Nahuel Huapi National Park

We just came back from an amazing two-day road trip to Nahuel Huapi National Park, the oldest and second-largest national park in Argentina. It was a beautiful and adventurous experience.

We started our trip from Bariloche and drove along Route 40, a legendary road that crosses the Andes and connects many natural and cultural attractions. We visited 10 lakes in total during our trip, each one with its own charm and beauty. Some of them were Nahuel Huapi, Moreno, Escondido, Correntoso, Espejo, Traful, Villarino, Falkner, Machonico and Lácar. We enjoyed the scenery and taking photos.

Research from the internet: We also saw a lot of bird life, especially the white-throated hawk, a rare and majestic raptor that lives in this region. We saw a lot of lichens that grow in the park, and hung from branches.

We spent our first night in San Martín de los Andes, another town on the shore of Lake Lácar. It was a picturesque and charming place with a lot of history and culture. The town was founded in 1898 by settlers from Chile who crossed the Andes looking for land. It has a population of about 24,000 people and it is known for its skiing resort on Cerro Chapelco. We had fun exploring the town's shops, restaurants and bars. We had too much fun and drank too much wine and cocktails, but we had a lovely dinner. The weather was cold and windy that day, but we didn't mind.

The second day we drove along Route 63, another scenic road that goes along Lake Nahuel Huapi. The highlight of our trip was hiking to a waterfall in the park. We followed a trail that took us through lush forests, rocky slopes and crystal-clear streams. The forest had many different types of trees with lichen swaying in the breeze. It was like something out of the pages of a fairytale. Some of the small wooden foot bridges were a challenge to cross. The waterfall was spectacular, with water cascading down from a high cliff into a pool below. It was beautiful, an hidden oasis as described by Kristy.

We stopped at Villa La Angostura, another town on the shore of the lake. It was a quieter and more relaxed place than San Martín de los Andes. The town was founded in 1932 by pioneers who wanted to create a tourist destination in harmony with nature. It has a population of about 12,000 people and it is known for its skiing resort on Cerro Bayo. We stayed overnight in a cozy cabin near the lake and enjoyed a fire in our cabin. The weather was warm and sunny that day, which made us happy.

One of the most amazing things we saw during our trip was the spectacular colors of the trees in autumn. The park was like a painting with shades of yellow, orange, red and green. And of course, the lakes did not disappoint. The grandness, serene colors of the water, and the “sheets of glass” on the second and sunny day was simply beautiful. On the Way to the Airport

We enjoyed exploring Bariloche and the Nahuel Huapi National Park. After we left our cabin this morning, and as we approached the airport, we were greeted with amazing landscapes with roaming clouds that hugged the mountains and trees. Mendoza: First Day

Today was our first day in Mendoza, Argentina. After settling in our Airbnb, we started our day by visiting Plaza Independencia, the main square of the city. It was a sunny and warm day, and we enjoyed walking around the spacious park, admiring the fountain and the statues.

The start of our exploration made us hungry, so we had a nice lunch sitting outdoors in the pedestrian zone. We enjoyed a nice pizza and a chicken salad. After lunch we stopped by a travel agency to book a wine tour. We were successful and our tour will be Saturday.

From there, we walked to Plaza España, another charming square that features Spanish tiles, a mosaic fountain and a monument to the Spanish immigrants. We learned that Mendoza has a strong cultural and historical connection to Spain, as it was founded by Pedro del Castillo in 1561.

We enjoyed seeing the wonderful architecture in Mendoza. Architectural styles include; Colonial, Neoclassical, Art Deco, Modernist, and Contemporary.

We had a great first day in Mendoza, and we can't wait to see more of this amazing city tomorrow. Czytaj więcej

Bike Ride

Today we had an amazing bike ride through the Parque General San Martin, one of the largest and most beautiful parks in Mendoza. We rented bikes from a nearby shop and entered the park through the impressive Portones del Parque San Martin, a monumental gate that welcomes visitors to this green oasis[.

We rode along the Calle Los Platanos, a shady avenue lined with plane trees that change colors with the seasons. We saw people jogging, walking their dogs, having picnics and enjoying the fresh air. The park is very well maintained and has many attractions, such as a zoo, a science museum, a lake, a rose garden and several fountains.

One of the highlights of our ride was climbing up the Cerro de la Gloria, a hill that offers stunning views of the city and the mountains. On top of the hill, there is a majestic monument dedicated to General San Martin, the hero of Argentine independence who led his army across the Andes to liberate Chile and Peru[. The monument depicts scenes from his epic campaign and has bronze statues of soldiers and horses. It was very impressive and inspiring to see, even with the fast moving traffic.

We learned some interesting facts from the internet about the park :The park was designed by Carlos Thays, a famous French landscape architect who also created many parks in Buenos Aires[. The park covers 865 acres and was inaugurated in 1896. He explained that the park is named after General San Martin because he was born in Mendoza and his house is now a museum that can be visited inside the park.

After admiring the views from the hill, we descended back to the main road and continued our ride around the park. We stopped by the Fuente de los Continentes, a beautiful fountain that represents the five continents with allegorical figures. We also visited the lake, where we saw ducks, swans and rowboats.

We had a wonderful time exploring the Parque General San Martin by bike. It was a great way to experience nature, culture and history in one place.

Spectacular Mountain Pass

Today the four of us boarded a bus to Santiago via a pass through the Andes - the Paso Internacional Los Libertadores, also called Cristo Redentor. The road passed very close to Aconcagua, the highest peak in the western hemisphere. The border is actually in the middle of a 3,080 meter long tunnel.

The views along the way were breathtaking. We saw majestic peaks, green valleys, and sparkling rivers. Atop the pass we saw the Cristo Redentor statue, a symbol of peace between Chile and Argentina. It sits at 3,832 meters (12,572 ft) at the pass of La Cumbre, the old road that links the two countries. The statue is four tons and was placed there in 1904. There were also some interesting cemeteries near the peak on both the Argentina and Chile sides.

As an interesting side note, after cross the pass, we came into Santiago on the Autopista Los Libertadores, for which Craig led the financing for the lenders when he was at Debevoise.

This is definitely one of the most spectacular roads I have seen! The mountains seem to thrust through the clouds as they both race towards the sky. The diversity of rock formations and patterns from centuries of erosion is just incredible. I definitely want to return and explore this area! Czytaj więcej

Today was a captivating day of exploration as we immersed ourselves in the rich history and enchanting architecture of Santiago, Chile. The four of us signed up for a walking tour to explore the city's vibrant energy and interesting history:

Plaza de Armas: Our adventure commenced at the historic Plaza de Armas, the beating heart of Santiago. Stepping onto this bustling square, we were greeted by the grandeur of the Metropolitan Cathedral and the stunning façade of the Correo Central. The square's energetic atmosphere, adorned with fountains, palm trees, and vibrant flowers, provided the perfect introduction to Santiago's cultural heritage.

La Moneda: Just a stone's throw away from Plaza de Armas lies the majestic Palacio de La Moneda, the seat of the Chilean government. This neoclassical masterpiece stood as a symbol of political power and resilience. We marveled at the architectural grandeur and learned about its historic significance, including the tumultuous events that unfolded during the military coup of 1973.

Plaza de la Constitución: Continuing our exploration, we strolled along the bustling streets of Santiago to reach the Plaza de la Constitución. This expansive square is surrounded by significant landmarks, including the imposing Palacio de los Tribunales and the elegant Palacio de Justicia. The square's lively atmosphere, adorned with colorful street performers and bustling cafes, offered a glimpse into the city's vibrant culture.

Barrio Paris - Londres: Our next destination took us to the charming neighborhood of Barrio Paris - Londres, a true architectural gem. Walking through its narrow streets, we were transported to another era, with European-inspired architecture and quaint cobblestone alleys. Each building seemed to whisper stories of bygone times.

Iglesia San Agustín: One of the hidden gems we discovered was the stunning Iglesia San Agustín, a magnificent church nestled within the heart of Santiago. The baroque architecture, adorned with intricate details and towering spires, left us in awe. Stepping inside, we were greeted by the serenity and tranquility of the sacred space, where we took a moment for quiet reflection.

Santa Lucía Hill: We then ascended the iconic Santa Lucía Hill, a verdant oasis in the heart of the city. The winding pathways and lush gardens led us to breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the cityscape of Santiago. We marveled at the contrast between the modern skyline and the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains.

Lastarria: Our day concluded with a visit to the vibrant neighborhood of Lastarria, where art, culture, and gastronomy converge. Today was a day of soaring heights and breathtaking vistas as we embarked on an unforgettable journey aboard the Santiago Cable Car. Today, the four of us embarked on a cool journey from Santiago to the picturesque seaside town of Valparaíso. Savoring the delectable pastries and traditional Brazilian cuisine, we couldn't help but imagine the conversations and gatherings that had taken place within these walls, where intellectuals, artists, and politicians would come together to share ideas and indulge in the cafe's delights.

Continuing our journey, we found ourselves standing before the magnificent Imperial Palace, also known as Paço Imperial. This historical gem served as the residence for the Portuguese royal family during their time in Brazil.

As we ventured into Rio's bustling Centro area, the heartbeat of the city pulsed all around me. The eclectic mix of architectural styles showcased the rich tapestry of Rio's history, from colonial buildings to towering modern skyscrapers. Immersed in the vibrant street life, we were captivated by the energy and liveliness of the markets and shops that lined the bustling streets.

Next, we arrived at the majestic Tiradentes Palace, named in honor of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, a key figure in Brazil's struggle for independence. The palace's neoclassical design exuded an air of power and prestige, befitting its role as the seat of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro. It was humbling to stand in a place that held such historical significance and to contemplate the immense changes that have occurred within these walls over the years.

One of the highlights of our tour was the awe-inspiring Municipal Theatre of Rio, also known as Theatro Municipal. Its architectural resemblance to the Paris Opera House transported us into a world of grandeur and artistic excellence. As we marveled at the intricacy of the marble work, the golden accents, and the mesmerizing stained glass ceiling, one couldn't help but imagine the captivating performances that have graced its stage.

The grand finale of our walking tour brought us to the iconic Escadaria Selarón, also known as the Selarón Steps. Climbing these vividly colored steps adorned with a mesmerizing mosaic of tiles from around the world was a truly magical experience. After our time exploring a few countries in South America - Our time spent in Trancoso, Brazil, nestled along the stunning Bahia coastline, has been nothing short of magical. Our beach home became our sanctuary, a place where we reconnected with the soul of this enchanting region and experienced the vibrant energy of the Quadrado. We were excited to show Brad and Christy our home and to have some relaxing beach time!

Upon arriving at our beach home, we were greeted by the gentle breeze and the rhythmic sounds of exotic birds singing in the rain forest. The beauty of Trancoso instantly enveloped us, with its pristine beaches and lush greenery, creating a tranquil backdrop for our stay.

The days unfolded at a leisurely pace, with mornings spent strolling along the sandy beaches, feeling the soft grains beneath our toes and dipping into the refreshing waters of the ocean. The Bahia sun bathed us in its warm embrace, casting a golden glow upon our sun-kissed skin.

In the evenings, we ventured into the heart of Trancoso, the Quadrado. This historic square, lined with vibrant and colorful houses, emanated an irresistible charm. The Quadrado became our meeting point, a place where locals and visitors alike gathered to share stories, enjoy local delicacies, and soak in the lively atmosphere.

As we meandered through the Quadrado, we discovered quaint boutiques and artisanal shops, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Bahia.

The evenings in Trancoso were filled with a symphony of flavors. We indulged in the region's culinary delights, savoring Bahian dishes that delighted our taste buds with their bold spices and fresh ingredients. Whether it was the traditional acarajé, the succulent moqueca, or the refreshing caipirinhas, each bite and sip revealed a story of Bahia's culinary heritage.

Craig and I have been traveling with Brad and Kristy for the past month. We started in Columbia, and ventured to Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. We shared many adventures, hikes, road trips, city exploring, art and cultural pursuits, and culinary adventures! It was hard saying goodbye since we spent every day with them during the last seven weeks. Hope we can organize another great adventure!!!

We had such a great time in Trancoso with Anne, Meg, and Allan. Each day was filled with great conversations and much laughter!

From a food perspective: We indulged in the region's culinary delights, savoring Bahian dishes such as the traditional acarajé, the succulent moqueca, or the refreshing caipirinhas. There were plenty of caipirinhas that we enjoyed from Val’s Drink Cart or restaurants!

🌿🐊 Unforgettable Encounter at Ecocentro Danaus in Costa Rica! 🌺

Craig and I are still amazed after today’s visit to Ecocentro Danaus! This nature reserve is an absolute gem, and we had a jaw-dropping experience that we just have to share with you all:

🌳 Sloths: We were lucky enough to spot these adorable creatures leisurely hanging from the trees. Did you know that sloths sleep for up to 20 hours a day? Talk about the ultimate chill!

🐸 Colorful and Poisonous Frogs: Our eyes were treated to a spectacular display of vibrant hues as we encountered the fascinating and poisonous frogs of the reserve. Remember, their dazzling colors serve as a warning to predators!

🐊 The Mighty Cayman: Hold onto your hats, folks! We came face to face with a magnificent Cayman during our visit. This alligator-like reptile took our breath away as it stealthily emerged from the water. A true snapshot of nature's power!

🦜 Toucans: These majestic birds graced us with their presence, flaunting their distinctive beaks and vibrant plumage. Fun fact: Toucans use their beaks for more than just looks—they also help with regulating body temperature!

🦎 The Basilisk Lizard (a.k.a. The Jesus Lizard): We witnessed the legendary Basilisk Lizard hanging out but this incredible reptile has the ability to scamper across water! Hence the nickname - Nature truly has its enchanting surprises!

🦋 Butterflies: Ecocentro Danaus is a haven for butterflies of all shapes, sizes, and colors. We felt like we were walking through a magical butterfly garden. Did you know that butterflies taste with their feet? Nature's little secret! There were a few butterflies that perched on my hands and arms.

Ecocentro Danaus is an extraordinary place that not only captivates with its diverse wildlife but also stands as a stronghold for conservation. They actively promote sustainable practices, protect endangered species, and provide valuable knowledge about Costa Rica's rich ecosystem. 🌿🌎✨ Czytaj więcej

🌿🦜 Exploring the Enchanting Cloud Forest of Costa Rica! 🌿🦜

Hey everyone! Just had the most amazing adventure exploring the breathtaking Cloud Forest in Costa Rica! 🌳🌺 As soon as we arrived, Craig mentioned how much he wanted to spot the legendary Resplendent Quetzal. And guess what? Our wish was granted right off the bat, in the most incredible way possible!

Our guide, a true nature enthusiast, led us on an unforgettable journey through the lush forest. Believe it or not, just three minutes into our walk, the Resplendent Quetzal made its grand appearance! I can't even put into words how mind-blowing it was to witness this majestic bird in all its vibrant green glory. We were in awe of its unique dwelling habits and how it adapted to the forest floor. Nature truly knows how to surprise us!

The forest itself was like stepping into a different world. Towering trees surrounded us, their branches reaching high into the sky, creating a dense canopy that made us feel like explorers on a secret mission. And those fern trees, with their delicate fronds unfurling like intricate masterpieces, added a touch of elegance to the whole scene.

As we walked along, the symphony of bird chirps filled the air, each one a unique sound that added to the magical atmosphere.
