  • Cape Hillsborough

    May 23–25, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

It was quite overcast and rainy on our drive to Cape Hillsborough with continued inclement weather so we decided to get a powered site at the caravan park. We've got a lovely spot overlooking the beach where the kangaroos come to feed each morning.Read more

We are staying for a couple of nights just North of Townsville at the Mystic Sands Golf and Country Club. Amazing spot to stay at $10/night with showers, toilet, a pool, lawn bowls and of course golf.
We did 18 holes this morning (sharing the course with roos and kerlews)and then had a very nice lunch overlooking barramundi swimming in the dam. Also saw our first blue wing kookaburra.

  • West Point

    Jun 10–11, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

After catching the barge across to Magnetic Island we drove to our campsite to check out where we'll be spending the next week. From there we drove from one end of the island to the other (about 30 min in total) and decided to stop at West Point to watch the sunset. We spent the evening doing some more night photography and stayed the night parked next to the beach. On the way back the next morning we stopped to see the SS Adelaide. It ran aground in Cockle Bay in 1916. Better photos to come.Read more

  • Snorkeling then Dinner

    Jun 12–14, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Yesterday and today we walked to Arthur and Florence Bays to snorkel. Florence was definitely the pick of the two for 🤿. We saw🐢🐢 along with multitudes of 🐠 🐟🐡. In the evening we went to the Arcadia Hotel for dinner where we had to protect our food from thieves who would swoop in and take whole steaks off your plate. Lots of Kerlews are also wandering about the place. Then the midweek highlight of the toad races.Read more

  • Farewell Maggie

    June 17, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Our last day on Magnetic Island started with a relaxing morning. After leaving our campsite (The Forts) for the last time, we drove towards Horseshoe Bay to do the Butterfly Walk - so many butterflies, and they did not seem at all sleepy. Then an early lunch at Scalliwags, a very reasonable pirate-themed cafe that made the best coffee. We then bid farewell to Maggie on yet another perfect day with blue skies and little wind.Read more

  • Big Crystal Creek

    Jun 18–20, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

We camped at Big Crystal Creek while we investigated Paluma National Park. One hundred metres from the campsite is this beautiful clear pond where you can swim amongst the fish and the turtles.

  • Wallaman Falls

    Jun 20–21, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

There are so many waterfalls. This one is special, though, as its main fall has the longest drop in Australia, at 268 metres. We walked down to its base through tall open forest that gradually changed to rainforest. About halfway down a young couple came jogging past us. We got talking to Hadiah and Shania at the base of the falls.
Hadiah jogged back up but Shania chatted with us during our return trip up the path.
At the top, Hadiah offered us a coconut (he climbs trees to retrieve them)—my first fresh coconut. After drinking the coconut milk, Hadiah opened the coconut, cut me a spoon, and showed me how to eat the jelly inside. It was really yummy.

  • Cass-o-wary!!

    Jun 21–22, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We continued our travel northward along the Bruce Highway to Cardwell, visiting the Cardwell State Forest and the Cardwell Spa Pool for a freshen-up after our morning hike to the base of the Wallaman Falls. The unusual blue colour comes from magnesium and calcium carbonates, which act as a flocculant with the clay, resulting in a cloudy suspension that looks blue in sunlight.
We then moved on to Murray Falls to stay overnight and saw our first Cassowary.

  • The Waterfall Way - Qld Version

    Jun 23–25, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We've been based in Millaa Millaa for the last couple of nights while getting our waterfall fix. The weather has been overcast and relatively cool which has been great for hiking and photography.

  • Lake Tinaroo

    Jun 25–26, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The overcast weather has turned to rain :-( ...... I suppose we are in Rainforest country. Lake Tinaroo was beautiful anyway, with the low cloud and drizzle. Many people were still out on the water waterskiing, fishing and kayaking.
On the eastern edge of this lake you can visit a 500 year old Strangler Fig. These trees start by germinating in the branches of another tree and send roots down to the ground, eventually killing the original tree. We've seen many of these whilst out walking but this one was immense.

  • Kuranda

    Jun 26–27, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

We continued to head northward and spent some time in Kuranda visiting the Barron Falls, Kuranda Historical Railway and Australian Butterfly Sanctuary.
The spectacular falls were only able to be glimpsed for short periods because of the low cloud passing through.Read more

  • Chillagoe-Mungana Caves NP

    Jun 27–28, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

After looking at the weather forecast for the next couple of weeks, we decided that we would abandon our plans to continue up the Queensland coast. Instead, we will spend more time investigating outback Queensland. Our first stop was Chilligoe, where we could access the Mungana Caves National Park. Our first stop was to book a caving tour for the next day. We were lucky to get a cancellation spot for the cave tour we favoured (it's school holidays still in Qld). We then headed out to the Balancing Rock for sunset. The next day was our tour around the Trezkinn Cave. Both Graham and I agree that it was the cleanest limestone cave we have ever visited. We were definitely hot after the tour, so we went for a refreshing swim at the Chillagoe Weir.Read more
