  • Diamond Beach

    1 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Some of the icebergs from Jokulsarlon lagoon wash up onto the beach with the tide once reaching the sea. These beautiful glittering formations contrast beautifully against the black beach.

  • Jokulsarlon

    1 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Jokulsarlon is a beautiful glacier lake that has formed as the Breidamerkurjokull glacier has retreated. Icebergs of all shapes float on the lake and float out toward the sea. Only 10% of the iceberg can be seen above the water - these things are immense and the lagoon must be very deep.Baca lagi

  • Jokulsarlon - Take 2

    1 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

We stuck around at Jokulsarlon for the rest of the afternoon waiting for sunset. Boy are we glad we did! The tide came in around this time changing the lagoon dramatically. What was a gentle flow out to sea became a chaotic whirlpool. This seemed to provide good conditions for feeding as evidenced by the birds and seals that congregated. Another amazing day in Iceland finished with something I whipped up earlier!Baca lagi

  • Skaftafell

    2 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

Apart from our walks today to Svartifoss and Skaftafellsjokull it's been a relatively quiet day. As I'm writing this we are both sitting in a cafe at Skaftafell National park enjoying the views of the glacier and snow-capped mountains out panoramic windows. We're looking forward to an exciting day tomorrow!!!Baca lagi

  • Ice Caving

    3 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

We had a relaxing morning at the Skaftafell camping ground as our Caving tour did not begin until 10.30 am. We had a great guide, Taris, who lead us safely walking up the glacier (wearing crampons) to visit a couple of ice caves (iceholes according to Graham).Baca lagi

  • Stokknes & Vestrahorn

    3 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Late afternoon had us heading towards Hofn to visit Vestrahorn (the Batman mountain). We stopped in at the Viking Cafe and had our first real coffee in Iceland and paid $25 to get access to the beach viewpoint. Unfortunately today, we had our first experience with normal Icelandic weather. The clouds, rain and wind set in making driving difficult and obscuring much of the scenery. We were lucky that the cloud receded and the rain stopped for us to be able to get some late afternoon photo's.Baca lagi

  • Hofn

    3 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Hofn was our destination for the night and we decided to splurge on dinner out. After a little research, we decided to go to Otto's. This restaurant was small, cosy and had amazing food and service. Our meals even including broccoli, Emily!!Baca lagi

  • Litlanesfoss & Hengifoss

    4 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

We arrived quite late in this area where we planned to stay the night. We just managed to fit in the walk to Hengifoss before the sun began to set. We managed the equivalent of 91 flights of stairs on the 3 km walk to the viewpoint - a magnificent view at the end.Baca lagi

  • Skutustadagigar & Hofdi

    6 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

The van was rocking quite a bit last night ..... a very windy night became a beautiful, still day today and we had a busy day planned. First stop was the pseudocraters formed by gas explosions when boiling lava flowed over the wetlands at Skutustadagigar. A little further around Lake Myvatyn was Hofdi, with its unusual rock formations. We stopped here and admired the views whilst having breakfast.Baca lagi

  • Hverir and Mt Hverfjall

    6 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Next stop near Lake Myvatn is Hverir a geothermally active area of Iceland. Here we saw bubbling mud pools, fumaroles and evidence of the richness of sulfur in this area (both sight and smell). We walked up Mt Hverfjall where we got to see some lovely views of the surrounding area.Baca lagi

  • Godafoss

    6 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

The last stop on this busy day is the amazing waterfall, Godafoss. We were here early enough to take photos during the day and also during twilight. After dinner and once the sun had gone down we thought we would try and get ourselves a little further west so we drove on to Akureyri.Baca lagi

  • Glaumbaer Farm & Church

    7 Oktober 2019, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Today we are up for a long drive. We decided to change plans and head out to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Our first stop on the route is the Glaumbaer Farm which has traditional turf houses that were built in the mid 18th century and were lived in until 1947. There are also examples of Icelandic houses that took over after the turf house early in the 20th century (although these houses have been moved to Glaumbaer from other sites).Baca lagi
