My flight from Vienna and Grahams from Dubai arrived within 10 minutes of each other.
We amazingly met up with one another in one of the Underground corridors between Heathrow airport terminals. After successfully navigating the London train systems we dropped our bags at our apartment and went out to look for a place to eat. I think if we sat down for too long, we may have fallen asleep. Stonehenge

Early morning for us today. 2.45am wakeup so that we could get on the tour bus to Stonehenge. Today was the Autumn solstice and so there was a group of druids and pagans celebrating at sunrise. Quite an atmosphere!もっと詳しく

Watching Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back, at the Royal Albert Hall.

Reykavik exploring

We got into Reykavik at about 5 pm, using the shuttle from the airport, and found our accommodation. We headed out to get our bearings towards Hallsgrimskirkja. As we walked towards this church the sun was going down, giving us a lovely view of the harbour in Reykavik (we walked down towards the Sun Voyager). After gathering some supplies for breakfast we stopped for dinner at a Hamburger joint - Le Kock (highly recommended) before heading back towards Harpa concert hall to watch it's light show.もっと詳しく

On the road in Iceland

We were picked up this morning by Larus who runs RV Rentals. After instructions and paperwork, we were sent on with directions for a secret spot .... which we never found and began our Iceland adventure. We stopped for lunch at Gaukshofthi and had some lovely views over towards Hekla. Our first destination is Landmanalaugar for which we have high expectations.もっと詳しく

Hjalparfoss and Frostasdavyn Lake

Our first Icelandic waterfall. I think this one is a warm-up! Then we continue travelling towards Landsmannalaugar. Just before dusk, we come across some professional photographers who waiting for a colleague who has gone off to find his lost drone. Graham gets talking to one of them who suggested that we drone the around the nearby craters that look fairly non-descript from the road. From above they are rather spectacular. We were also able to get a view of nearby lakes. We still had enough light to see Frostasdavyn Lake - a beautiful and peaceful sight, before we reach the Landsmannalaugar campsite.もっと詳しく

Hiking in Landmannalaugar

Words cannot describe the beauty of this place. I would love to spend more time here.

We began on the Laugahraun trail, turning to walk along the west of Brennisteinsalda. From here we began an ascent up the northern face of Brennisteinsalda before deciding to turn towards Blahnukkur. A small detour up a valley on the eastern face of Blahnukkur provided a challenging climb in windy conditions but with lovely views. The final part of the walk took us along the valley south of Blahnukkur and back to our campsite.もっと詳しく

The trip from Landmannalaugar was an adventure. Numerous water crossings and beautiful scenery but also corrugated, potholed gravel roads to contend with.

Northern lights at Vik

After a long day, we found that the Aurora Borealis forecast was for high probability in our area. It was pretty spectacular.

We travelled west from Vik today visiting some renowned sights that were also well-trafficked by the tourist buses. After our relatively solitary trip so far, having so many people around was a bit of a shock to the system. We stayed overnight in the parking area of Seljalandsfoss allowing us to capture this waterfall at sunset.もっと詳しく

Today we decided to travel a little back on the path we have already taken to see a waterfall that looked to be very photogenic. I informed Graham that the trip should be around 50km - not too far ..... but I made a rooky mistake. I am using 2 maps to navigate this trip, along with technology and with all this information our 50km route turned into about 200km one way. Using the highway name as the number of kilometres is not a good plan. Add to this that some recent hydroelectric installation had changed road paths made this waterfall difficult to find. Alas, all this effort was for little - not so impressive waterfall/rapids. The route back was more simple to follow and we got to see a sheep shelter that became something similar to a council meeting place back in the 1700s. Amazingly there is no protection for this cave and it is not locked or protected in any way and yet remains pristine. Our night was spent at Kirkjubaejarklaustur.もっと詳しく

Our plan today was a 3-hour trek on F roads (4WD tracks including river crossings) to visit Mt Laki and the Lakagigar eruption site. The first stop on the route was Fagrifoss. It is a majestic waterfall and we had it all to ourselves!もっと詳しく

We had a little difficulty finding the right track to reach Mt Laki, but find it we did and we had lovely clear skies to walk the interpretive trail and enjoy the views.

Lakagigar (named after Mt Laki) is a collection of fissures and craters formed during the 1783/84 eruptions, one of the largest in history. Most of the pictures below are of the Tjarnargigur crater.

Fladrargljufur

Despite a long day of 4WDing we stopped just before reaching the Kirkjubaejarklaustur campground to check out the Fladrargljufur canyon. This was a spectacular sight and we will probably head back tomorrow at dawn so that Graham can do some droning.もっと詳しく
