    Point Turton here we come

    February 4, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Left Adelaide at 10:30 and headed to Point Turton.
Stopped at Minlaton on the way and read about Captain Harry Buttler, a local lad who flew in England in 1026-1018 and then returned to Australian and set up own Aviation company.
Arrived Point Turton and set up by 1:30pm. A fairly overcast day but no wind so good for travelling.
Got a great site at the caravan park, up on the top deck with lovely water views. First time we can open our front window shade and see the water.
Headed to Parsons Beach to catch up with a mate of Rob's for a chat and he drove us around the beaches near his holiday house. We will explore them some more over the next week.
Back to Point Turton for a walk down the jetty and we run into Miriam & Chris from Australian Destinations Unknown (ADU a YouTube channel we follow). Toasty Turkish rolls for dinner and another walk down the jetty to finish the day. Saw the resident rays swimming around.

    Flaherty's Beach

    February 5, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

    Woke up to amazing weather.
Opened our bed window to see the sea for the first time in our van.
Beautiful morning so went for a walk down the jetty and breakwater.
Packed the car and headed to Flaherty's Beach for the day.
Did a 5km walk back towards Point Turton this morning then had lunch on the beach.
After lunch inflated the paddle board and headed out for a play.
    Absolutely flat calm, warm waters.
Lots of fun on the board and Rob did some snorkeling.
Back to the car for a drink and then we headed towards Hardwick Bay for another long walk, another 6km round trip.
For a perfect beach day, not very many other people on the beach to share it with.
Back to the van for dinner and a final walk down the jetty.

    Corny Point Lighthouse &Burners Beach

    February 6, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Headed off today to explore towards the bottom of the foot.
First stop, Corny Point, it's beach wasn't much today as the water was out, so headed to the lighthouse.
That was cool, but the bay just next to the lighthouse "Horseshoe Bay" was spectacular. Hard to navigate down to the beach but once there just beautiful.
Next onto Berry Bay for our first long beach walk for the day. Just over 4km Berry Bay to Gravel Bay and return. Lovely hard flat sand, no shells. On our return we saw a pod of about 6-7 dolphins riding the waves!
Back through Corny Point and onto Burners Beach for the afternoon.
Set up our beach shelter and went for a swim.
Later our second beach walk about 3km.
Beautiful weather, sunny, no cloud cover, about 29 degrees very low winds.

    Dolphins at Gleesons Landing

    February 7, 2023, Indian Ocean ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

A bit of a south Easterly wind today so we headed back to the bottom of the peninsula. Gleeson's Landing looked like it would be a bit of a protected bay that was our pick.
It was another nice big bay that offered us a 5km return walk.
On the outward walk we had a pod of 4-5 dolphins swim about 50m off the shore for about 10 minutes. We thought that was great, but on the return there was about 9-10 dolphins that came in very close to shore, Rob waded out in the water and took some video footage, it was amazing, they were not fussed about Rob at all and one had a calf with her.
They hung around for ages tail slapping and having lots of fun. It was so cool.
Also found a Port Jackson shark egg casing on the beach.
After lunch on the beach we headed back to Berry Bay (but south end today) for a snorkel in the rock pools. Just a beautiful location and no other people around, so secluded and pretty.

    Port Victoria for lunch

    February 8, 2023 in Australia

A bit of a lazy day today, headed towards Port Victoria to meet Mum and Dad for lunch.
Stopped at wauraltee Beach for a look and quick walk, as we had heard so much about the beach. Many people camp on the beach. There were about 20 vans on the beach today. A very corrugated road to get in and then the last part actually getting onto the beach we wouldn't have been able to get our van down. Several big ditches. But a lovely beach, similar in ways to Perlubie beach.
On towards Port Victoria for lunch and we passed a beautiful pink lake. Said to Rob, we will stop for a pic on the way back, but it was overcast and the lake had lost all its colour when we got back later!!
Lunch was at the Port Victoria hotel with Mum and Dad was lovely sitting outside on the verandah.
A walk down the jetty afterwards before heading back to Point Turton.
Got out our scuba gear to check it all before doing a dive tomorrow only to discover that both sets need servicing before we can use them as they have ceased up over the last 3 years of no use😞. So no diving this trip.
Watched as the fishermen cleaned their fish and fed the resident 5 stingrays and local Pelican at the local jetty late this afternoon.

Innes National Park - Yorke Peninsula

    February 9, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Started off early and headed to Marion Bay. Walked to the lookout and then walked the jetty. Quite alot of sea grass by the jetty.
Then we headed into Innes National Park.
Pondalowie Bay first stop and the two little bays to the left were really pretty. We then headed on further to Dolphin Beach. This was another beautiful bay with a shelter shed where we had our lunch after walking the small bay before going for a snorkel at the far end. Fresh when you first get in but after a couple of minutes was lovely.
Had heard Shell beach was supposed to be the pick of beaches in the Park so this was the next stop.
Another nice beach but brown sand that was very hot, also NO shells!
Lots of people there though but we thought Dolphin Beach was better.
Last beach was Browns beach that looked like a lovely beach for a long walk but we'd ran out of time so hopefully save it for another day.
Back to the van for dinner before heading to Wauraltee Beach to watch a magical Sunset. No wind or clouds. Just beautiful.

    Stansbury- Aust Fur Seals

    February 10, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Spent the morning editing photos while it was a fully overcast, cool and windy.
Headed to Minlaton for lunch at "Ye Olde Cafe". Lovely service and good food.
Drove onto to Stansbury where the sun came out and the wind wasn't as strong on that side of the peninsula. We walked along the foreshore towards the jetty.
Rob spotted a seal in the boat ramp so we walked out the breakwater and spent about an hour watching 4 Australia Fur Seals play on the rocks. Walked out the Stansbury jetty and talked to a few locals who say there are up to 8 seals that hang around the area.
Got a tip that Sultana Point was a nice beach for a walk so drove just passed Edithburgh to that beach. Nice until you rounded the point and then the wind was blowing the sand too strong.

    Flarhertys Beach again!

    February 11, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

    Happy birthday to Laura today.

After another quiet morning of playing around the van while the weather fined up we edited some more photos from passed trips and did a little caravan maintenance.
Once the sun came out we had an early lunch and then a short drive to the end of Point Turton to commence our long walk along flarhertys Beach. Just over two hours today walking to the main vehicle entrance and back again. Ending in a small section of "Walk the Yorke".
Back to the van where Rob played a little guitar before dinner.
Another walk on the jetty after dinner and we saw one of the resident stingrays and three pelicans, ending a very enjoyable day.

Time to get the setup weighed!

    February 12, 2023 in Australia

Packed up and left the beautiful Point Turton Caravan Park and headed to Ardrossan where we were meeting "Onsite Weighbridge" who was going to weigh our car and van to ensure we were all ok.
Met them at the foreshore and they were a lovely couple who also owned a Snowy caravan from Adelaide.
Very professional setup and great with their explanation of what all the weights meant.
Great news was we were under in all areas. And he gave us a few tips which was great.
Left there knowing what we can and can't do in the future.
Had lunch at the Ardrossan bakery, very nice and then a walk down the jetty. Rob remembers going to Ardrossan many years ago when there was a nice beach there. But not now, big red crumbling cliffs that make the water red and no beach. Still a nice friendly town. Back to Gawler the store the van at Laura's place. Then unpack it and bring home all our clothes and the little bit of leftover food.
Great week away. The Yorke Peninsula had some truely hidden gems of some places that we need to explore more. We will be back!
