to the bus stop, then the bus for 15 min then I am already there! I will work from 8-13 o clock every day. When I arrive I will help them with receiving patients and getting their files in the fileroom (paperwork). Afterwards, I can go to the nurses rooms.

They have different rooms, vaccinations, an emergency room (really small but interesting, there was a kid with a burn wound when I was there) and the obstetrics and children observation. There they meet vital functions, ask and check if the baby's and moms are okay etcetera. I think I am going to work a lot with baby's and moms and I have absolutely NO experience in that haha.

Children observation, information about safe sex, helping mothers with heir baby's, is a really big thing in Peru. Women don't have the knowledge we have in Europe - therefore they don't notice when problems occur. For example, when a mom bleeds during pregnancy, they have no idea that that is a bad sign.

I will still be alone in this placement, but at least I can leave home at 7:30 in the morning. I just need to make friends in another way. Every tuesday and thursday there will come a Peruvian nurse (she went with me today, Dina) to check on me and help me out.

    New challenge accepted!

    Hamantay 1

    14 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

At 4am my alarm went off. A taxi picked me up from home and we went to a square where we waited for a bus. We went all the way from Cusco to the are of the Salkantay mountain (highest mountain in South America).

The drive was terrifying. We were letterly driving on the border of a cliff and everybody was so scared cause if we would fall off, we would be dead. Anyway, I did some meditation and survived haha.

Here I was with Stephanie, a German girl, Benoit, a Belgium guy and 2 girls from the USA (Portland). We had to go all the way up to the mountain, cross rivers and with the altitude, it was not easy at all.

    14 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

When we arrived, I was a bit disappointed, the hike was so hard (2 hours going up) and there were only clouds... But then...

The clouds start disappearing and you could see the beautiful lake of Hamantay. The lake has green/blue-ish colors because of the plants that are inside of it.

By the way, it was SO cold up there!

    Corruption

    15 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

It is so sad to realize this, but it is so true. And that is why I want to share it here.

Even volunteer companies, that are supposed to help people, are corrupted.

I spoke to Yolanda last week, she is one of the daughters in my host family. She told me that they get 9 soles per person a day for sleeping in their house. That is 3 euros. Maximo nivel told her that she was not aloud to tell the people how much they gave her (I know why... Unfortunately). I give 30euros a night for sleeping here. Where does all this 27 euros go?
Sure: to the people working in a higher function within Maximo Nivel. Whom are western people, not even Peruvian.

One of the directors of Maximo Nivel is a Dutch girl of my age. Why is she sitting behind that desk? Why not a Peruvian person with a higher education? If this company wants to help people, that is what they should do.

Today I spoke with James, who lives in my house. He wanted to donate skateboards to a project here in Cusco. Maximo nivel told him that he should do it through them. James didn't wanted to do that, cause he heard stories that Maximo Nivel keeps the donations. Last year, a rich man came to Cusco and donated 2000dollars to a project through Maximo nivel. Six months later he came back and asked to the project what they did with the money. The Peruvian man said: thank you so much for your 200 (!!!) Dollars, it was a great help for new school books. What?!

They delete and make sure that bad comments on social media get removed. They don't pay the host families well as they should, the western white people are still the people that make it within the company and the main goal of the company is not helping people... It is making money.

Last week, when I was unhappy about my internship, I started thinking. "Were you really about to expect that a girl that comes alone to Peru, is happy to travel 3 hours alone a day to her placement?" No, but my opinion doesn't count. I could put a bad review somewhere, but they would remove it anyway.

Yess, it makes me sad to realize that even a volunteer organisation is corrupted, money does not go where it should and they turn things around in a way that it is profitable for them and not for the poor. Donations disappear and they don't want host families to speak about their positions towards the volunteers.

Though it is the reality nowadays. It doesn't help to be sad about it. Every big volunteer place will be like this. What I do want, is that people put a question mark with everything they do/see in life. Not everything is as honest as it seems.

The world is more corrupted than you think. Unfortunately.

    Bebes, bebes y más bebes

    16 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This morning, I arrived a bit early. On the second picture you can see the queue in front of the hospital.

I said hi to doctor Marcos, which apparently is something you need to do (hierarchy in South America is higher than in Europe). After that I went to the nursery, which in Netherlands is comparable to a 'GGD'. It is a kind of check up on kids, if they grow good, don't have problems eating, sleeping, no diseases and mentally make progress.

We received a lot of moms and baby's. There are baby's between 1 month and 12 months. My main task today was weighting them, measuring them and the size of their head (in case of hydrocephalus). I sit next to Eva, who is a nurse and I mainly just followed her and did what she told me to do. They also give vaccinations, which I probably will do the end of this week.

Technically, this is easy for me. I am used to work on an emergency department where nursing goes to another level. This is quite simple. Though, with all the Spanish speaking, this is super complicated.

So difficult to work in Spanish! I can follow them when they speak directly to me, slowly but when they speak fast or are in a hurry, I don't understand them. I hope it will get better the end of this week. :)

They are neither super super friendly when I don't understand them, it was different when I started working in Denmark, when I didn't understood them there in Danish, they were quite sweet. Well, I don't care, it is at least a nice place with all the baby's and moms.

Also travelling is less than 30 min, it costs me only 80 solo cents which is 20 euro cents per way. So far so good, let's see how it will go!

    Diana

    16 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Another tandem conversation. Today I went after my Spanish class for a meeting with Diana.

Diana is 22 years old, works in the airport and studied Tourism. She wants to learn English for work. I noticed that her English is quite bad and my Spanish way better (wow did I really just say this haha?!). Diana likes to drink wine and listen to music, just like me. So she proposed me to have a wine one day after our classes. We both have classes from 5-6pm every day.Читать далее

    Salsaaaa

    17 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Okay, I still can't dance like some of them, but I am a bit closer!

It was actually a lot of fun. I met two girls from the United States. There were chips with guacamole. The salsa went really good. Although, with the Bachata I kind of quit. Not because I couldn't but more because that is too close for me, I just told them that I have a boyfriend, easy excuse but it is even true! Even if I would be single, this is way too weird for my Dutch habits.
I would like to try this with Nacho though haha ;)

    Trabajo

    18 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

This is what I do. Weighting baby's, measuring them, checking how they look (skin, hair etc), giving vaccinations and then we speak with the moms for about 20 min, we tell them how to take care of their baby, where to be careful with and what they should eat. Also a big part of the work is paperwork, insurance, government etcetera.

In general it is all going quite well! The technical part is easy for me, it is just that working in Spanish is not so easy ;)

    Paddy's

    18 октября 2017 г., Перу ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

After my Spanish class, I met Bernoit (de Gentenaar) and we decided to eat some quesodillas and drink a beer. Last Sunday I went with him and a German girl to this pub and we got in touch with this older man, sitting on the bench, you can see him in the corner of the picture.

When I was on the toilet, he told Bernoit and Stephanie that he was looking for a Peruvian women (say whaaat? ) And now he was here on a date. It was really really funny to observe this.

Well, anyway. Bernoit is a real Belgium guy, he talks and acts like a farmer and honestly I can barely understand him in Dutch sometimes. He misses his Belgium beers and mussels a lot (haha).

I went home by taxi and saw James (from USA) when I came home. He told me that he took a taxi today without a sign and he said: "I was like, Iris would freak out right now". Haha.. So my 'I am too careful' attitude is already seen as something funny.

I told James the story that I got recorded in a taxi yesterday and I found it so weird (like a voice recorder). James told me that it is a way of communicating in the taxis with the central office for information, routes etcetera. So it is luckily something I don't need to worry about!

Well, I have only been in one bar so far in Cusco, which is Paddy's. Can I call it now my tribe bar? (Stamkroeg) haha just kidding.
