  • Shuanglin Temple

    8 de setembro de 2024, China ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Today we took a day trip and visited the famous Shuanglin Temple. Right outside of Pingyao and about a 20 min cab ride. It's known for its collection of over 2,000 intricately crafted clay statues, many of which date back to the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The temple is about 6 kilometers southwest of Pingyao and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Ancient City of Pingyao.

In addition to interesting architecture and history, there were art students molding figures from clay. They drew inspiration from the statues of the prominent temple guardians - a favorite of mine!

  • Return to the Shaolin Temple

📍 **Shaolin Monastery - A Journey Through Time**

It’s been 39 years since I last visited the iconic **Shaolin Monastery** ⛩️, and I’m amazed at how much this important historical site has improved since then ⏳✨. Known as the birthplace of **Chan Buddhism** 🧘‍♂️ and **Shaolin Kung Fu** 🥋, this place continues to inspire awe.

Dating back to 495 AD 📜, the monastery has seen its share of history, including being burned down in 1928 🔥. Thankfully, it has been restored 🛠️, preserving its deep cultural significance. We explored various temples 🏯 and wandered through the peaceful **Pagoda Forest** 🌲, home to 240 stone pagodas 🪨 that honor the lives of prominent monks.

A definite highlight was witnessing a **martial arts demonstration** 👊, unfortunately was not authentic and did not showcase the skill and heritage Shaolin is renowned for.

Overall, the blend of history and culture, made today’s visit unforgettable 💫.

We couldn’t have picked a better time to visit Xi’an—right in the middle of the **Autumn Festival**! 🎑 The city was buzzing with excitement, lights, and traditions that made our trip extra special. ✨ Did you know this festival is all about family reunions, giving thanks, and moon appreciation? 🌕

🌟 **Fun Fact**: The **Terracotta Army** was just as impressive as we’d imagined! Over 8,000 warriors stand guard, and it’s mind-blowing to think they’ve been protecting Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s tomb for over 2,000 years. 🏺⚔️

We strolled the **Xi’an City Wall**, taking in the festive atmosphere as lanterns lit up the skyline. 🏮 The locals celebrated with mooncakes—delicious pastries filled with sweet or savory flavors—so naturally, we had to try a few! 🥮😋

The streets of the **Muslim Quarter** were even more vibrant than usual, packed with vendors selling **lamb skewers**, **biangbiang noodles**, and **Rou Jia Mo**. 🍜🥙 And of course, there were plenty of mooncakes to go around! • The Incredible Terra Cotta Warriors

    14 de setembro de 2024, China ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

📍 **Exploring the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xi'an, China** 🇨🇳🐉🦅

Craig and I spent the day walking through one of the world’s most fascinating archaeological treasures—the **Terra Cotta Army** in Xi'an, and it was absolutely surreal! 🤯🌏

This army of over **8,000 life-sized statues** was created to protect Emperor **Qin Shi Huang** in the afterlife ⚔️👑. It wasn’t just warriors either—there were also **musicians**, **acrobats**, **strongmen**, and **servants** 🎶💪🤹‍♂️. Instead of sacrificing real people, these statues were made to ensure the emperor’s power continued beyond death.

We started at **Pit 1**, where thousands of soldiers stand in battle formation 🏟️👀. Then came **Pit 2**, filled with archers, cavalry, and infantry 🏇🏹, and finally **Pit 3**, the command center with high-ranking officers and chariots 🏛️🚶‍♂️.

The **horse and chariot exhibit** 🐎🚖 was stunning, but what really amazed us were the vibrant **colors and patterns** that once adorned the warriors and the underground city itself 🌈🏯—from the flooring to the ornate architectural details, the entire complex was once a vivid display of reds, blues, and golds.

Off in the distance, we could see a tree-covered hill ⛰️🌳, marking where the emperor’s actual **tomb** remains buried in a **pyramid-shaped mound**. It's still underground and not open to the public. Legends say it's filled with treasures, but also protected by **mercury traps** that would have poisoned intruders 💀🧪. Very Tomb Raider-esque! 🎥⚔️

Since the discovery of the Terra Cotta Warriors in 1974, **over 400 other tombs** have been unearthed in China, showing us just how much ancient history is still hidden beneath the surface. And no wonder—it’s even been named the **8th Wonder of the World** and is a proud **UNESCO World Heritage Site** 🏆🌍.

It was just Craig and me, unraveling the mysteries of the ancient world. Who else is ready to explore this incredible piece of history? 🐉🦅 #TravelAdventures #XiAn #TerraCottaWarriors #8thWonder #UNESCO #AncientChina #HistoryExplorers

  • 📍 Leshan Giant Buddha 🛕

    18 de setembro de 2024, China ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

📍 Leshan Giant Buddha 🛕—what an incredible experience! Standing at a towering 71 meters, this is the *largest* stone Buddha in the world 🌍, carved into the red sandstone cliffs of Sichuan over 1,200 years ago during the Tang Dynasty 🏯. It took *90 years* to complete!

We started our adventure with a walk up the well-paved steps 🚶‍♀️—278 narrow steps from the top of the Buddha’s head to its feet. Along the way, we explored the beautiful Lingyun Temple ⛩️, soaking in the spiritual atmosphere and learning about the rich history of the site.

As part of the temple’s tradition, I also rang the **giant bronze bell** 🔔, known as the **Lingyun Temple Bell**. Cast in the Ming Dynasty, this bell is *over 3 meters tall* and weighs *more than 10 tons*! It was believed that ringing the bell could ward off evil spirits and bring peace to the land, and I was lucky enough to take part in this ancient ritual 🙏.

Fun fact: the Buddha was built to calm the turbulent waters where the Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers meet 🌊—and it worked!

After exploring the temples and marveling at the Buddha’s massive scale (those toenails are as big as a person!), we finished with a scenic 30-minute boat ride 🚤, giving us a breathtaking panoramic view of the Buddha from the river. Seeing it from the water really puts its immense size into perspective!

This was such a unique combination of nature, history, and spirituality 🙌. If you’re in Sichuan, you *have* to experience this for yourself!

📍 Mount Qingcheng 🏞️—a journey through the roots of Taoism and nature’s serenity!

We had the chance to explore this sacred mountain, the **birthplace of Taoism**, where the philosopher **Zhang Ling** founded the doctrine of Chinese Taoism in 142 CE. The spiritual atmosphere here is unlike anywhere else, with lush green forests and mist-covered peaks that seem to transport you to another world 🌿.

From there, the hike continued up steps carved into the hillside, winding through serene landscapes and past peaceful streams. Along the way, we visited several Taoist temples, including the **Shangqing Temple**, which is said to be one of the most important on the mountain.
