    PILGERREISE INS LEBEN
    Tag 3.635
    11/05/2026
    Hövelhof

Rechts ne Hecke, links ne Hecke, hinter uns ne Hecke.

    PILGRIMAGE INTO LIFE
    Day 3,635
    May 11, 2026
    Hövelhof

A hedge to the right, a hedge to the left, a hedge behind us. A road ahead, and houses beyond that. Behind us, the Nordwest-Bahn train pulls out of—and into—the station, which is located three hundred meters to the left. It happens three times in the few minutes we’ve been out walking—before the wind picked up and brought the initial rain, acting, so to speak, as a herald for the rain front passing through overnight.

It was the last of six spots available, though we could have spent the night in the parking lane across the street. But this way, we’re tucked away like a snail in its shell. And looking back at the day, I think that’s exactly what we need.

The morning is full of suspense—wondering if the vehicle inspection will go smoothly and if ATU will accept the return of the brake caliper. In the end, everything turns out to be a breeze, and we meet up with lovely Petra in Seppenrade.

We take a walk together at the sports field. I had actually hoped we could go for a longer stroll with the walker, since she’s helping Hilde along, but the area isn’t very inviting; Hilde is listless, and I feel sluggish.

I’ve fallen out of the rhythm I’d established over the past two weeks far too quickly. It is much harder to find suitable routes while on the road, and I generally can’t let Hilde run off-leash.

Just today, I noticed how difficult it is to find farm tracks where I can actually park. I often have to resort to parking lots, though they aren't exactly ideal.

Petra and her husband returned from Morocco only a few weeks ago and are now on the verge of a trip through the Balkans via Georgia. Exciting. And, given their style of travel, likely very relaxing, too.

Since we are expected in Wieda tomorrow afternoon, we need to cover some ground today. But first, I’m sorting out a special appointment—one we had actually shelved.

But since I have another meeting scheduled with Alex on the 22nd, Sabine has plenty of time to prepare a reading in Lennestadt/Sauerland. We’ll meet on the final day of our tenth year of traveling—either at her café or at the parking spot behind the house.

It would be lovely if we could hold our final reading around a campfire, provided the weather holds. Our first reading took place in a wine tavern high above the Rhine in Switzerland on February 4, 2020. Now we’re bringing the story full circle, and I hope to sell the last three dozen copies of the second volume.

Then my hands will be empty, and the nature of our journey will change accordingly. It has been a wonderful foray into the world of books; we’ve truly enjoyed it. I’ll come out of the venture more or less without a financial loss.
And perhaps, here and there, there are happy people who have spent some lovely hours reading our stories.
