After everyone had woken up, we had breakfast right around the corner. After breakfast we walked around the historic town center. We had visited the fantastic Gold Museum. The museum featured collections of early gold, silver, and Platinum works from the indigenous people of Columbia. There were also exhibits explaining the process for crafting different gold pieces.

We had signed up for a walking tour of Bogota, which featured the main sites of the city. The weather was overcast but was sunny towards the end of the tour.

  • The Views of Monserrate

    5 April 2023, Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After our morning coffee at our Airbnb, we headed to the base of Monserrate to take the tram up to the lookout points overlooking the city.

We learned the Monserrate is a mountain that dominates the city center of Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. It rises to 3,152 meters above sea level and is a popular tourist attraction - we were in quite a line for a weekday afternoon.

Our visit to Monserrate was an unforgettable experience. We took the tram up the mountain and were rewarded with breathtaking views of the city below. The tram ride itself was an adventure, as we ascended at a steep angle and watched the cityscape unfold before us. The sign on the tram said capacity was not to exceed 80- There were violations - Lol!!!

At the top of Monserrate, we explored the beautiful church and gardens. The church, dedicated to El Señor Caído (The Fallen Lord), is a pilgrimage site for many Colombians.

The weather was sometimes sunny or overcast. It was nice that the rain held out till late afternoon.

One of the highlights of our visit was dining at one of the restaurants on Monserrate. We enjoyed delicious Colombian cuisine while taking in the stunning views of Bogotá. We found a family operated eatery with a great menu. The service was very friendly and the food was tasty. Brad and I had the beef steak with fries, Kristy had the arepa (a ground corn treat), and Craig had a traditional Colombian chicken soup.

Before we heading down, Kristy led us to a path that led to a gate - she’s an excellent tour guide…😅!

As we descended back down the mountain on the tram, we enjoyed the commanding views of Bogota’s cityscape. It was a highlight of our trip to Bogota, Colombia!

  • Brad’s Retirement Dinner

    5 April 2023, Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

After resting up some from our day of exploring Monserrate, and visiting some museums we headed out to dinner. Our Uber picked us up and we went across town. It was a 30 min car ride and our driver ran red lights almost hit a pedestrian but anyway we made it to our destination.

We arrived at Andres Restaurant in Bogota to celebrate Brad’s retirement, and were greeted with Carnival inspired performers dancing and a woman defying gravity while swinging from ropes above. The atmosphere of the restaurant was fun and high energy.

The decor was eclectic and entertaining with many of those spaces filled with brass and percussion players and costumed dancers, all performing. The service was great and provided by a staff that did not lack personality.
We had a marvelous evening of food, drink, and costumed performers.

We arranged for the entertainers to come to our table and congratulate Brad. They sang and danced, and even gave Brad a sash with the colors of the Columbia flag. I believe the text on the sash said “Welcome to Earth” or something like that…lol!!!

Overall, it was a wonderful way to celebrate Brad’s retirement and we all had a great time at the Andres Restaurant.

  • To the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá

    6 April 2023, Colombia ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Today the four us hired a taxi and visited the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, an underground church built inside a salt mine and made entirely of salt. The cathedral is located about 600 feet underground in a former salt mine in Zipaquirá, just outside Bogotá.

It was an amazing experience to see the Roman Catholic icons carved out of salt and the enormous floor-to-ceiling cross illuminated with purple lights.

The Salt Cathedral has a fascinating history. Initially, miners prayed in a small sanctuary built inside the caverns where they would pray to the Virgin of the Rosary of Guasá, the patron saint of miners, to protect them from toxic gases, explosions and other accidents. That first sanctuary was built in the 1930s. After extracting salt, the miners left in their wake a vast network of grottoes, pits and passageways. Retired mining engineer Jorge Castelblanco says most exhausted mines are simply abandoned and sealed up. But Zipaquirá's miners and church officials persuaded the Colombian government to convert the empty spaces into a church in 1953.

It was an unforgettable experience to visit this architectural wonder and learn about its history.

  • Last Day in Bogota!

    7 April 2023, Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today was our last day in Bogota and it was Good Friday. We were lucky enough to witness a procession leaving the Primatial Cathedral of Bogotá on Plaza de Bolívar. We followed the military precession that entered the cathedral to lift and take out the important religious artifacts for their route through the square and town. It was a beautiful sight to see the faithful walking together in prayer and reflection.

Kristy and Brad had the chance to take pictures with some lamas. They were so cute and friendly! It was a great way to end our trip. We spent the rest of our time waking around old town before leaving for the airport.

Overall, our time in Bogota has been unforgettable. We've made so many memories and experienced so much of the local culture. I'm sad to leave but grateful for the time we've had here.

    Until next time Bogota!!!

  • Fabulous Steak Dinner

    8 April 2023, Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Tonight, the four of us had an amazing dinner at Parrilla La Brigada in Buenos Aires. The restaurant is located in the heart of San Telmo and was founded in 1992 by Hugo Echevarrieta. It's known for its delicious Argentine cuisine and has been visited by people from all over the world, including celebrities and even presidents.

The atmosphere was lively and festive, with a decor that truly captures the essence of Buenos Aires. We started with some salad and grilled provolone cheese, followed by a juicy steak cooked to perfection. Craig and I had the bone in rib-eye, grilled medium rare, and was delicious. So tender you could eat it with a spoon! Brad and Kristy had the fillet mignon, and it was grilled medium. The wine selection was impressive and we enjoyed a bottle of Malbec from Mendoza.

We had no room for dessert! The service was impeccable and we felt truly welcomed. It was a night to remember.

  • Buenos Aires Walking Tour

    9 April 2023, Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today we had the pleasure of taking a "Heart of the City and History" walking tour with Rodrigo in Buenos Aires. Rodrigo was an exceptional guide, with a wealth of knowledge about both local and national history. His expertise in the architecture of Buenos Aires was evident as he pointed out the intricate details and styles of the buildings we passed.

One of the most interesting buildings we saw was the Palacio Barolo. This historic building was designed by Italian architect Mario Palanti and was inspired by Dante Alighieri's work The Divine Comedy. The building is divided into three sections representing Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. The basement and ground floor represent Hell, floors 1-14 are Purgatory, and floors 15-22 represent Heaven. It was fascinating to see how Dante's work was incorporated into the building's design.

The tour was comprehensive, covering art, politics (including present-day politics and the legacy of Eva Perón), local communities, gastronomy, and even hidden streets that we would have never discovered on our own. Rodrigo's passion for his city was contagious and we were completely captivated by his stories and insights.

Overall, it was an incredible experience and we feel so grateful to have had Rodrigo as our guide. His expertise in local and national history, architecture, art, politics, communities, gastronomy, and hidden streets truly made this tour unforgettable.

  • An Evening of Tango

    10 April 2023, Argentina ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Tonight we had an unforgettable evening at Querandi, one of the most traditional places in Buenos Aires. We were transported back in time to the golden years of Tango and enjoyed an authentic Tango show with professional dancers and musicians in a beautiful ambiance.

Some interesting facts: Querandi has been awarded by the Historical Museum of the City with the title of “Testimonio Vivo de la Memoria Ciudadana” for its restoration in 1992 after remaining abandoned for more than 12 years. It was a magical experience to witness the history of Tango unfold before our eyes through music, singing, and dancing. The 14 artists on stage and their multiple costume changes took us on a journey from the Arrabal to Modernism.

The dinner was exquisite and we had a wide variety of options to choose from. The performances also had great singers and musicians that accompanied the Tango dancers - a magical evening.

  • Iguazu Falls Argentina

    14 April 2023, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today we checked out of our hotel and made our way to visit the Iguazu Falls on the Argentina side. We started our journey by walking the “Lower Falls.”From there, we took a train and walked over several metal grate foot bridges to “Devils Mouth.” Along the way, we spotted a giant catfish, circling raptors, and interesting birds. The cool mist at the Devils Mouth was refreshing as the afternoon’s sun was hot.

From there, as we walked along the trails, we were surrounded by lush subtropical rainforest that is home to over 2,000 species of vascular plants and a diverse array of wildlife.

The Iguazu Falls are truly a sight to behold. Some things we leaned from online research: The semicircular waterfall is some 80 meters high and 2,700 meters in diameter, making it one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. It's interesting to note that two-thirds of the falls are on the Argentina side.

The falls have a rich history and many interesting facts. For example, they were formed as a result of a volcanic eruption and consist of about 275 waterfalls. The surrounding national park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 due to its exceptional universal value.

Overall, our visit to the Iguazu Falls on the Argentina side was an unforgettable experience filled with breathtaking natural beauty, fascinating history and interesting facts.

Coatis aren’t just cute furry mammals with raccoon tails. They are pretty aggressive when it comes to food. As Craig found out while trying to eat on of our waffle cookies from Amsterdam. The Coati snuck up on on Craig while he was sitting and took his little bag of waffle cookies. As you can see from the picture the waffles did not go to waste!

While we enjoyed our visit to the Brazil side yesterday with newer facilities, we pretty much agreed the Argentina side and the many trails provided many spectacular views.

We took a drive around the lake and discovered some of the beaches and look out points. The bird watching was quite fantastic!

  • Colonia Suiza

    15 April 2023, Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

This afternoon, we decided to visit Colonia Suiza today, a quaint village about 25 kilometers from Bariloche. It was founded by Swiss immigrants in the late 19th century and still preserves its European heritage. We were charmed by the wooden houses, the artisanal shops, and the scenic views of the mountains and the lake.

We spent the afternoon walking around the village and admiring the nature. We saw some interesting little shops; handicrafts, organic jams, jewelry, and various food items. Craig and Brad enjoyed some ice cream. We then took a short walk to one of them many lakes in the region. Pristine waters, surrounded by trees and mountains.

We had a wonderful time at Colonia Suiza and felt like we traveled back in time to a simpler era. It was a nice contrast to the busy city of Bariloche and a great way to experience a different side of Patagonia.

  • Battle of the Breweries

    15 April 2023, Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We first visited one of the breweries in Colonia Suiza. A short walk from the center of town - Berlina Patagonia Brewery, which is a family-owned business that produces craft beers with natural ingredients.

We also got to enjoy some of their beers, such as the pale ale, the stout, and the red ale. They were all very flavorful and refreshing and paired greatly with the french fries we ordered.

We enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the brewery, which has a wooden deck. Kristy the dog whisperer quickly made friends with Olympia, a rescued grey hound and some of the other neighborhood dogs who were curious about some of the visitors or our french fries.

Soon after we hopped in the car and drove to the Patagonia Brewery, which is located near Colonia Suiza. This brewery is part of a famous Argentinian beer brand that produces high-quality craft beers with natural ingredients and pure water from the Andes. We were impressed by the modern and eco-friendly facilities, which use solar panels and recycle water and waste according to internet research.

We enjoyed some of their beers; such as the Bohemian Pilsener, and the Amber Lager. They were all very smooth and refreshing. As a side note, it was unanimous that we liked the beers from the Berlina Patagonia over these, but the views of the lake and the vibe at Patagonia Brewery were amazing.

We enjoyed the stunning views of the lake and the mountains from the brewery’s terrace, where we hung out some. We also learnt from one of the staff members, due to the following day’s election, alcohol would not be sold after 9pm and the following entire day nationally - good to know!

  • Cerro Campanario View Point

    16 April 2023, Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Today we planned on taking a boat ride but learnt there was only one boat going out this afternoon. So we shifted gears and decided to take the chair lift to the top of Cerro Campanario, one of the most scenic viewpoints in Bariloche. The ride was nice and smooth, as we soared above the trees and enjoyed the panoramic views of the lake and the mountains. The weather was perfect, sunny and clear, and we could see for miles. We felt like we were on top of the world.

When we reached the summit, we were greeted by a cozy café and a souvenir shop. The atmosphere was peaceful and serene, and we felt so grateful to be there.

We took many photos and videos of the stunning landscape, and admired the beauty of nature.

We spent about an hour at the top, and then hiked back down. We agreed to give our unused tickets to hikers on their way up as we proceeded down the path that was quite steep at times.

  • Our Boat Outing: Parque National Park

    17 April 2023, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

So after getting to the marina, purchasing tickets and park entrance fees, our boat is turning around due to mechanical issues. I guess better to know now than later in the evening further away.

We’ll get a refund and find a hike or something to do in our last day here.

Update: We are getting on a different boat! After a quick lunch we boarded a very crowded boat. Anyway, the views are stunning but it’s quite cold outside on the boat.

Some information I found about the port we boarded our boat - Puerto Pañuelo is a passenger port located in Llao Llao peninsula, on Nahuel Huapi Lake. It is located 25 km west of the city of Bariloche, Argentina. The original port was built in 1965 by The National Park Administration, as part of the tourist infrastructure with which Nahuel Huapi National Park was endowed.

We had a great tour guide. At the Parque National park, our guide gave us a private tour in English. We learnt about the different volcanic rocks on the beach produced by earthquakes and eruptions.

Also, we learnt about the humming birds and a tiny marsupial (20cm in size) that inhabits the forest as they eat the fruit of the red flowers which are parasites that grow on these trees.

The Forrest on this peninsula are quite special as it’s the only place on the world where a type of bush grows to the size of a tree. This bush is the Luma Apiculata. When you place your hand on the trunk it is cold since you can feel the coldness of its sap due to the thinness of its bark. Luma apiculata

There is a native tree that fights off parasites by closing the area on “infestation” with a bowl shaped wound where these mushroom like spouts are eaten by a certain marsupial (like a large rat). Our guide said this mushroom are quite sweet. We saw these “bowls” up in the branches of this tree.

We also learnt about the earthquakes and volcanoes that have contributed to the different small rocks found on the beach. What a great tour and tour guide!!!

We didn’t have a tour guide with us this time around but had a great time exploring.

At every turn there was a magnificent view. We took many photos and enjoyed the fresh air and the amazing island views.
