  • The Oldest Bled Cellar

    8 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Tonight we finally made it to the correct restaurant: The Oldest Bled Cellar at Old Bled House.

And honestly… with names like Old Bled Cellar and The Oldest Bled Cellar, I’m convinced these places are trying to confuse tourists on purpose 😄

The food was absolutely fantastic though: porcini soup, lamb ragout with traditional Slovenian pasta, baked octopus, and Slovenian rosé wine. A perfect ending to a very full day.

  • Savica Waterfall

    9 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The day started a bit differently than planned, as Sanjay wasn’t feeling well and stayed back at the hotel to rest. So mom, Thomas, Kinga and I headed out to explore the region on our own.

First stop: Savica Waterfall. After a short uphill walk, we reached the viewpoint — and wow. The waterfall itself is spectacular, but the open valley views toward Lake Bohinj were just as stunning.

Naturally, this turned into another Brews & Views moment with fresh coffee overlooking the mountains.

  • Restaurant Veranda, Dovje

    9 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

On the drive toward the Russian Chapel, hunger kicked in — and luckily we spotted Restaurant Veranda.

The parking lot was packed with local cars, which usually tells you everything you need to know. After a refreshing beer, a comforting local beef soup, and smoked trout, we were fully recharged and ready to continue deeper into the mountains.Okumaya devam et

  • Russian Chapel

    9 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Hidden below the Vršič Pass sits the peaceful Russian Chapel.
Built by Russian prisoners of war during World War I to honor fellow workers who died constructing the mountain road, the chapel carries a quiet and reflective atmosphere. Beautiful architecture surrounded by nature — and an important reminder of why peace matters.Okumaya devam et

  • Lake Jasna

    9 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Another quick stop, another impossibly beautiful Slovenian lake: Lake Jasna.
The sharp mountain ridges surrounding the lake almost feel Dolomite-like, especially under blue skies with the water reflecting everything around it. Peaceful, calm, and ridiculously photogenic.Okumaya devam et

  • Oštarija Peglez’n

    9 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Back in Bled, it was time to say goodbye to mom, Thomas, and Kinga for a few days, before everyone continued on different routes.

Later in the evening, I made my way to Oštarija Peglez’n for a fantastic dinner: Slovenian white wine, octopus salad, and calamari fritti. A very good way to end the day.Okumaya devam et

  • Fort Kluže

    10 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Leaving Bled behind this morning, we decided against driving the steep road over the Vršič Pass and instead took the route toward the Soča Valley via Italy and Fort Kluže.

The scenery along the road was incredible — mountains, valleys, and reminders of World War I scattered throughout the landscape. Old ruins and fortifications still cling to the hillsides, making the entire drive feel both beautiful and deeply historic.Okumaya devam et

  • Soča River, Kozjak Waterfall & Napoleon

    10 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

How is this place even real?

We followed the stunning Soča River through the valley until reaching the suspension bridge viewpoint. The colours of the water are unbelievable — glowing shades of blue and green that almost look artificial.

From there, we continued on foot to Kozjak Waterfall. The trail alone is spectacular, crossing bridges and winding through narrow rock passages before revealing the waterfall hidden inside a cave-like chamber.

Finally, a quick stop at Napoleon Bridge for even more Soča views and photos.

  • Kanal

    10 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Brief stop in Kanal to admire the colorful houses, the bridge crossing the Soča, and the peaceful atmosphere of the town. Quiet, photogenic, and sitting beautifully along the river.

  • Marcus by Sirk – Brda Wine Region

    10 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

The Brda Wine Region instantly made me wish we had planned more time here. Rolling vineyards, hilltop villages, and gorgeous scenery everywhere.

Despite running late already, we had to stop at Marcus by Sirk — mostly because of the name 😄

The wine shop is usually closed on Sundays, but they kindly opened for a tasting just for us. Their sparkling wines are made using the traditional Champagne method, and both the white and rosé were excellent. Naturally, a few bottles joined the road trip.

  • Osteria Becco

    10 Mayıs, İtalya ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Dinner at Osteria Becco marked our first proper evening in Trieste. Cozy atmosphere, good food, slightly slow service… but overall a very enjoyable start to the Italian chapter of the trip.

  • Breakfast with Marco at Maravea

    11 Mayıs, İtalya ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Great start to the day in Trieste with my old friend Marco, who came over from Treviso to spend the day with us.

We met at Maravea — a modern café that blends traditional Triestine coffee culture with a more contemporary third-wave approach. Great design, excellent coffee, and lovely service.

The morning started rainy, but somehow the weather cleared just in time for breakfast outside. Perfect start to a day of exploring and catching up.

  • Trieste Walking Tour

    11 Mayıs, İtalya ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

After a quick stop at the hotel, we met our guide at Piazza del Ponte Rosso near the giant Maria Theresa coin sculpture.

The walking tour turned into a fantastic introduction to Trieste’s layered history. Highlights included the Canal Grande, the statue of James Joyce, the Serbian Orthodox church, Sant’Antonio, the historic La Bomboniera bakery, the Roman Theatre, the Jewish quarter, and finally the massive Piazza Unità d’Italia by the sea.Okumaya devam et

  • Castello di San Giusto & Cathedral

    11 Mayıs, İtalya ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

After lunch we made our way uphill toward Castello di San Giusto, first passing the ancient Arco di Riccardo and stepping into Santa Maria Maggiore.

Huge thanks to our guide for revealing the secret elevator hidden inside a nearby parking garage — because those uphill stairs looked brutal 😄

At the top, we enjoyed panoramic city views from the war memorial before focusing on the cathedral itself. The mosaics, Roman columns, and sheer age of the building make Cathedral of San Giusto feel incredibly atmospheric and historic.

Afterwards it was time to say goodbye to Marco at the train station.

  • RoaTS Coffee Roastery

    11 Mayıs, İtalya ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

After saying goodbye to Marco at the train station, Sanjay and I made one more coffee stop at RoaTS Specialty Coffee — and what a cool spot!

Modern third-wave coffee culture right in the middle of Trieste’s deeply traditional coffee scene. Great atmosphere, super friendly service, excellent pastries, and of course beans coming home with me once again 😄

I ordered two capo in B — the wonderfully specific Triestine coffee term for what most places would simply call an espresso macchiato served in a glass. Tiny detail, but I love how seriously Trieste takes its coffee culture.

  • Breakfast at Caffè degli Specchi

    12 Mayıs, İtalya ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Wanting at least one truly traditional Triestine coffee experience, we headed to Caffè degli Specchi for breakfast.

We made it there just before the weather turned — and then absolute chaos erupted outside. Thunder, lightning, sideways rain, violent wind gusts… people came rushing into the café looking for shelter while we sat inside watching the spectacle unfold. It genuinely felt a bit like a Titanic lifeboat scene 😄

Meanwhile, breakfast arrived: I went fully classic Italian with pastries and a tiny moka pot served alongside hot milk, while Sanjay chose a heartier Balkan-style breakfast. Elegant historic café meets apocalyptic thunderstorm — quite the experience.

  • Illy Shop

    12 Mayıs, İtalya ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

No visit to Trieste would feel complete without stopping at the illy Caffè Shop.

After all, Trieste is home to illycaffè and the famous Illy University. The store itself looked incredibly polished and luxurious, but the staff were wonderfully warm and welcoming — especially once they learned we had come all the way from Canada. Naturally, some beans had to come home with me.Okumaya devam et

  • Serbian Orthodox Church & Café Nero

    12 Mayıs, İtalya ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Since it had been closed on Monday, we returned to visit the beautiful Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Spyridon.

Orthodox churches always feel visually overwhelming in the best possible way — gold, icons, colours, details everywhere you look. Absolutely stunning interior.

Afterwards, I stopped for a quick caffè nero — the Triestine version of espresso, served in a glass.

  • Piran

    12 Mayıs, Slovenya ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

    How is Piran this beautiful?!

We parked outside town and walked along the waterfront into the old town just as the storms finally cleared and the sun came out. First stop: lunch at Fritolin pri Cantini — essentially a tiny hole-in-the-wall seafood spot with outdoor seating on the square nearby. The fried seafood platter was incredible.

From there, we wandered along the seawall toward the Piran Lighthouse, passed the mermaid statue, watched surfers riding the windy conditions, and enjoyed the insane Adriatic scenery.

One particularly wild detail: from the tip of Piran you can see four countries — Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, and even the mountains of Austria in the distance.

We continued uphill toward Cathedral of St. George, climbed the campanile in heavy winds, and eventually walked all the way to the old city walls for even more spectacular views over the red rooftops and sea.

This town is honestly one of the prettiest places I’ve seen in a long time.
